Children in shopping trollies

I am on the same page. Why is it someones concern that my child/grandchild is in the trolley? If he/she is still a baby and can't walk? And i don't have a stroller with me? Should i carry him/her in my arms and do shopping at the same time cause some stranger thinks that trolleys are filthy?

Actually, that's why you should never put your handbag on a table eg in a café!

To be honest I don’t like to see it when the children are hanging off the sides of supermarket trolleys, I’ve seen them underneath standing inside you name it ,

Don’t pick a trolley that is designed for children? There are germs everywhere!

I have one of those fold down boxes kept in the boot of the car. I open it up and put it in the trolley. The groceries go into it, not straight into the trolley. Repacked at checkout, straight into car boot and wiped down thoroughly inside and out after each use. Online shopping doesn’t solve the problem as you don’t know where the containers have been - I’ve seen some filthy ones and now that some supermarkets are not even bagging the online shop, it’s even worse.

I have put a child's shoes on for them before going shopping and not washed my hands afterwards. Then picked up items in a supermarket, presumably my shopping is then covered in faeces, sperm and whatever else has been listed here.

I also let children into my house wearing shoes, it is surprising I have not died from all those germs on my carpet.

Grannygear, I think people are talking about children sitting/standing in the main body of the trolly not sitting in the seat designed for them.

I must say this thread puzzles me. Most supermarkets have some trolleys with a child seat. I can't see anything wrong with that. Easier and safer than having a toddler running wild in the aisle. Do you complain about kids sitting in a seat on a bus/a bench in the park/swings etc in case they pee or spit on them?

I not in the slightest bit worried about the dirt but I’ve been to too many injuries caused by children falling out, head injuries are the most frequent, some serious ones, last week it was a dislocated shoulder. I taught all my children to hold on the side of the trolly and walk sensibly. It was an up hill struggle sometimes but we got there.

Regrettably not. But Waitrose probably have a better class of germs than Tesco or Aldi.

Most supermarkets have those shallower, raised trollies with no child seats - why not just use those if concerned? You can still get loads in them - and much easier on the back!

Even before the pandemic DH and I cleaned the trolley before commencing the shopping.
I wondered if we live in apart of the country where people are particularly ignorant or whether this is now a nationwide failing by parents.
Just to be clear we are talking about sitting in the part of the trolley where the foodstuff is placed, not the seat that is provided for a toddler.

I agree with Hithere. Taking young children food shopping is not easy and in some cases would be impossible if you didn't put young children in the trolley. You can't always leave a young child with someone else when you need to shop. Personally I can't see the problem with children in trollies and considering this is Gransnet I have been very surprised to see such negative opinions on this topic, whereas I would have expected grans to be supporting mums and saying thank you for things that are done to help and assist those with young children. The supermarkets are supporting childcare by providing child friendly trollies. Supermarkets by me all now have cleaning spray and cloths at the entrance so you can clean your trolley before you shop.
I find the child in a trolley seat very useful for putting my shopping list on or delicate shopping I don't want to squash when I am shopping on my own without a small grandchild sitting in the seat. So I say thank you for trollies with child seats and well done for parents using them rather than allowing their children to run all round the store bumping into people.

I have to say this thread has given me a good laugh. The obsession with cleanliness is the reason so many people/children suffer with allergies and eczema. We need dirt to build up our immune system. Just wash ya hands....simple. Stop moaning about everything..

I do think children sitting in trolleys are probably less of a hazard in many ways than if they're running round unchecked, when they could easily have someone frail knocked over.
No, it's not nice to think of the bacteria they may leave in the trolley but I'm pretty sure the handles - outside of the Covid times - carry the same bacteria. Food you put inside the trolley is wrapped or bagged usually, whereas the bacteria on the handle will be transferred to your hands.

Well I asked my WR delivery driver this morning and in this area our orders are not made up in shops but in a distribution centre about 10 mikes away. I’m not sure where this leaves me but any way, I’m not going back to shopping in store. ?

What are supermarkets doing about this. ?
During Covid my local Tesco and Morrisons have uniformed staff at each entrance ensuring customers are wearing masks and using hand & trolly handle disinfecting proceedures Why then cannot these staff advise /tell their customers DO NOT put a child in your shopping trolley.?
Accidents do happen and be 'sure the first to complain would be 'mummy herself 'should her child injure himself in one of these trolley's.
I have seen a child standing up in one, while mummy is 'oblivious' to the fact, as she is far to engaged in a chat with another customer.

I don't know if any of you have noticed but there are pictures on trollies telling people not to put children inside the main carrier anyway (or stand on the end or sides like in the 70s). I suppose it is because if anyone is injured, they cannot make a claim...

I think it's about the bacteria from sputum, dog wee and dog poo transferring from children's noses, shoes etc, and getting on to other people's food, Mogsmaw, not the danger of children falling out on to their heads.

Perhaps trolleys should go through a trolley dip, rather like a sheep dip, after every use.
That would sort it!
