Criticising other posters contributions

I have a chocolate cake in the oven (it's 11.14 am here), the little one is having a nap, pizzas are thawing for lunch when the other four grandchildren return from the cinema and have washed and refilled the cats' litter trays. I am working – well not exactly at this minute – and shall ice the cake and sprinkle with colourful thingies when it is baked and cold. They can have that for pudding.

Btw Not only do I iron almost everything – not underwear – but I also do a weekly batch of ironing for absentdaughter. There's love for you!

Later on I shall spend a happy hour while you are all asleep criticising other people's posts.

See, as I said, you are all lovely, lovely people, some of whom even iron - and absent I'm sure your criticism will be purely constructive and good natured.

Went to physio. Told to wait another 5/52 until I can take up physio. Cooked my supper. Had drink and now going to bed!

Aka Colourful thingies were brown (chocolate) and yellow (banana) crunchy sprinkles. Cat litter is white crystallline so I didn't get them confused (a truly horrible thought). Chocolate cake went down a treat, as well as the pizzas. The eldest grandson, who will be 12 on Sunday, has requested a bigger version for a birthday cake. I shall probably oblige if I can find 10 minutes – it's a very speedy, foolproof boiled cake and dead simple chocolate icing.

Too late for absent's cake recipe - damn it! I made a twelve inch chocolate cake covered in chocolate icing with lots of 'stuff' on top for Mum's birthday, yesterday!

This is a thread about cakes isn't it?

160 g/51/2 oz caster sugar
1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
50 g/2 oz butter, plus extra for greasing
120 ml/4 fl oz milk
1 medium egg, lightly beaten
175 g/6 oz self-raising flour

Icing
225 g/8 oz icing sugar
3 tablespoons cocoa powder
3–5 tablespoons milk
3–5 tablespoons melted butter
sprinkles, hundreds and thousands, grated chocolate, sweeties, to decorate

1 Put the sugar, bicarbonate of soda, cocoa powder, butter, milk and 4 tablespoons water into a saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove the pan from the heat and leave to cool completely.

2 Preheat the oven to 180°C (Gas Mark 4). Grease and line a 20-cm/8-inch round cake tin.

3 Stir the egg and flour into the cooled mixture, making sure that everything is well mixed. Scrape the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 30 minutes or until a wooden cocktail stick inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean.

4 Remove the tin from the oven, turn out the cake on to a wire rack to cool and remove and discard the lining paper.

5 To make the icing, sift together the icing sugar and cocoa powder into a bowl. Add the milk and melted butter alternately, 1 tablespoon at a time, and mix well after each addition. Stop when the icing is spreadable but not stiff.

6 Spread the icing over the cooled cake with a palette knife and decorate according to taste. The icing sets very quickly.

Absent - thank you so much for the chocolate cake recipe. Boiled cakes are so easy. I regularly make a boiled fruit cake, so we always have cake available. I shall carefully write down your recipe, and make one as soon as I've finished ironing….

Just a thought Absent. Will this recipe work just as well in a Loaf Tin?

I've never tried making a boiled cake so am dying to have a go at this one - thanks for the recipe. Not today though - it's a fast day for me.....

Going to try that one for grandsons at weekend. Will have a little try out today too. Think it will be good. It sounds a very chocolatey chocolate cake.

ffinnochio Probably, but I would check it with the cocktail stick from 25 minutes baking onwards.

Or open a box of Devil's Food Cake by Mary Crocker and a tub of her very tasty fudge icing. Cheating but still lovely
