Thanks TheatreLover.
It must have been uncomfortable to have your MP unfairly demonised by the media for 2 years, particularly when he’s well thought of by his constituents.

Starmer may resign
(181 Posts)Tomorrow apparently.
Can people list the things he has done that people have liked about him please?
Personally, I think he will be a Leader who I will soon forget.
I understand he may be a nice person.
Though personally I think he did far too much of "standing by people". He stood by everyone until he couldnt do it any longer.
He did do well about foreign wars.
That is very well stated Luckygirl. I've signed the petition and emailed my local MP.

I hope Starmer and Burnham will give a joint statement tomorrow saying Starmer will continue to do the PM job in the interest of stability and continuity for the country. Burnham will be his assistant. In my view there is nothing to be gained in changing prime ministers yet again. The media would be disappointed but there you go!!
I agree Silvergirl.
However, I don’t think Burnham’s the type who will be happy as an assistant … far too full of himself and his own importance for that.
Remember he’s the self styled ‘King of the North’!
Didn't Harold Wilson foster the picture of being a pipe and a pint of beer man when in fact he preferred a cigar and brandy? Nothing new in politics and in fact who cares.
I think Boris Johnson deliberately rumpled his hair to look a bit chaotic although of course he didnt really need much extra help in that score.

There’s no way that Burnham will do that. He’s already taking about what he intends to do as PM as if it’s a foregone conclusion. He’s so convinced that everybody loves him that I think he’s in for a shock when he realises how many people don’t. Wherever people are on the political spectrum I think a lot of the electorate think that something rather shabby has just taken place. Which it has.
Hear, hear MayBee 👏👏👏
One of the only good things about all this is that my MP is supporting Keir. As someone who obviously knows him quite well she recently described him as ‘kind’. Not a word that is usually bandied around in politics is it. But heaven forbid that we should have a PM ‘lacking in charisma’ ( although I struggle to think of many PM’s that have had charisma) but is ‘kind’ too. How boring

I think the premature departure of Starmer will be a grave mistake. Before we know where we are Burnham will be found to have committed some misdemeanour in the past or he will make an unpopular decision and it will start all over again. Bet you.
Remember when we all said that after years of Tory shenanigans we wanted honesty and we didn’t mind boring. Oh yes we did.
I have to agree.
Well said MayBee70, I think Rachel Reeves should have gone ages ago and Yvette Cooper.. Keep carrying on Starmer!

Well said Cossy & winterwhite. Whilst the speculation and potential leadership battle continues, the government will be in a state of inactivity with running the country. They will all be in a state of frenzy over who should they back and how to retain their position in the government. Then newbies and shuffles will all have to learn their new roles. No wonder governments can't embed good policies and practice. There's no time. Still it's popular with football managers! Maybe don't be surprised when Burnham doesn't live up to the rapid overhaul that is expected by many. Wasn't anything learnt from the Tory circus?
Clearly nothing at all was learned from the Tory musical chairs of PMs.
Our governments and political parties, all of them, are beginning to feel and look like some horrendous real life TV reality show!
Agreed Cossy. It’s sickening isn’t it!
He is a very kind man unlike the bullying media which has been hounding him from the beginning. I think part of his problem is he is too polite with the media and they see it as weakness. It was similar with Gordon Brown. I hope Burnham is better at standing up to the rudeness of the reporters. The Daily Mail has been commenting on his "maboobs" already. Call themselves professional journalists. That's a laugh.
I think I’m going to find tomorrow the saddest day of all the decades I’ve followed politics and supported the Labour Party
. The thought of Trump Badenoch and Farage ( probably Putin too along with a lot of the media that have created the narrative of all this) gleefully watching our PM resign when imo he has done nothing to warrant it. I’ll support my lovely MP but will resign my membership. Apart from that I’m done with politics and feel as thoughI’ve wasted a huge chunk of my life seeing it all come to this. The economy was stabilising, we were repairing our relationship with Europe; immigration was slowly getting (because it was never going to be a quick fix) under control. And when Trump goes everything will improve dramatically. And Burnham will get the credit.
Yes I agree Maybee.

Indeed.
He has been hounded out for no sound reason at all.

Utterly!

I couldn’t agree more, well said and very sad 😢
Well said MayBee.
Apparently my MP is one of the back stabbing bas***ds calling for KS to resign - just discovered this info.
He’ll be getting a shitty email from me tomorrow, along with my LP membership resignation. I’ve supported him for 15 years - never again!
Best scenario is that Starmer steps down and is made foreign secretary. I truly think he would be an asset there and he is comfortable dealing with other leaders. If he clings on all hell will be let loose plus, looking at him, it would be very bad for his health.
I may wait to see if there's a leadership election so I can vote against Burnham. I think Darren Jones said he would stand? But I'm certainly not going to continue financing the party. Anyway, if Burnham thinks of himself as The King in the North look what happened to Jon Snow in GOT's; banished beyond the wall...
Do you think there’ll be a leadership election though MayBee?
I seems like they (whoever they are) are trying to hand it to Burnham on a plate, without an election.
If there’s going to be a leadership election, does KS really need to resign? He could fight the election.
I think this would be preferable … even if Burnham won. He would have the clear mandate of the LP membership rather than being a PM that nobody has voted for.
To bypass the leadership electoral process is very disrespectful to the grass roots members i.e. you and me!
I’ll wait and see what happens - if there is an election, I want to be able to vote.
I think it's totally unacceptable for Burnham to become PM without some sort of election. If another party did it Labour would be complaining about it. I mean, no one even knows what his policies are because he wasn't even an MP. And surely he's got to continue with the manifesto that the electorate voted for?

The media has a lot to answer for. They are dictating our politics.
Do you really think that the hundreds of Labour backbenchers who want him to resign, and members of his own Cabinet too are only influenced by the media?
KS has found out the hard way that being PM isn’t the easy ride he thought it would be and may now have some sympathy for those other PM’s who have been forced to resign.
It’s all a long way from the celebrations of 2 years ago when he entered Number Ten.
A lot of us had high hopes that Labour were in power and would do well, but the doubts soon set in for me and many others, not about the Party but about KS as PM.
I do indeed think they are influenced by the media which they know influences their constituents who are their lifeblood.
KS has found out the hard way that being PM isn’t the easy ride he thought it would be ... I am sure KS is far too intelligent to have imagined an easy ride.
