This is a big topic and there are all sorts of factors that you need to take into account. I'd start with YouTube for help, if I were you:-

Also Google "remove duplicate photos from Photos on iMac" and "label favourite photos on iMac". It's much more difficult to organise lots of data after you have collected it, rather than to plan its structure from the start! PamelaJ1 is right, you could do with some lessons. I hope you get some help with this.

This is good advice so thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'm going to begin by having a serious purge of the photos. Many are very similar - (I tend to take a few pics of the same view) and there are many I can't even remember where they were taken. When that's done I can make a start.
