Will someone please explain to me in simple language how scoring works. Can't full enjoy because I dont understand the game.

Are you watching the men’s final? 🎾🎾

Cossy Sun 12-Jul-26 18:44:51

Very simplistically.
Normally

Singles women play up to 3 sets
singles men play up to 5 set

Each set is made up of a number of games.

for each set first player to reach 6 games (though this can vary in tie breaks etc).

To win a game a player has to win the point once they hit 40 points.

Points are given for each point won ths:-

15
30
40
Win

I think I’ve explained this very badly so over to someone else please

🤣🤣🤣

Cossy I think that's a really good overview.
Do want Sasha to win, some of the columnists were so dismissive of his chances.

Cossy Sun 12-Jul-26 18:48:29

Mr Google says

“The Scoring: Points are scored as 15, 30, 40, and Game. A set is won by the first to reach 6 games (by a 2-game margin), with a tiebreak played at 6-6.The Serve: The server must hit the ball diagonally into the opponent's opposite service box. They get two attempts (a first and second serve). The server must remain behind the baseline. The Ball: A ball hitting any part of the boundary lines is considered "in." The receiver must let the ball bounce before returning it over the net“

I too want Sasha to win 🎾🎾🎾

MawsRosie Sun 12-Jul-26 18:50:18

You think tennis is complicated?
Try cricket gringrin

MG55 Sun 12-Jul-26 18:52:21

Great explanations!! 👏

Cabbie21 Sun 12-Jul-26 19:27:55

Just to add that in tennis, Love = 0.
15-love means the server has won the first point.
15 All means each player has won one point.
If they both reach 40, the score is Deuce.

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jul-26 19:33:05

I'm lost after "Deuce!"

MaizieD Sun 12-Jul-26 19:39:07

MissAdventure

I'm lost after "Deuce!"

Then it goes to 'advantages'. I can't possibly explain them,

Tennis is not my game grin

Cricket? Easy....

MissAdventure Sun 12-Jul-26 19:41:31

Oh yes, I think I know the "advantage" stage.
Is it three, then the person has won?

MayBee70 Sun 12-Jul-26 19:44:59

Seems that tennis players are now allowed to get advice from their coaches during matches ( as is happening in the World Cup, too). Not sure that I agree with it confused

Pittcity Sun 12-Jul-26 19:47:17

Deuce, Advantage, win or back to deuce if you lose the point.

I'm backing Sinner because of the stories about Zverev abusing girlfriends. He just doesn't seem as "nice" as Sinner.

Bellasnana Sun 12-Jul-26 19:54:16

I agree Pittcity. Find it hard to believe anyone supports him after he was accused of Domestic abuse by two exes, one the mother of his daughter. I believe them 100% as he has often shown his nasty temper. He also weaseled out of a trial by paying a fine of €200,000 to the court. I can’t stand him.

VANECAM Sun 12-Jul-26 20:05:31

Who decides when they have a drinks break (in tennis)?

And where is the person who keeps shouting “out”?

Pittcity Sun 12-Jul-26 20:12:13

It is a robot that judges the lines and calls "out". It used to be a group of line judges stood around the court but they were recently made redundant.

Pittcity Sun 12-Jul-26 20:14:44

They change ends and have a drink after an odd numbered game. There is a longer break between sets.

I know! It’s so weird!

Plevey08 Sun 12-Jul-26 20:33:04

Oh no Pitcity, that's upset me as I really wanted Zverez to win. I hadn't heard about any domestic abuse. I'm glad that Sinner won now. I just thought how amazing to manage type 1 diabetes at that level of sport.

VANECAM Sun 12-Jul-26 20:35:15

Why do both teams wear the same colour kit?

Shelflife Sun 12-Jul-26 21:00:19

Thankyou!" I am a bit clearer now - I think !? Throughly enjoyed the match. Sinner is a worthy victor!

Grannybags Sun 12-Jul-26 21:05:04

VANECAM

Why do both teams wear the same colour kit?

It’s traditional for all players to wear white at Wimbledon

Shelflife Sun 12-Jul-26 21:08:40

Plevey, you are correct . Managing type 1 diabetes is a challenge at the best of times . The physical effort and the heat makes it even more difficult. My teenage GC was diagnosed age 3 so I have knowledge of the condition.
Disappointed to know Zverez was accused of domestic abuse.

Plevey08 Sun 12-Jul-26 21:28:45

A pupil at the secondary school where I taught was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager...he found it very hard and suffered so much. I bumped into him in his workplace years later and the first thing he said was how well he was managing the diabetes now. He said that being a teenager and given that diagnosis was very hard for him. So your GC being diagnosed very young will be much more able to continue to manage it well I hope as he/she will be very used to it Shelflife. I wish your GC well.
