Churchill to be axed from British banknotes in the name of diversity.

Figures such as Jane Austen and Winston Churchill are to be axed from our banknotes as they are apparently elitist and divisive and not fitting with our natural and cultural diversity.

It is decisions this that push people towards Reform and Restore.

When is all this nonsense going to stop?

I am also very anti Autocarrot! I am sharkist, not sharpest- I am rarely accused of being sharpest at anything 😎

Now come on Doodledog no false modesty, you're often congratulated on the accuracy, intelligence and appropriateness of your posts flowers

This seems a bit sharkist to me. Poor old basking sharks, they don’t know how sinister people think they are…

I confess to sharpest tendencies 😢. As for crocodiles, I am 100% prejudiced against the blighters.

If I ever become a politician I shall, of course, reconsider my position. 😉

Out of interest how many posters were aware of the initial survey of which category to go with? I wasn't aware of that or the subsequent vote on the decided one until it appeared on here. My feeling is it wasn't well publicised enough.

If anyone has any bank notes they object to, I will gladly take them off their hands. I understand that the £50 ones are particularly controversial. . .

Oh what are they planning for that? I'll fight you for anybody's rejects grin

How they could leave the robin off the list I'll never know. How many Christmas cards each year feature one, definitely outnumbers the numbers of salmon or basking sharks featured in any media in most people's experience.

Basking sharks are up there with crocodiles in my nightmares 😀

Chestnut Mon 08-Jun-26 00:16:31

Of all the creatures they could choose why did a basking shark get on the list? Now that really is a mystery.

Another classic British animal we omitted to mention here was the badger !! Brock didn't feature on the short list which is shocking, along with the red squirrel, robin etc. That panel must have been high on drugs or something. 🙃🥴

Given the number of people that say they never use cash, and add the numbers that wouldn't know what was the pictorial image on any banknote they do use, it seems strange these people are interested in and commenting upon what should or shouldn't be on the bank notes. 'tis a mystery....

I think it’s a lovely idea to feature wildlife. You can vote for your favourite - I’m going for hedgehogs. They are on the red endangered list now and so vulnerable. 75% of the UK population lost since the year 2000. I volunteer at a hedgehog rescue centre and you’d weep to see their injuries, especially from strimmers and lawnmowers.

Thank you, DAR

. Ten bob notes didn’t come my way all that often, but they were most decidedly brown. And old people were just as resentful of change as they prove to be now. They just didn’t have social media to amplify their views..

DaisyAnneReturns Sun 07-Jun-26 21:09:30

Oreo

I think that would be a losing bet MaizieD and I think the old ten shilling note was a shade of red.

AI begs to differ. It did become known as the "red note" but it was actually a shade of reddish-brown apparently.

So, either the redians or the brownians and both right or both wrong smile It may well be that we saw them differently - I must admit I remember them as a shade of brown.

Maremia Sun 07-Jun-26 21:06:25

Thanks Oreo and Chestnut.
I know I felt rich if I had ten shilling note but £3000! shock

Doodledog Sun 07-Jun-26 20:38:02

Yes, StoneofDestiny, I think it is serious. Strange, but serious.

StoneofDestiny Sun 07-Jun-26 20:03:11

Is this post serious? The fact an author and British prime minister are not featured on a bank note would drive people to vote for far right fascist parties?
Oh the irony. People are so supportive of Churchill's role in defeating fascism .........that they will vote to bring in supporters of fascism.

Apparently even the Queen didn't make it onto bank notes until the 1960s, Britannia on the back.

Famous people were introduced in 1970 - 71. I'm prepared to bet that lots of old people then moaned about losing Britannia. grin

MaizieD Sun 07-Jun-26 18:25:38

Even 10/- notes in perfect condition are only worth about £50. 🤣🤣🤣

Which, given the rate of inflation since they were withdrawn is probably the equivalent of what the 10/- note would have purchased way back when...

I recall them being brown rather than pink.

Chestnut Sun 07-Jun-26 16:47:07

Maremia

Who remembers the pink ten shilling notes?
Cannot remember who or what was on them.

Just checked and it was of course Britannia on the back.

Someone has a very tatty old ten bob note for sale on E-Bay for £3,066.70. Now that is really trying his luck! Even 10/- notes in perfect condition are only worth about £50. 🤣🤣🤣

I have not read all of this thread (sorry). However, according to today's newspaper, the majority of respondents to the poll were (a) under 30; (b) did not recognise Churchill and (c) don't use cash anyway!! So, a bit of a pointless (and expensive) exercise!. And, as previous contributors to this link have said who actually looks at what is printed on the notes? Especially these new and horrid plastic numbers.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 07-Jun-26 14:34:30

I volunteer at a foodbank. One week in four, the Citizens Advice Bureau sets up a stall to offer advice about benefits, housing, and budgeting.
They recommend using cash to our clients to help with money management.

Most shops & Supermarkets take cash Basgetti.
Our four fish & chip shops are cash only. So do I go without my fish supper because they only take cash? 🤷‍♀️

They will be registered and audited. A sole trader, not necessarily.

sundowngirl Sun 07-Jun-26 13:01:49

We give cash to our window cleaner, our cleaner and our occasional gardener.
We went to a local fete yesterday with the grandchildren and all the stalls, tombola etc took cash.
Although I pay for most things by card when out and and about, I always make sure I have cash in my bag. I don't want a cashless society any time soon
