BBC 4 Extra To Be Wound Up Next Spring

The BBC has to find 500 million in cuts so some services have to go and 4 Extra is one of them.

I'm just surprised it's taken so long to make this decision - this particular service is little more than a repository for dead and lame archive programmes that weren't entertaining, funny or informative the first time around.

ITMA, Whacko, The Clitheroe Kid, Life With The Lyons and cobwebby re-runs of Desert Island Discs to name but a few dead ducks. Not good enough BEEB!

Only the odd Agatha Christie is worthy of a replay. But that's all.

I wish the whole of the BBC could be wound up. It should be defunded. It’s biased and outdated.

I disagree totally with the above comments.

I love Radio 4 Extra. It’s a bit of sanity in an insane world. Be careful what you wish for. If we get rid of the BBC, we will regret it. In my opinion.

The only radio I listen to are Radio 3 unwind and Radio 4 extra and I was horrified to see that 4 extra is for the chop. However on re reading it will still be able to access it on Sounds hopefully they will still maintain it.

The dramas, books and spoken word with NO news jarring my equilibrium is all I ask.

Radio 3 is my constant companion.
BBC4 brings me concerts and wonderful arts programmes.

Without the BBC we will finish up with dumbed down advert ridden uniformity.

I don't think the cuts are as drastic as they first appear. Much of the content will still be available on iPlayer and Sounds. It's essentially a cut to linear i.e. live broadcasting.

I hope the BBC survives as a public service. It's always been subject to political pressure from governments of both Labour and Tories but has usually been able to resist. It's obviously at risk from hard Left and hard Right critics.

The BBC does need to change, perhaps BBC3 should be saved for sport instead of some of the niche programmes which must cost money to produce but very few watch.
Of course, BBC1 and 2 would then have to produce more quality programmes which would cost more so that could be Catch 22.

The BBCis a treasure.

Of course BBC is a National Treasure - but some bits need a good pruning.
