Freesat feedback thread - Non Testers: what would you do with an extra £360 a year? You could win a Freesat+ box NOW CLOSED

This is the feedback thread for the 10 testers who have received a new Freesat+ TV box and who are currently trying it out in their homes.

Freesat say "Hello. We're Freesat. We believe you shouldn't have to pay a monthly subscription to watch and listen to 180 channels of the best comedy, drama, sport, lifestyle, music and news. We offer free HD services from ITV, the BBC and Channel 4; Freesat+ to record pause and rewind, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand; and all subscription free."

Freesat launched <freetime> last autumn which includes a Roll Back TV Guide that allows you to watch programmes you've missed from the previous seven days across 21 channels, a new showcase section providing top TV picks chosen daily by Freesat's reviewers, on-demand services and enhanced recordings.

Freesat is a subscription free service and Freesat+ boxes are available to buy from a range of retailers - RRP from £226.

The Freesat+ box allows you to record, pause and rewind TV, as well as featuring BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

If you're not a tester, Freesat would love to hear from you. An average satellite TV bill (including On Demand services) is around £30 per month, if you could have Freesat what would you with an extra £30 per month (£360 per year). Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a Freesat Humax box.

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a couple of weeks (or when you're ready) we would like you to answer the follow-up questions.

So, in terms of your first impressions. please....

~ give your overall impression when it arrived

~ describe the set up: did you set up your Freesat box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you/your DH/DP etc find it to set up your Freesat box?

~ tell us which TV is it on/in which room

~ share what you/your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use Freesat?

~ Has your child/children or grandchild/grandchildren used Freesat? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

Sorry for delay - I have just seen the PM you sent. I'm another one who does not seem to get e.mail telling me there is a PM.

How long did it take you to understand how to use Freesat?

Not long at all. It is fairly intuitive, much easier to use than expected.

~ Has your child/children or grandchild/grandchildren used Freesat? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

All 3 DGC (2 aged 6 and 1 aged 4.5) have no problems with it. I told them the channel numbers for CBBC and CBeebies and they went straight there and have investigated the other Children's channels too.

~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on Freesat so far?

All our usual soaps, Hignify, Lewis, Doc Martin, Quiz programmes. Having had Sky - with hundreds of channels - for years we are delighted to find that all our favourites are available on Freesat.

~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up

I have most enjoyed being able to record a programme and then watch it at a time of my choosing and Fast Forwarding through the adverts - bliss.

~ Who in your family has used your Freesat box the most?

DH but then he is the TV addict in the family - perhaps because he was 18 before his family had a TV set!

~ What have you found Freesat most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed? Entertaining the kids? Finding something to watch to pass time?

First Ministers Questions is required viewing for us but Thursday is also shopping day. Now we can set it to record and no need to rush home from the shops.

Overall very satisfied with Freesat. Cancelling Sky and saving around £36 per month.

I would give half to charity ........ probably food bank to help those not so lucky. Then I would invest in a popcorn maker and organise for ''friends nights'' to watch the wonderful films ( I might get some wine)
Also afternoon film time with the grandchildren

I have a granddaughter who has just started secondary school and a grandson who has just started college. They both need so many new text books and I would help them to buy them Would spend the remaining money on Christmas presents for the family.

Follow up:

I've found it extremely easy to use, the only issues are the fact that the itv3 catch up channel appears to be missing and the list of 'types of programme' is visible but the remote won't scroll through them.

OH uses it most to record things like Homeland which is shown at an inconvenient time. My grandchildren are too young to use it.

On the whole I'm enjoying it although there are many channels I haven't yet checked out. I tend to watch tv when I've got to the stage where I really have to tackle the ironing and I need to find something to watch to relieve the boredom. Freeview is ideal for that as I can always find something whether live or on demand.
