Bar shampoo - anyone ever tried it?

I have used a Gruum shampoo bar (it was actually circular!) and am comme ci comme ca about it. It was OK but a little fiddly to use (it's quite small and if your hands are arthritic, somewhat difficult to hold). There were several different types to choose from.

I have returned to my usual shampoo as the bottle is easier to hold/deal with. I didn't try their conditioner.

As others have mentioned, there is a warning not to judge the shampoo bars on the first few uses, as your hair will take a couple of weeks to adjust.

If you haven't tried them, give them a go - they may just suit you.

Yes, love them. I've been ordering from Grùum for a few years now. I love their shampoo bars and soaps too.
I have an ecoegg but haven't let go of my fabric conditioner yet. I'm working on it though. I only do one or 2 washes per week (only me) so I'm sure by the time this bottle runs out I will have sourced an alternative I'm happy with.
I did try a cream type antiperspirant. The main ingredient seemed to be bicarbonate of soda. It didn't work for me. Nice reusable glass jar though.

I ordered some a month before going away from a supplier on Etsy or EBay for my holiday, been back a week and it’s still not arrived, seller is blaming the postal strike but I’ve had an order from China since!!

All I ever use now. Really seems to suit my hair and no itchy scalp anymore. My dog gets a rare bath once a year if needed and I use the same on her, no issues with it and I reckon if it's just natural ingredients it's okay for her.

When I was young we had to use soap to wash our hair. Shampoo wasn't available and my Mum wouldn't have been able to afford it. I've still got a full head of hair even if it is grey instead of its original brown. Sometimes new doesn't mean better.or worse.

Been using for a long time. Last much longer than a bottle of shampoo at comparable price. Hair feels lovely as well.

Used it for years now. It lasts ages. I seem to have to wash my hair less and it's in better condition (for my advancing years!) As someone else said "no brainer".

Tried one from lush. Smelt lovely but just made my hair awful. I know that sometimes you need to try them for a while to settle down but it just didn't happen.

I haven't tried any others because buying something that I ultimately end up throwing away is way more wasteful than my usual shampoo in recyclable containers.

I second grumpy, and you can try it for free, just pay postage. Shampoo and conditioning bars.

I find Lush products over perfumed and dislike their political credentials so would rather not purchase from them.

A couple of weeks ago my husband used the last of my Marcell's Green Soap Shampoo (recyclable bottle, not bar) so as a last resort I used our dog's shampoo. It's very mild and all natural ingredients. It was lovely, easy to rinse out and my hair was definitely shiny.

I used it 75 years ago when, as a very little girl, my mum used to wash my hair with a bar a green Fairy; in fact, that bar of soap was used for every cleaning task in the house from washing up to bathing!

We have used 'Eco Warrior' shampoo bars ( currently on offer at Waitrose) for years. They tick every box - cruelty free, vegan, SLS free - and have won many awards. They wash hair beautifully, and my only gripe is that if dropped on the shower floor when fairly well worn, they break. However, I got around that by putting the pieces into a small net bag, and rubbing that on my hair. A bar lasts far longer than a bottle of shampoo, and there is just a simple cardboard box to recycle.

Yes, I’ve tried a few, not all are good. Some of the early ones were really difficult to rinse out. Finally I found a company called KinKind who make really good shampoo bars, conditioner not quite so good but ok. The shampoo lathers up really well in your hands and then through your hair. Makes my scalp feel really tingly and clean, rinses out well and leaves my hair soft and shiny.

I converted to a shampoo bar last year and am very happy with the one I use, Friendly Soap Fragrance Free, price £2.95, lasts for months.

When I was a child my mum also washed my hair with soap once a week. No hair driers then so had to sit in front of the fire or in summer in the sun.
As you say soap was used for practically every household task. All we had was Sunlight soap, Vim scouring powder, soda for washing up, Pears soap for personal use. Cannot remember using bleach.
I have always only washed my hair once a week with an olive oil shampoo and now use a leave in conditioner. Toilet soap for body wash. No shower gel.

I bought a bar shampoo while staying in South Wales and it worked beautifully. When I got home it was a disaster, because of our very hard water. Even my usual vinegar rinse didn't sort it out very well so back to the usual.

Sorrt to veer off topic but Vim and Ajax - I remember them well!
Can you still buy them?
Could posters please give the make of any product(s) they recommend or aren't we allowed to?

I remember my father used to use a bar of green soft soap to shampoo his hair.

My hair is below shoulder length and I find it easier to apply to my hair if I lather it between my hands first then rub it through my hair and scalp. In fact I’m sure that’s what was advised in the instructions.
I too remember having my hair washed with Fairy soap as a child. Even after copious rinsing it left a nasty residue which dried like dandruff. It was meant to be a household cleaning soap after all.

I have 'silver' hair and have been using White Hot Hair products for a while... Love them.
Am now using the soap bar which is fabulous...

I’ve only tried one once. My head gradually itched more and more during the day and by the evening my scalp was coming off in huge flakes. My scalp bled and stung for days. I’ve not been brave enough to try again!

It sounds as though it would take more time and be more of a faff with long hair. I’m not one to hang around in the shower. And don’t you end up with hairs wrapped round the bar?
