I am happy for anyone to fly anywhere their hearts desire . I just don’t like being told what I shouldn’t do, by those who do it themselves . Not that I fly because I don’t .

Bogs and heaths etc also hold a lot of carbon that is released when the land is drained for forestries.

And "offsetting" is a con

The soil in biodiverse forests HOLDS carbon.

The soil in "forestries" (who run carbon offsetting schemes) RELEASE previously earth bound carbon into the atmosphere

Villifying palm oil is convenient. We cant save the planet without being inconvenienced.

FWIW a LOT of deforestation happens for another crop: trees! The wrong kind of trees. In the wrong kind of soil!

Many products that use the "no palm oil" marketing ploy use oils that are worse for the environment.

It is another example of "just buy less" rather than "buy greenwashed substitutes"

Especially as palm oil is often in non necessity products that we just dont need anyway

Instead if switching to not so green products to buy instead, its best to think about whether we need to buy it at all!

Palm oil:

Deforestation happens for all kinds of crops.

Lower yield crops need more space (and more deforestation) and resources (like water) and time and processing to produce X amount of end product.

Palm oil is higher yield than othet oil crops. So takes less space, time and resurces to produce X amount of end product. Making it "greener" than the oils that are used instead in "no palm oil" products.

Well I have had a real Xmas tree for the last 2 years . What a special treat . I almost cried when my DH brought one home 2 years ago as I had never had a real tree ever. Bought from a local farmer /grower . When finished We stripped the branches and composted them in our own composter and have used the little trunks as plant stakes . Not a bit wasted . I also have a little tree in a pot which I hope will be big enough in a year or two .

Grammaretto, I too support frugality and honestly try to be frugal . It's inordinately difficult for me to be frugal as I prefer not to travel or to drive a car. I am old and my lifestyle is frugal compared with that of many a young person.

The question we must ask is "How may frugal lifestyles be officially sexy?"

Bradfordlass where I live Christmas trees are grown as a crop. I'm in an area of Scotland where much of the land is too poor for growing food and won't sustain stock. The farmers need to make a living and Xmas trees tick the box.

I buy a tree each year. It's grown, harvested and sold within about 10 miles of where I live, so no airmiles and it gives someone an income. Afterwards, it can go to the council composting scheme.

* BradfordLass* round here they farm Xmas trees specially. It's an industry like any other. (At least they haven't got farting cows in the fields whilst they're growing spruce trees. )

My carbon footprint must be miniscule at the moment, although I do have a bit of heating on when I sit down at night.
