Birds nest in the middle of hedges. Trimming the hedge won't bother them.

Frank, ....(deep breath) Cutting hedges is not a criminal offence. It is however, something us funny old hippies (members of the RSPB in our case) try desperately to stop people from doing in spring and early summer. I think its pretty much accepted that many of the birds that were oh so common when we were children are having huge problems nowadays. Most enviromentaly friendly folks try not to cut hedges during the classic breeding season.

The sparrows near us nest in the specially designed RSPB house martin nests attached under our eaves . Before we put those up we never saw any sparrows in the garden, in spite of numerous hedges.

However, I agree that it's best not to trim shrubs during the nesting season.

In winter Andie may be near the fire to keep warm and I can go in and out of the room.
As soon as I get something like a screwdriver or a drill he is following me.
In all fairness he keeps a safe distance away but his eyes move to where the tool is being used.

Well there were a lot of people trimming their hedges today and I even saw a police car go up the road when I was cutting mine and the police did not arrest or say anything to me.

Same difference. Sparrows etc don't know which hedges are council-owned and so tend to nest anywhere they fancy. I'd hate to think of all those little feathered baby birds being abandoned to due of hunger because their mummies and daddies have been scared off.

I doubt whether Frank was out cutting all the hedgerows! The council usually does that.

Well as some birds nest all through the summer, the hedge could get a bit out of hand!

Hedges should not be cut whilst birds are nesting!

He's obviously a lovely, loyal dog and he just feels he needs to keep an eye on you! Our dog also likes to keep us in her sights and hates not knowing what is going on!
