Speculation: Who Will Be In Burnham's Cabinet?

But the Guardian is jumping the gun a bit - Burnham's prospective appointment isn't a Done Deal just yet!

However, I personally don't care too much who gets the job providing they banish the despicable Rachel Reeves to the back benches.

That'll do me!

I hope Angela Rayner isn't invited back although it's probably inevitable. I'd like to see John Healey persuaded back into the defence role. I'd also like to see Milliband moved somewhere as imo he's causing damage to people and our way of life, too much of a fanatic. Darren Jones seems a very safe pair of hands and has a great deal of experience in the treasury so maybe the chancellor role. Don't think Cooper has been much use in the foreign office but what do I know! I'd make Streeting return to Health as from what I see locally he's only made things much worse but Milliband might fit there.
I'm going to be puzzling over this all day now!!

He hasn't won yet. There might be a surprise entrant to the race yet. If he sacks Rachel I'll be happy.

Me too. At PMQ's this morning, Reeves looked like a turkey who has just turned over the calendar and found December.

I have no idea. I’m happy to wait and see who becomes PM, then wait and see who they bring in and swap out of the cabinet.

It’s all getting a little weary and I never thought I’d say that!

Geordiegirl1 Wed 24-Jun-26 13:56:57

Yes to Ed Millibae but not Streeting!

It's interesting that with some 400 Labour MPs they have to choose someone from outside the Commons as leader and PM. Where is the talent of yesteryear?

In older people's imaginations, I think. Where it always seems to be.

I don't think the 'talent' was necessarily lauded when they were in office...

All a fix!

How?

It’s a high bar to actually get in the ballot paper so not very likely imo. And of course RR will go.

I think nanna8 is right about KS making a mistake in having RR as Chancellor. Those early errors spelled doom from the start. So disappointing.
Now, who will it be? Wes Streeting?

I hope he keeps some with experience. My predictions to definitely remain in top cabinet roles are Miliband and Mahmoud, I think Yvette Cooper will go, which I’m sad about, and Reeves will be demoted. I’d like to see John Healey return, and I hope Pat McFadden stays where he is.

Mamie Wed 24-Jun-26 12:06:34

Just reading that James Purnell will be Chief of Staff. Very experienced and a safe pair of hands I would think.

I read somewhere that Miatta Fahnbulleh is talking to Burnham about economic policy. She has a PhD in economics, has worked at various think tanks, could be plausible as chancellor.

She looks better than the neoliberal alternatives...

Fahnbulleh is on the cusp of taking a key role in shaping his economic policy.

From a basic income for all to a free energy allowance for households, wealth taxes and widespread nationalisations, her proposals would represent a radical change for the British economy.

She won't get chancellor, of course. Much too scary... grin

Miliband
Raynor
Cooper

oh what talent!!

MaizieD Wed 24-Jun-26 10:06:36

I would like to see Ed Miliband (sic)...

Oops blush

Mamie Wed 24-Jun-26 09:57:10

I would like to see Ed Miliband (sic) continue in his current post. I hope Darren Jones has a senior role.
At least we should lose the posts writing about Kier. 😱
One hopes they will manage to spell Andy correctly.

MaizieD Wed 24-Jun-26 09:50:21

Shabanna Mahmood may have been a good Justice Minister but her Immigration Bill proposals are appalling and I'm surprised that Burnham appears to support them. If she's going to be in his cabinet she needs to be somewhere where she will be less divisive.

MaizieD Wed 24-Jun-26 09:45:47

nanna8

Wes Streeting
Millipede Oops Milibrand
Angela Rayner ?
Yvette Cooper
Shabana Mahmood
Plus a few of his mates. I wonder who will be Chancellor, hopefully someone a little more skilled ? If Starmer had had a better Chancellor maybe he wouldn’t have been forced to resign. He never could read the room.

Oh, FGS, you can't lay off the juvenile name calling for an instant, can you? First Starmer, now Milliband.

Ed Milliband is a good hardworking and effective minister who has dome nothing to justify such hostility.

If we start a thread on incompetent MP's we are in for a very long day. grin

Yes I did think that as I posted . But felt the need to make the point that every Cabinet has incompetents. Point taken -interesting to think who I’d like to see. I hope he keeps not only some of the same people but I’d like to see some kept in same posts eg Home Secretary

Re: Home Secretary. I have a GD who works for the Ministry for Justice and she really liked Shabana Mahmood when she was Justice Minister. Unlike Dominic Raab who would throw his lunch at anyone who said something he didn't agree with.

MawsRosie Wed 24-Jun-26 07:42:20

Hear,hear.
Somehow I missed the waving palms , the donkey and cries of Hosanna!when he arrived in London from the outer wilderness, oops, I meant Manchester.

As for RR, it’s evitable that there will be a new Chancellor. A crucial appointment whose main strength should be the ability to challenge the Treasury’s orthodoxy successfully
