Inspired by Soop’s kitchen, I wondered if any of you are brave (?) enough to post a picture of you in your wedding dress?
Go on, go on, go on!
Should be symbol stars in the above message where it says "ex is an ........"
They stars were not added in the post for some reason even though they showed on the preview
Nearly 61 years ago, how styles change.
For the better I think.
I chucked mine out years ago I hated it so fussy my Mam chose it yuk
We were married in the local register office, as I didn't want the hoo-ha that usually went with a white wedding.
My dress was made by my grandmother who was a tailor. It was mustard coloured, loosely fitted and had gold threading through it. As it was a winter wedding, I wore a mustard coat over it with fox fur collar. Long hair 'done up' which, on reflection, didn't suit me. Come to think of it, neither did the colours... I used to think I was 'Autumn' colouring. Now I would go for spring or summer colours.
Anyway, that was over 50 years ago, and still going strong so something must have been right.
First wedding dress was hired - a lovely sparkly bodice with all the trimmings and veil, but it was early April 1971 and I was frozen! Second wedding I was in a pair of M&S burgundy pyjamas, a short fake fur jacket and burgundy shoes that were too small for me. (And I was frozen again. It was January and on my birthday).
Neither marriage lasted, sadly, so maybe there was a lesson for me to learn there, but I and I don't intend to go through another charade, even in the height of summer!
I’ve been married 3 time.
Aged 18
Aged 25
Aged 42
Happily married to number 3 for 20 years now.
I was pregnant when I got married in 1969, got married in an orange and brown straight dress which covered the bump. Sometimes regretted not having the white dress but we didn't have much money - the marriage lasted anyway and the dress was useful for the next pregnancy!
Ours was a registry office wedding. I never wanted a white wedding as the thought of being the center of attention horrified me! We also had two babies already, so our wedding had to be a quick one so I could get back to feed the littlest.
So, instead, I’m posting a picture of my lovely maternal grandparents on their wedding day, 18th Sept, 1912
Ahead of the "Wedding" exhibition the V&A launched a database where ordinary people (such as me) uploaded wedding photos. We were encouraged to detail the dress, who had made it, what the others wore etc. It was fascinating.
I've just been looking for the link but only found an online article about it:
www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1285624/The-V-A-launched-database-wedding-fashion.html
Thought I'd email the V&A to see if it's still available.
I loved seeing all the beautiful pictures. Glowing brides! I have no photo as we'd just promised to wait 6 months and sneaked off to a registry office and grabbed two witnesses, cleaners, from round the building. I wore an orange/red tent coat and they got me a chair in a hurry, but i didn't have first child for 4 years
. I wanted to be able to sail with husband, who was in the merchant navy, and only wives could sail not gfs. I did sail a few months later. And I got married in the morning and started my first serious job in the afternoon! Had just finished my seccy course and began at the BBC External services. I went back there during husband's leaves.
I bought my wedding dress in the sale at Shepard's of Gateshead for £7 in 1980! I wanted to jazz it up a bit but refused to pay the price for real lace ( what a cheapskate!) so used curtain net instead. Looked alright to me!
Great discussion
Mine was cream wild silk Grecian style, backless with a lace front and narrow cream ribbon around the waist. No veil and my (then long auburn) hair was plaited from the sides to keep the rest off my face and secured at the back with cream ribbons and roses.
We were married in Ireland and honeymoon was a 3 week driving holiday in Italy visiting Capri and the Costa Smeralda...in a Capri, one of the first.
