Many of you know that my daughter and her husband emigrated to New Zealand two and a half years ago. I returned from my Greek holiday three weeks ago to the news that in our absence my son in law had been home to visit his mum who had just been diagnosed with cancer and he flew back to NZ on the day we came home. The cancer was very aggressive and the doctors felt that there was little time left.
Two weeks ago my daughter told me that she and her husband had booked tickets to the UK (so that my daughter could say her own goodbyes) and they arrived today, but sadly my son in law's mum died hours before they left NZ. She was only 63 and it was just six weeks from diagnosis to death.
I have been really excited at the prospect of seeing them both, but obviously I feel saddened by the circumstances - hence: bittersweet.

Oh dear! Got me thinking that in many ways life was easier before people started breaking with tradition.
