That should be encouraging for our Phoenix, but I hope she does not have to wait 2,000 years for her new job.

Well done, elegran! I've just had a reply and was going to post that it is a cultivar of Phoenix dactylifera.

Another tick for Google. It sounds like a wonder fruit. If they can get it cloned and into cultivation maybe they will find a miracle drug in it? Well, it is just possible, why not?

Interesting that the Romans destroyed the plantations as an economic form of oppression - scorched earth policy?.

Thanks for the Latin folks. It makes it so much easier to understand what we're discussing. But if you're really interested in ancient flora might I direct you to the Wollemi Pine from Australia. In 1994 100 plants were discovered in an isolated valley. They had survived from the time before the continents drifted to their present positions. The plants were recognised from 120 million year old fossils and thought to be extinct. They have been cloned and are now being spread across the globe to ensure their survival. Beats a 2000 year old palm tree hands-down.
