What do upu mean please ronib

ronib Fri 26-Jun-26 09:31:30

Burnham’s senior economic adviser is apparently advising against a wealth tax. I hope Burnham listens. More tax will be lost than paid.

Could Mr Burnham restore Labour?

Theoretically, yes. Realistically, I don't think so.

I believe we are at the point now where the nation is so divided and deeply entrenched in their division that it will be all but impossible for ANY party to govern effectively regardless of who leads it.

Austerity and then the Referendum were the catalysts; Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, and Keir Starmer, all thought they had the 'answer'... Burnham will be faced with the same problems under the same structure.

The benefits of any real change could take many years to become a reality whilst the disadvantages of such changes would be immediately obvious. That doesn't work well for any party or its leader in the short space of time they have to 'turn things around'.

I am so glad that was taken in the spirit with which it was intended. After I posted I thought what if they think I actually mean that grin

The OP wrote the above Cossy in green at the start of the thread which is what I’m replying to.

It's like rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. One thing I hope Burnham does is to sack Rachel Reeves. One of the worst Chancellors we have ever had.

My thoughts and feeling entirely.

The thread subject is ‘Could Mr Burnham restore Labour’
A good question and my answer is, I sure hope so as if he can’t then nobody can.
He has three years to turn things around.

Unless I’ve gone completely bonkers this thread is “he’s done it!! The toolmakers son has retired”

David did indeed post something quite controversial on this very thread! That’s his prerogative, however he should expect to be challenged, as anyone of us would be.

David49 please do point it out if it happens again.
Some of us (arguably most) don't like to see nasty posts, whoever they are directed at.

Yes please, most of us wouldn’t be deliberately nasty to any other posters.

Willow3 my uncles secretary of the communist party and wrote for the Morning Star! I gave up my allegiance when I went on a school trip to Russia in 1966, a real eye opener but I loved it when I went shopping with my mum and told her “there’s one of my comrades!” 😄

Susieq that must have been quite something, a school trip there. Instead, we were brought up with Daily Workers, Soviet Weekly and Soviet Monthly lying around.

My family split in the end.
When the Communist Party split and I arrived at University the branch there was very intellectual very lively and "Eurocommunists" branch - I went with them, (did lots of study to find out about the history of communism and principles and philosophically where it came from in the 19c). We basically all left the CP in the end.

But my Father Mum and nearest Sis with the remaining group (like your uncle) My much younger sis and bro never got involved.

Doesn't Alexei Sayle just make you hoot with his family tales of being in a communist family? so accurate, so funny.

But there is one thing worth mentioning generally, which is when occasionally posters accuse someone left Labour or whoever of being Communist it's just totally inaccurate

Communism involves for example no one owning any property or any businesses or land at all, it's all owned by the state, or by communal entities, no private anything (schools etc). In theory everyone get paid according to their needs not any position in society. Corbyn is not a Communist.

And although Russia ended in the way it did, as we know, because "people will be people" and the idealism was never to be - given any objector was put in prison or worse - there was a good social welfare system in place, which is why some when the system collapsed were left without the means to live and eat properly - its unlikely they wanted a Putin really years and years later, or the gross rich.

It’s unfair to refer to any other threads, on this thread there are no provoking or controversial posts by David49 so maybe stop the pile on now.

Good message, but hmm compared with recent events . . .

Seriously, I am accused of being a misogynist several times a week by the feminists on GN, I've been called worse and am not especially bothered but you can expect a come back.l

Where are these accusing posts, David, because I’ll be blowed if I’ve seen it happening with such frequency on the N & P threads.

This claim, though, reminds me strangely of the Farage claim of being more subject to attack than other politicians which is being discussed elsewhere. It has the same ultra hyperbolic feel…

I seem to recall that when I called you out for misogyny I got deleted hmm

I can't say I've seen you being accused of being a woman hater, David. I have seen you regularly being very dismissive of young people, of education beyond what you see as necessary for the benefit of employers, and make old-fashioned comments about women on a female-dominated forum. IMO, posters are usually very patient with you.

I would boldly suggest that if anyone continually and quite deliberately posts controversial posts and opinions, as you happily admit you do David, and then to accuse those who challenge you of being “misandrists”.

I don’t think you’re a woman hater, nor do I think anyone in here is a man hater.

However, if you will insist of posting your outdated and sexist remarks about professional woman, what on earth do you expect from us?

Many many women on this site, and in real life, did/do extremely high level jobs in business and within parliament there are/ have been some extremely competent, highly educated, great female politicians.

We represent approx 50% of our population, so it’s not unreasonable to expect this representation within business, the public sector and parliament.

I cannot take you seriously when you make ridiculous and unfounded comments, most of us have moved on from Victorian times.

👏👏 I agree Cossy.

David49 I do hope you come back to explain to us the reasons you particularly don't like the idea that more women in politics and business would improve society. Plus if any posters respond and you feel their response comes from a place of misandry you highlight and similarly explain your reasons why you deem such responses misandrist. You say it happens.

You say I am accused of being a woman hater several times every week if I dare to criticize a woman but thats pretty frequent and I have not seen evidence of that......
