Look North is after the BBC main News at 6pm and 10pm.
After the main news there are about 20 or more regional news programmes where you get local news and views in all the UK.
It's a mix of serious news and always finds and praises community initiatives and so on.

Hundreds of thousands of viewers watch it nightly (checked my figures. -around 600.000) - its one of the most watched regional news items , and the schools where the interviews took place were in Bradford with 4000 participants.

But is it really so very, very different from some celebs "now"? The. younger ones are just stripping off more.

I feel sort of sad that the movement of "loving your body as it is, whether you be skinny or a large lady or have a disability"

seems to have been overwhelmed by what is just a continuation of what has gone?

Nothing wrong with looking good for yourself or others in a natural and self accepting sort of way whoever you are.

The Andrew Tates of this world - look at the women they choose and parade on their arms - they fit the stereotype.

In the past it used to be Kate Moss, blamed for the heroine chic look. Now Joan Collins, at the age of 92, is being blamed for young girls plastering their faces with makeup up, teenagers who’ve probably never ever heard of her, on a programme I’ve never heard of called Look North. Whatever happened to personal responsibility? If I choose to plaster myself with makeup, get drugged up to the eyeballs, drink myself silly what celebrity should I blame? This whole argument is absurd. When I look at photos in the news of people on race days such as Aintree or recently Chester races all glammed up, enjoying themselves, I don’t think oh that must be Joan Collins influence.

This thread originated about most of us celebrating the fact that a lady of 92 is still looking fabulous at an age where many don’t bother, never have bothered or are dead. She’s still working, pulls out all the stops to get her new film noticed and looks absolutely amazing. I know who I’d rather have as my role model.

Of course young girls aren't looking at her specifically, I'm seeing it as a social and cultural phenomena and the damage it can do.

I do have strong feelings when I feel cultural tendencies may harm people.
Maybe its influenced by girls and young women I've met struggling because of trying to live up to what is put out there?

Joan is "old school glamour"
At the age of 92 she is more likely to have influenced these young girls great-grandmothers, if she did at all. Were we influenced by film stars like her? I wasn't.

There are so many "influencers" on social media now, vapid looks, pouty filler-enhanced lips, botoxed cheeks, who may, unfortunately, be rôle models for young girls who will never have heard of Joan.

It's a different world now.

I also exercise (Pilates, Callanetics, HIT, circuits etc.) for me

There are thousands if not millions of women round the world who refuse to equate aging with pinafores. I love fashion and style.

Very much agree! Women no longer have to 'conform ' to anyone's ideals but their own, such freedom hasn't come easily and we should celebrate ourselves and our sisters.
The young ones (that I know) are very into this and are supportive of each other enormously
I also think Joan Collins a rather good role model for any younger woman, brilliant career, still working had her fair share of knocks and still stealing the stage.

I do totally agree we shouldn't rely on others how we choose to live our lives but I actually think that is very difficult. Few are free of what people think about them or concerns about how they come across especially in this era of social media, "influencers" glam:

If you feel the urge to point the finger then look at modern day celebrities for that. However, the world we live in girls use make up to make themselves feel better. Joan Collins is 92. I do agree about the exercise she does being great for well being in every way. I love the gym and how it makes one feel better and keep active and mobile yes and stand up straight is a key Yoga/Pilates thing.

But we are in a culture atm where for example on a programme on Look North last night every single girl in a school being interviewed about a scheme to limit the hours of social media ages around 13 to 16 had felt it necessary to plater not he make up - young faces, beautiful as they are.

And have we really forgot the intense pressures still to be thin:

thin = beautiful and the rate of eating disorders gone up

And the bullying of girls because not of who they are but because of how they look? and for some, the consequences of that bullying?

I don't think you understand the fact that Joan Collins has probably always lived in a different world to the majority of us. Her father was a well-known theatrical agent, she appeared on the stage from a young age and went to RADA as a teenager, then straight into the film industry.

That's what many film stars do - wear makeup and 'glam up' in public. It's a way of life. It might not be ours but we all choose different paths in life.

The bullying of girls by boys has worsened in recent years and has more to do with the likes of Andrew Tate than women like Joan Collins.

Joan Collins is an actress. She is advertising her latest film about Wallis Simpson. Of course she’s going to put the effort in to look incredible and at 92 she does just that. She’s not a painted doll trying to attract a man, as others said, because she is happily married to Percy and has been for many years. Most women, and men, can admire the effort she has made at 92 to look as good as she does and wear high heels into the bargain. Nobody should underestimate the effort all this takes when it would be so easy to sit at home, slob about, make comments about painted dolls and be sanctimonious and miserable.

All power to Joan and long may she continue. After the career she’s had, its longevity, she is a true old glamour Hollywood star and there’s very few of them left. I note Jane Fonda was also there looking very good too.

Apparently she can do the splits too!

No one has commented on how JC stands and I think that's something that is often overlooked. She stands up straight like a much younger woman and that comes from looking after her body by continuing to do regular exercise that strengthens, conditions and stretches. She's done pilates for decades and also continues to do exercise to maintain muscle mass. You can wear a wig, improve your looks with treatments and make up but there's no quick fix for a body that has ceased to function because it's not been cared for. Joan has looked after hers and it shows!

There's a buzzword about Joan Collins going round at the Cannes Festival, and it's incroyable. Incredible.
Not only is her appeal timeless, it appears it's universal too.

As I posted earlier, I am thrilled to see a very much older woman out and about, clearly loving life. As for that somewhat judgemental phrase about lambs and mutton, I would suggest the alternative version - " who wants to dress as mutton"?

As regards the O/P, imo its just got to the gross level of artificiality that signifies the desire to be appreciated just for how you look and the pressure to look young, younger = attractive

It's in the title ....... how to steal the show - meaning how to to attract the most attention at the glamorous event. And probably performing better than everyone half her age because it's still in her blood her whole life.

I am sick of women criticising what other women choose to wear and look. My mother used to say,if you can't say something nice, keep your mouth shut. When it comes to the criticism of other women's clothes and makeup I think it's a good plan.

Obviously Joan is not going into a mental decline, as so unkindly mooted on this thread, she is still working and has just completed another film The Bitter End about the final years of the Duchess of Windsor released this month.

Totally agree. She looked good. The dress was not to my taste, si what it would be boring if we were all the same. but she carried well.
