I found your post very interesting too, nannaAnna. I respect what is worthy of respect, which includes all reasonable people which, in turn, includes most Moslems, certainly all the ones I've ever met. I still have a problem respecting "The Moslem Faith" or "Islam" because, unfortunately, there are too many incidences of utterly unreasonable, not to say horrific, types of behaviour in the world which are done "in the name of Islam", such as what is described in this Guardian article describing Islamist extremists hounding someone in Mali for something as innocent as.... wait for it..... playing music
Sorry, but I can't respect that kind of thing, nor do I think I should. If ordinary decent Moslems want me to respect their religion, they need to start dealing with these thugs who too often wreck people's lives "in the name of Islam."
I think it is very sad that the face of Islam that we often get to see has corroded to this state. It reminds me of the Inquisition of the Catholic Church which was equally horrific and which I also can't respect. And yet, the culture of the Islamic world was once the most advanced..... Very sad.
goldengirl mentions blind people asking to touch faces in order to be able to 'see' them. I have come across that too. Another proof, to me, of how important faces are in human culture.
beachee tells the story of a respected woman feeling the need to cover her mouth when she spoke because voices (females ones only, presumably) are "deemed suggestive". Am I really supposed to 'respect' such a screwed up attitude? Really? Well, I don't, and I'm not ashamed to say that. I would, I am sure, respect the woman, and I would understand that it was cultural pressure or tradition which caused her to adopt this behaviour, but I do not respect the behaviour and I do not respect the severely screwed up ideas that lead to the behaviour. I pity anyone who has all that crap to deal with in their daily lives.
If anyone expected me to behave like that I'd be outraged, and I hope other gransnetters would be too.
Tolerance and respect do not discourage people from viewing females just speaking as normal.
