Fibre broadband and house phones

Finally, I have now got fibre broadband in my flat. Engineer asked if I wished to keep my landline, and I said I did.
However, I cannot get any sort of line tone on these now. They all work, I tried ringing my landline number from my mobile and it rang, also rang my mobile from landline and that rang.

But no dialling tone. Is this normal?

I had full fibre fitted two years ago.

I did away with my landline, but fretted about doing so.

Now, I wonder why I worried! Haven’t missed it at all.

(Sorry, no help with your query, but just saying, landline soon forgotten).

Our landline is certainly different since it was digitised. The extensions don't relate to each other any more. Sometimes a dialling tone, sometimes not.
We still receive calls o.k.

franbern a relative had this problem. they were told to wait 24 hours but then had to ring them twice and wait another 24 hours each time. It was sorted after that with no further problems. They can’t hold their mobile phone very easily and so it was vital for them to have use of their landline phone.

We had a dialling tone on the landline immediately and so far 🤞 no problems at all. If it doesn’t reappear I’d give the installer or the service provider a call franbern. Our fibre installer also left us a phone number in case of issue within a week of installation. Hope it sorts soon.

I have just checked my digital landline and yes, I have a dialling tone but not until I press the green ‘phone’ button signalling I want to enter phone numbers.

I realise that I didn’t know because I always use the directory stored on the handset, I select the name I want to call and press the green ‘Call/Dial’ button. There is no dialling tone, just a number of beeps as the digits are automatically entered from the directory. I always add a new contact to the directory as soon as I have their number.

If you don't get a dialling tone after pressing the Call/green phone button I would contact your provider but just picking up the handset does not cause a dialling tone to be played.

I hope this helps.

Lollin Thanks for this advice. So, after reading your comment, tried the landline phone(s) again (24 hours after fibre installation) - and Yes, dialling tone is back there. Thanks
Do not use landline very much, but I am Secretary to our block of flats self-managed Resident Association, and all the other flat owners have my landline number and many of the older ones prefer to ring that. Does not cost me any extra to have that, so i will keep it for the time being.

Apparently I couldn't keep my old landline number so I now have a different one. Weird if others have kept theirs? I prefer the old system as it was more reliable.

Since we had fibre we have been able to make and receive calls on our mobiles.
The "ordinary" system of phone calls only worked in parts of the house and the VoIP only near the router.

Now we have a signal everywhere as we have a mesh system even in the kitchen!!!
This feels like a miracle after a 20 year dead-zone!

We have given up our landline - as a bonus this frees up a plug socket!

If you put a mobile phone on speaker mode it’s easier to hold than a landline handset. You can even put it on a table if it’s near enough.

I had mine taken out a while ago now, but I’m sure there was always a dialling tone,
The only time I miss the land line is when I can’t ring my mobile to locate it!

Greciangirl Sat 06-Jun-26 16:17:04

I currently have the same problem.
For some reason my landline has stopped working.
No dialling tone at all.

It’s been perfectly ok for some years since it was changed over and now we can’t use it at all.
Am loath to phone Virgin as it’s a faff trying to speak to someone there.
They prefer everything to be automated.
In other words.Sort yourself out.

I dropped my mobile phone last year ) and broke it) and the only way to get back ( after purchasing a new iPhone ) on apps like banking etc was to get a code sent to my landline Definitely worth keeping another phone number especially if you live alone

Mojack26 Sun 07-Jun-26 00:13:26

My landline has a diallinf tone. I'm with Virgin and in Scotland.

crazyH Sun 07-Jun-26 01:04:44

Yes Gilly8591 is right. To get on to the Banking Apps etc, you need a code and this code is always sent to your landline.
I won’t be giving up my landline.

NotSpaghetti Sun 07-Jun-26 06:39:19

My code came by post. But I've had codes to my mobile for other things.

I have never had a code for anything on my landline.

I don’t use my landline at all, and was prepared to get it off my payment plan, but my daughter has persuaded me to keep paying for it, as I live alone and as she said if I was in trouble and my iPhone had run out of charge or I couldn’t find it or the electricity went off and I couldn’t charge it I d be snookered
So I keep paying for something I don’t use just in case !

Hoibbycat*, my landline phones have a speaker button, always use these when on the phone as my hearing is not very good. So ,makes little difference if I am using landline or my mobile in that regard.

I have NEVER had any security number sent to my landline, always to my mobile/laptop.

'Bluebelle*, surely if you had no electricity then the landline would not work. Prior to fibre, I always kept a spare simple handset for landline, which I could just plug directly in as a phone without any electricity to use in such an emergency. Now I have fibre that little phone is going to Charity Shop.
I do keep a small power pack, always charged up, so in the event of even quite a long outage, I could use that to charge my mobile.

It appears (at the moment) that it is not meaning any extra payment to keep my landline - have handset in living room, bedroom and kitchen - so always nearby. It does have a answerphone, which I always forget to listen to messages and encourage people to use my mobile phone mainly.

BlueBelle Sun 07-Jun-26 09:04:20

Of course, not electricity Franbern I m having a moment

What happens when you have a power cut. Will the phone cut out? I know they do a back up box but is that for the vulnerable?
