It just sounds wrong to me when they say " my competitors" meaning everyone else in a race or event.

An adversary is somebody you play against , compete with (literally)
A fellow-competitor is somebody who is in the same competition (or race) in which you are also a competitor
So in boxing or fencing, you face an adversary but the people lining up with you at the start of a race are fellow competitors

A competitor is anyone you compete against or who is competing against you, surely`?

So I am quite willing to accept my/his/her competitors in the sense you mention.

What is really annoying me is every time the reporter says "he/she had to settle for silver" as if that's no achievement at all!

"My fellow competitors" sounds correct.

I've been watching the Paralympics and time after time the presenters and athletes have spoken about "my/her/his competitors" about those that they are racing/playing against.
Surely they mean "competition" or "adverseries" or even "my fellow competitors".
More lazy language that has been made acceptable by TV.
