Dog Lovers! Which is your fav breed ?

Border Terriers here. Our present one "Dottie" is 15 and although hale and hearty we will get to the day where we have to do the final kindness. Our first "Bobbin" we lost at 16 when on Easter Monday of the first "lock down" she couldn't balance and walk. Vet felt it was a brain tumour and so we had to say goodbye. The vet pts and allowed us o hold her . First time l had seen my husband cry. When Dottie's time comes we won't have another puppy ( we are 70 ) but l would like to take on an elderly border . l do agree that borders don't have owners they have "staff"

Anther vote for the German shepherd. I have a 9yr old and an almost 7 year old puppy (no, that's not a typo).
Two vastly differing personalities but both smart, life loving, endearing furballs.

It is so easy to imagine the worst - sadly it happens all too often- but I bet you were a happy mum all the way home!

In common with many vets, if a dog is really poorly or is being PTS, our vet displays a lit candle on the reception desk with a sign to say that someone is having to face a hard decision at the moment and to respect what they are going through. The atmosphere tends be be very subdued when people realise. The usual chatter is invariably absent when we all remember those moments in the past and give our pets an extra cuddle .
The owner also has the option to stay with their pet as long as they like and then leave quietly and privately through the back (staff) entrance

Our first family dog was an Alsation, she was the friendliest, loveliest pet. When we married and had children, we had two rough collies, who had lovely sweet natures, and great with the children.
When they passed, we decided no more dogs! But a little yorkie/pomeranian was given to us, and has been in our family for 12 years now. He's very small, a bit snappy, and not as sweet natured as the larger dogs, but still as lovable in his own way.

My much loved shichi Rudi. His mum was a chihuahua and his dad a shihtzu. He’s like a miniature shihtzu. Wonderful little dog and so good with children. my grandsons adore him 🥰

GSD for me. We have had 4 and they are the most loyal companions. Our current one is a 40kg bitch who is a big softie at home but hyper vigilant outside.

Hearing about so many wonderful dogs here, and wee sad stories too , but is has to be pot luck rescue dogs for me. Giving them another chance.

I'm really more of a cat lady (got 4) but if I had a dog - a standard poodle.

So pleased to hear that! I was at the vets with our dog this morning.
Amongst all the lively dogs, a woman came in carrying a dog lying quietly in her arms, looking really miserable.
I was called in just after she arrived, but I hope it might have been like your experience WWM2.

That's good to hear Whitewavemark2. I've done exactly the same with one of our BTs, it was a false call and we had him for another 2 years by which time he was really very old.

I am extremely embarrassed to report (and as pleased as punch) that Duncan’s heart is fine. It is simply an old man’s cough, and his fainting fits which happened in the summer are at the moment a mystery. But the vet says as he is at the moment and with luck set to live 2-3 more years 👍👍👍👍

So thank you all for your kind wishes and a huge sorry for making such a fuss over what has wonderfully proved to be nothing. 😳🥳

Off to the vets at 10.30 🤞🤞.

The point is really that he is in his 14th year and of course we must face up to the fact that, like us he is nearer the end of his life than the beginning.

Still hard though.

I loved my SiL's lurcher Pippa. She was a one off and very affectionate.
I also love this Chow Chow, my granddoggy, even though he can be stubborn he is very caring.

I’ve only lived a couple of my 73 years without sharing my home with dogs. They have been mostly cross breed rescues but my current two are a blue roan cocker spaniel who joined us aged 10 months and a huge 2 year old lab. I decided against rescue because four young grandchildren meant temperament was key. I was ‘recommended’ by trainer friends to the breeders, both bred for temperament as well as show quality.

The young lab has been a challenge - over large, over friendly (unless you’re a yappy jack Russell) over enthusiastic, in all a big daft lad who is a late maturer 🐕
The blue roan is typical, sweet natured, loves everybody, kind and gentle 🐶

Cocker spaniels ( not golden cockers though as I wouldn't want to risk the heartbreak of "cocker rage"). And black or chocolate labradors.German shepherds. Irish wolfhounds. Parson Russell terriers. Irish setters. Bassetts, Vislas. Cockerpoos. (sorry but how can I choose one?)
Most rescue dogs these days are "bred dogs" as fleurpepper calls them. Doesn't follow that people who pay for a pedigree puppy are less likely to give them up than someone with a mongrel puppy...

Are golden ones still temperamental? When I used to have Blue Roan cockers many golden ones were very nasty and unpredictable due to inbreeding. But people still wanted then in preference to Blue Roans. I’ve switched allegiance to Whippets now because I could never keep on top of the grooming but I still melt when I see a Cocker Spaniel puppy.

Labradors. I have a black one laying on my lap right now and her chocolate sister right next to me. However, I also adore Irish Wolf Hounds but I've never owned one. I also like German Shepherds.

I’ve had 3 labs , chocolate. Black and now a fox red , whose one today and is sitting on my feet

I've always loved greyhounds and got my girl in May 2020 aged 5 and a half. I'd just retired due to covid, wouldn't want to have had one when working full time. She is so gentle and affectionate with everyone, sleeps a LOT, but is so good on walks and in the house, considering her life in racing kennels.

Rottweiler, Boxer and Bulldog. Had all and hard to choose but something very special about a Rottie. They have an almost human sense of humour.
