This is the feedback thread for the 10 testers who have received a new Freesat+ TV box and who are currently trying it out in their homes.

Freesat say "Hello. We're Freesat. We believe you shouldn't have to pay a monthly subscription to watch and listen to 180 channels of the best comedy, drama, sport, lifestyle, music and news. We offer free HD services from ITV, the BBC and Channel 4; Freesat+ to record pause and rewind, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand; and all subscription free."

Freesat launched <freetime> last autumn which includes a Roll Back TV Guide that allows you to watch programmes you've missed from the previous seven days across 21 channels, a new showcase section providing top TV picks chosen daily by Freesat's reviewers, on-demand services and enhanced recordings.

Freesat is a subscription free service and Freesat+ boxes are available to buy from a range of retailers - RRP from £226.

The Freesat+ box allows you to record, pause and rewind TV, as well as featuring BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

If you're not a tester, Freesat would love to hear from you. An average satellite TV bill (including On Demand services) is around £30 per month, if you could have Freesat what would you with an extra £30 per month (£360 per year). Everyone who adds a comment will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a Freesat Humax box.

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a couple of weeks (or when you're ready) we would like you to answer the follow-up questions.

So, in terms of your first impressions. please....

~ give your overall impression when it arrived

~ describe the set up: did you set up your Freesat box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you/your DH/DP etc find it to set up your Freesat box?

~ tell us which TV is it on/in which room

~ share what you/your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

Follow-up questions:

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use Freesat?

~ Has your child/children or grandchild/grandchildren used Freesat? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on Freesat so far?

~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up

~ Who in your family has used your Freesat box the most?

~ What have you found Freesat most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed? Entertaining the kids? Finding something to watch to pass time?

Thanks,

GNHQ

PS: Humax are offering Mumsnet and Gransnet an exclusive discount code to purchase a 500GB Humax Freesat+ box for £199. Up to 199 MNers and GNers can buy a discounted box using the code FT30

Gbear0382 Fri 27-Sept-13 18:10:13

It would really help paying for commuting to and from work. Train fares keep rising! sad

Lunchtimelady1 Fri 27-Sept-13 17:10:48

I would use it to have a break away with my husband... And if we had a freesat box we could, of course, record any favourites to view on our return!

oznan Fri 27-Sept-13 14:46:17

I would save it up and then treat my 3 grandchildren at Christmas.

grandmac Fri 27-Sept-13 13:45:47

I would share it between my two lovely, hard-working daughters, to help them cope with the ever-increasing living expenses.

inishowen Fri 27-Sept-13 11:42:27

I think I'd look for a special hotel deal and take my hubby away for a weekend. Somewhere we could drive to in a few hours would be nice.

bmteal Fri 27-Sept-13 11:27:16

I would save the monthly savings and at the end of the year treat my family and friends to a lovely well deserved meal. To say thank you to them for looking after me a lot just recently, through ill health. (smile).

jeanehouston Fri 27-Sept-13 11:17:23

I'd spend on treating my grand children when they visit me.

Smithy Fri 27-Sept-13 11:03:57

I would hide the money away and then at the end of the year have a lovely holiday, preferably in the sun.

rosemary55 Fri 27-Sept-13 10:31:33

£360.00, a year, I'd put it towards the ever increasing gas/electric bills!!

£360 would pay for a wonderful camping holiday with my family and some add on children's friends, I could stretch the funds to include petrol, campsite fees, food for us, some visits while we're away, some ice creams and marshmallows for the bonfire.

The engineer was very efficient, installed the dish in jig time and asked for a vacuum cleaner in case there was any dust. The box itself is small and fits neatly into the space below the television.

There was a cable supplied for Internet connection, however our router is too far away from the tv so we bought a wireless wifi adapter which does the trick.

Our only tv is in the sitting room.

The on demand feature doesn't appear to give us ITV Player, which is a pity as I can't get it on my tablet either. I'm not entirely sure if it should be available though.

The most immediate benefit is a vast improvement to the picture quality with no loss of signal which happened frequently with our previous box.

As yet I haven't recorded anything but it looks simple enough. I'll have more opportunity over the next week or two to find my way around it and I'll post again.

We are now plugged into tinternet and are still really enjoying having it. The record feature is fantastic - it is possible to record three programmes all being shown at the same time (Whitechapel, QI and Science Britannica) whilst watching yet another - amazing.

We were surprised to see Youtube coming up as a channel choice but this is good news for me, as I often use the Choirparts channel to learn tricky pieces of choral works. Plus of course I shall now be able to play Peppa Pig videos ad nauseum to mt granddaughter. I think my daughter's family are going to be very happy when they next come to stay.

The iplayer for all channels works better with the humax than it does on my computer, because it is more powerful. I no longer get buffering and jumping pictures when I watch itvplayer, 4OD etc. BBC was the only one that worked ok before, basically because their servers and programme are better to start with! The buttons are easy to use on the remote, I like the two minute jump.

I don't think we had realised how much we missed being able to record things on our video player, then being able to watch at times that suited us, and pause when MIL invariably phones in the middle of a favourite programme to say 'Oh, you don't watch THAT do you?'.

My overall impression when the box arrived was that it looked very stylish and would fit in with the other gadgets under my TV in the lounge.

It was connected by the engineer (as I already had a dish) and he explained how to operate it.

Myself/ DH and Son find it easy to operate and scroll round the tv guide.
One comment regarding the tv guide is that it could be made a lot clearer which are the HD channels.

But so-far we find all the features (record/rewind/pause) very useful.
