I’ve still got very long hair, usually tied up in a messy bun type thing which looks ok ( I think ? grin ) now apart from not knowing what to do about the grey I’m also not sure if I should chop the lot off!
It’s still in relatively good condition which is probably why I’ve hung onto it.
Interested in your thoughts.
Long hair over 50.
Ok, or time to call it a day?

Unlike everyone else I have short hair! I am 62 and my hair is still strawberry blonde, no grey. I’ve never dyed it fully but have had the occasional highlights. I think it depends on what suits you and what your comfortable with. I had shoulder length hair until 3 weeks ago and I just couldn’t handle it. I’ve got a little face and it swamped me so I went for a pixie cut.....again! I did work for a company many years ago who as part of their training programme had a stylist come in to advise on what colours, dress etc suited you best. I had longish hair at the time and was told in no uncertain terms that women over 40 shouldn’t have long hair! They wouldn’t get away with that nowadays.

I've always had long hair and find it so much easier to manage,it is to the middle of my back and just been cut 3ins to tidy up the ends,I have a trim every 6mths on length and trim my fringe every 4 weeks.
I wear it up mostly with a scrunchie tied into a messy bun or a bulldog clip of which I have many.
Its blonde out of a bottle and needs 2 boxes of colour every 8 weeks or so.
I would never have short hair again the last time was 30 yrs ago and I found it too hard to manage and keep tidy.

I am 55 and at the moment my hair is just on my shoulders. I am in the process of growing it longer now as I had to have it cut due to having it stripped of colour, so I could go natural, which damaged it . If I’ve added pics correctly the 1st one shows my hair in April 2018 and the second was September 2018

Can't do long hair, too fine and I need height on crown. Long hair just pulls everything down. So bob style for me. Everyone should do what they want with their hair; long, short, white, coloured. Long, almost white hair left to hang free does though to me, look like a witch, much better when tied up, ponytail, bun etc. It's your hair, do what you will.

I found a marvellous hairdresser who cuts mine in layers, slightly shorter at the back, long on top and graduated sides which I can pull back with tortoishell combs or jaw-clips.
It's the most flattering cut I've had in years and needs no fiddling before going out.
I think it all depends on your face shape and your looks as to what suits you.
No-one can advise with certainty, only perhaps a hairdresser.
Friends are, perhaps, never going to be truthful.

Mumben
Your hair looks so much more healthy in the later photo. The first one does you no favours as I myself found out.
Too dark and it looks a block colour u like The second pic where it looks really glam.

I wore my hair long (and dyed) in my 50s, but had it cut short by a brilliant hairdresser who specialized in mature women's hair when I was 58. My natural colour was dark brown, but I had two white streaks which I thought would made me look like a badger, so I continued to colour. When I retired my hairdresser said because I had short hair the transition to grey would be easy - I could either go for higlights/lowlights and gradually blend it out or just go for it. I decided to just go for it and stopped colouring it! Three years on my hair is now silver grey with white streaks highlights and I get lots of compliments. One lady even asked how much it cost to have it coloured like that? wink

I have shoulder length hair at the moment, though prefer a jaw length bob, and have previously grown it to between my shoulder blades - though this was more to do with the fact that my day off was on a Monday (ever found a hairdressers open on that day?),I worked Saturdays, and only had 30 minutes for lunch.
Long hair can be quite fun as you can vary how it looks by having it up or down.
If you feel comfortable with it long, keep it! Or have it cut shorter to see how it goes - it can always grow again!
For those that say hairdressers are expensive, I'd suggest either having a dry cut or taking advantage of the discount days for the over 60s(if you are) or if your local FE college has a beauty dept, they often look for models for students to practice on!( Overseen by fully qualified tutors)My local town's college has it's own town centre beauty and hairdressing salon.

I'm 62 and have long hair. Usually wear it up in a clip or messy bun.
Do dye it and do take biotin. I am pretty sure I will always have long hair as I always have and I like long hair . People often tell me it looks nice so that's a good sign.

KayR Wed 27-Mar-19 10:30:59

I've been growing my hair for about 2 years, it's a slow process! It's now shoulder length and I do colour it. I've often thought of having it cut but the versatility of longer hair is what I love, so I probably won't. I only wash it every 2 days now, which is better for it than the daily wash, and it's easy to manage when I'm on holiday. Do what you feel, don't be swayed by out of date protocol!! I'm 68.

Cobweb01 Wed 27-Mar-19 10:35:03

My hair almost reaches the middle of my back and is in good condition - as long as it stays like this I will keep it long regardless of colour. Have your hair how you like it and feel comfortable with, that's all that matters.

NanaSuzy Wed 27-Mar-19 10:36:32

I am tall with a long face and so I look terrible with short hair. Plus I have a rotten profile; I'm lucky that my hair is wavy and so a bit of length makes a whole softer look. Currently a short of jaw-length bob, but thinking of letting it get a lot longer. (Cos I hate going to the hairdressers). I'm 69.

Kim19 Wed 27-Mar-19 10:40:04

I've short hair because I'm lazy, not good with hair and socialise often at short notice which makes my life much easier.

starbox Wed 27-Mar-19 10:58:49

I'm 56 and after a lifetime of alternately growing and chopping it - and several years recently of keeping it all tied up neatly - have decided to let it go! Growing out fringe, wearing it loose, it's fairly long how and going for waist length. Did attempt going grey but abandoned it and just touch up roots with about 1/4 of a box of dye (just make it up in a separate container- cheaper & much less mess than doing the lot & avoids build-up of colour!) Feeling positively girlish and far younger than when worn more sensibly!

BRedhead59 Wed 27-Mar-19 11:01:04

Mine is falling out and I'm noticing other ladies with the same problem. Is there more of it about?

annifrance Wed 27-Mar-19 11:15:07

IMHO long hair on 50 plus is usually very inelegant. I have seem very few women of that age range who can wear long hair loose and look good. Shoulder length is just about OK if the hair is thick and well kept. Otherwise sweep it up into some sort of style or cut it shorter.

My very dear friend has recently grown her rather sparse hair to half way down her back. It looks absolutely dreadful, ages her considerably, but looks OK up. I wouldn't dream of saying anything unless she asked what I thought, then I would temper my response.

sarahellenwhitney Wed 27-Mar-19 11:30:28

Long hair to the shoulders and beyond for the 70+, together with, as many do and have the cash, a bit lifted here and a bit lifted there, can or will hide the fact that they are no longer 'spring grinchickens'.
A bun will in most cases suit any age and I would go for that should you chose to keep your 'crowning glory.'

Hazeld Wed 27-Mar-19 11:44:54

Hi Kandinsky. I just wanted to say, I'm 66 and my hair is nearly waist level and I have no intentions of having it cut off just yet. I love long hair whatever age you are and if you love it why should you even think about it? I had my blonde (dyed) hair coloured red underneath last year and everyone said how nice it looked ( They were probably thinking 'What? At her age?) but I don't care. It's my hair and I'll have it how I want. I'll be going back to blonde for the summer or some kind of greyish to match my grey roots. Rock it if you've got it.

MamaCaz Wed 27-Mar-19 11:57:53

I have thick, uncontrollable hair, and once it reaches a certain length, it starts to grow outwards instead of downwards
I can grow 'wide' hair (not a good look at any age!), but unfortunately not 'long' hair.

For similar reasons to those given by NanaSuzy, I don't suit short hair, so I have to settle for somewhere between long and short.

grandtanteJE65 Wed 27-Mar-19 12:10:14

I am 67 and have waist long hair, which is thinner now than I like. I wear it up and have done since I left school.

I had my hair cut short for a year when I was seven and hated it, I can't imagine deciding to cut mine again.

We none of us know what old age will bring, so I might have to one day, if I no longer can wash and brush it.

NanaSuzy Wed 27-Mar-19 12:14:31

MamaCaz yes mine was wide the last time I had it longer, which was in my twenties. I'm hoping that being a bit finer now at my age it won't start that again!! Mamas and Papas reference?

Mouse Wed 27-Mar-19 12:29:35

My hair was just below shoulder length and the colour was salt and pepper but darker at the back. Two weeks ago on the spur of the moment I had it cut into a short bob with blonde highlights. I’ve had so many compliments I’m glad I did it but that doesn’t mean I won’t grow it again. Short or long, whatever you fancy, I don’t think age has anything to do with it smile

PurpleWitch Wed 27-Mar-19 12:54:39

I'm 60 and still have long hair although not as long as it used to be. My plait used to reach my hip bone, now it's only bra length. I don't know why it's so short unless illness affects hair growth. I also dye it, assorted shades of red - darker in winter, brighter in summer. I used to have shocking pink hair in my 20s but I'm not sure I can get away with it now.
A disadvantage with short hair is constant trips to the hairdresser to keep it looking good. If you feel good with long hair, keep it.
