He said he’ll keep the triple lock if he wins the next stage.

It wasn't the eyelash/T shirt comment that was the problem it was how she spoke ab out Philippson in my view....mean girl attitude.

Badenoch raised some laughter on her own benches with the eyelash/T shirt comment but it was Starmer that got the biggest laughs. Badenoch attracted quite a bit a jeering and a direct reprimand from the Speaker after Badenoch referred to the Education secretary quite personally and meanly I thought. Hoyle then looked Badenoch straight in the eye and told her to be careful with her language and show some respect and decorum.

After PMQs Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, said that Kemi Badenoch lost her head at PMQs:
“ Kemi lost her head at PMQs - and afterwards too. It’s not the first time. She’s compared me to a Gestapo officer. I wonder what it is about a working class woman driving record investment in state schools by ending private schools’ tax breaks that the Tories hate so much."

Phillipson also posted this on social media:
“3,008 more teachers in secondaries & special schools
1,646 more teachers in colleges
Trainee teachers up 13%
Teacher pay up 9.5%
Record investment in schools
If standing up for state schools makes me a spiteful class warrior, I’ll wear it with pride.

Starmer I thought was strong today in what was always going to be a difficult PMQs for him. So there was no need for Badenoch to be disrespectful.

Lizziedrip it’s both appalling and hilarious at the same time! grin

Casdon Wed 24-Jun-26 17:44:58

You don’t see his immediate reaction on camera. I doubt if he will lodge a complaint, he’ll see it as just part of their usual PMQ banter.

Casdon

Yes she did.

Wow!

Just imagine if a male MP (leader of a party)
had made a similar comment about a female MP!

Of course he will Oreo, he just has to flutter his eyelashes…

Hahahaha

Chestnut Wed 24-Jun-26 17:33:29

All is not lost. I hear Al Carns is approaching on the left flank, which sounds promising. He might stand against Burnham.

*ronib*, cuts in staffing have been going on seriously for at least 8 years!
Changed contracts from permanent to temporary, at least 15 years ago, ie only pay 9 months of the year, less tutors per student: Last year and the year before we had local strikes because of the cuts.
The main changes in the more flush universities are less income from International Students because of Brexit

Where have you been all this time?

I’d say even longer than 8 years. The reduction in foreign student due to massively increased fees had an impact but so did the increase in home students fees. When my son attended University, in 2006, his fees were kept at 1,500 per year (his original place was offered in 2004 and he deferred) when daughter started in 2015 they had risen to £9,000.

In addition, my understanding, is there’s been a decrease in courses too.

Didn’t watch PMQs (can’t be bothered with the ridiculous theatre of it) … did Badenoch actually make that comment about eyelashes and t-shirts?

Tuliptree Wed 24-Jun-26 17:11:07

Incredibly dangerous to think any political leader has no problems at all. An utter impossibility . They are all flawed - it’s just a question of how much.

Casdon Wed 24-Jun-26 17:10:27

I listened to PMQs and thought he did well actually.
Wish it had always been so.

I expect he feels released from the straitjacket of office - like I did once when I handed my notice in and my husband did when he took early retirement!
That amazing "summer vacation" feeling.

I hope he has a few weeks of joy now!
🤸‍♀️🕺🏼

I agree NotSpaghetti.

I too have experienced that feeling of walking away from a job that was weighing me down like a millstone. It is literally as though a weight has been lifted from your shoulders.

I hope KS feels that same relief. He tried his best; it wasn’t enough for the PLP; let them get on with it now.

Burnham’s going to need more than eyelashes and black t-shirts to succeed in today’s febrile environment.

Enjoy the summer Sir Keir … Burnham’s got what he wanted; it’s his problem now.

Galaxy

I have quite a bit of time for her, but her problem is her links to the previous government, but there is very little she can do about that.

Her problems are more than her links to the previous government.

I don’t think she has any problems at all actually, but has made the role her own over this last year.
KS certainly is made to bluster and flustered around her, don’t know if AB will fare better, hope so.

Slight diversion back to the theme of the post, but this did make me laugh.
Badenoch just addressed Starmer at PMQ, and commented that he’d been abandoned by his party ‘

And what for? A pair of eyelashes and a black T-shirt.’

I think that made everyone laugh😂

I think Badenoch is really finding her feet, she has greatly improved over recent months.

But I don’t like the feet she’s found. Not that that matters of course. The Speaker gave her a deserved telling off today for some of the language she used.

Badenoch no doubt realises she herself is more than the colour of her dress or the length of her eyelashes- and sufficiently self aware to realise her jest was merely jest. Who knows what's going through her mind now she will be faced with a new LP PM that may strengthen the government and perform well at PMQ? She must be aware she herself does not have good favourable ratings.

I'm sure neither Starmer or Burnham will lose much sleep over her comments- PMQs twas ever about theatre. But there is truth in her jest- AB does have long eyelashes and he does have a track record of positive engagement and high popularity ratings- just saying. Use all your talents 😊

I read that students are returning from overseas to our universities at undergrad.
