Belfast another appalling attack, we need to ask what is driving this.

An atrocious attack last evening on the streets of Belfast.

Thank God for the local resident with a hurl who with help succeeded in beating the attacker away.

What is behind these attacks, what is driving men who have risked their lives to get to our shores to then behave in this way?

Is it culture, racism, MH or drugs?

I wish to understand what is happening.

I won’t distress anybody by posting details of other successful and attempted beheadings in the UK FriedGreenTonatoes2, but horrifically, there are quite a few of those too. All I’m asking for is some balance in the way such crimes are reported, which I don’t think is unreasonable.

Home grown criminal acts happen all the time. They leave families grieving and the consequences are devastating.

When someone comes to our shores, asking for asylum and a new safe life goes on to commit a crime as horrific as this, of course it will make headlines.

FGT2 your posts are inline with what I have read on both BBC and SKY.

There has also been no discussion about the court case this week of the two teenagers in Barry who randomly stabbed and killed an Asian man who was taking his mother her shopping Kandinsky, although I posted the link to that too.

It doesn’t fit with some people’s agenda Casdon

I read that. It’s yet another stabbing, although I’m sure I read that knife crime has gone down.
Another mother deprived of her son and child deprived of father.
This time, described as racist attack.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 09-Jun-26 21:20:14

Yes the perpetrator was an asylum seeker maizieD
Granted leave to remain in 2023 for 5 years. Made his way from the Sudan to Paris and thence to Dublin apparently. Then onwards once there, to Belfast.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 09-Jun-26 21:16:55

Can we just please acknowledge that this attack wasn’t just ‘a stabbing’ (bad enough) but an attempt at a beheading?

Ye gods. Who’d have thought this would ever come to pass on the streets of England. Just stop and let that fact sink in will you.

petra I live very close to Leigh.

It has its problems like many other places.

It still has some of the best restaurants, bars and pubs in the area.

I would much rather go out in Leigh than Westcliff-On-Sea or Southend.

The media has a lot to answer for I think, it’s not unreasonable to expect proportionality of reporting about stabbings. That poor woman who was killed at the hands of her abusive partner deserves as much attention as anybody else who dies, the method was the same.

According to our neighbour - an NHS psychiatrist - Qat induced psychosis is a contributory factor - 👍☘️

Only this morning I had to avoid the spit from chewed qat on the pavement outside the post office.
It was one of the reasons my daughter moved from Leigh on sea. It was constantly outside her house and on her car.
She knew where it was coming from. She constantly asked the shop keeper where the culprits worked, nothing changed.

So qat must be another substance people chew and spit out.

I heard about paan which covers the streets of north west London apparently. A disgusting filthy mess which is very difficult to remove. I suppose chewing and spitting out all these drugs is something we have to accept because it's cultural and they are recovering from trauma.

These lads were born in the uk. Their parents came her as young children.
If you don’t know Leigh on sea you could see photos and think ^ oh, how lovely^ it’s not. It’s a cesspit of wannabes and z list celebrities.
Plus it’s known as cocaine central. As Oscar Wild said: they know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Kandinsky

I’m getting worried about going out these days. our country is full of these violent asylum seekers 😡

Is the assailant an asylum seeker? Has that been officially reported?

I’m afraid, from the evidence of Casdon’s earlier posts, you’re just as likely to be attacked by a native Brit.

Jaxjacky Tue 09-Jun-26 20:22:50

Trouble already started, it will be a long night, I fervently hope no one else is hurt, but with men wearing balaclavas already stoning a house, a bus and bins set on fire and traffic being stopped by protestors I think my hope may be in vain.
Elon Musk, of course, is stirring the pot.

Kandinsky Tue 09-Jun-26 20:18:16

Nandalot As terrible as that is, it’s a domestic crime and the perpetrator is extremely unlikely to randomly attack strangers in the street.
You can’t compare the two at all.

Nandalot Tue 09-Jun-26 20:11:52

I think what troubles me is all the division the focus on this one, truly horrifying stabbing attack is getting and the calls for protests. I just read the account in the BBC web page and on the same page is the story of a man who killed his partner by stabbing her 31 times and then setting the house on fire but there seems to be little outcry on social media about it.

Mollygo The Respresentation of the People bill, allowing 16 year olds is not law yet.

Thanks!

Maremia - My reference to ‘culturally accepted’ behaviours was with regard to qat usage and its concomitant affect on behaviour

Where do they get the Qat from? We don’t grow it here!

Where on this thread are the excuses that people are talking about? What I see is some people trying to make sense of what everybody sees as a horrendous act?

There is no sense to it!

Excuses are offered for everything now.
But if we start using the fact that people might have seen appalling things in their own country, as an excuse for their actions here, then isn’t that adding to a list of reasons to not offer people from war torn or violent countries refuge?

On a different focus;

I started reading from the beginning of the thread and having followed Casdon’s link on page 1 (thank you) I really want know, now that 16 year olds have been deemed responsible enough to vote, why their names are protected.
