Of course it would be more accurate to state that nearly 1,000 illegal migrants have arrived in the last three days, but why be so pedantic? When people are genuinely concerned about so many undocumented young men arriving on our shores you seem to dismiss them as seemingly you are unaffected by the continuing 'invasion'

Casdon Mon 25-May-26 12:09:36

The bank holiday weekend runs from Saturday to Monday, as I said earlier in the thread. Friday was a working day. No hairs split, just accuracy, which you know I expect. I can’t be doing with inaccurate sensationalisation of information.

You’re really splitting hairs now Casdon it’s called a Bank Holiday Weekend.

Exactly 🙄

!.000 illegal migrants arrived this weekend.

Do you mean 1,000 eazybee?

Madness isn’t it? They are arriving at 2 and 3 in the morning now! Wait until we see what the total is today.

This figure is not correct. 287 arrived on Saturday, and 231 arrived yesterday according to the government website, which was updated this morning. We don’t know how many there will be for today until tomorrow, assuming we are counting today as part of the weekend because it’s a bank holiday?

Plus the 394 that arrived Friday so well on the way to 1000
Quite honestly this is getting beyond ridiculous.
Many people are concerned and I can see their point most of these are young men not families and children.
Apart from France people are using small boats from Belgium

But why do people post inaccurate information Rosie51? A weekend is Saturday and Sunday! Gransnet is not a tabloid, when we aren’t stupid enough to swallow things we know aren’t true?

As I said way earlier in the thread, we will not know how this month compares to May last year until the figures are produced at the beginning of June. That’s the point at which to exercise the muscles if there has been no improvement.

I'm shocked that people seem to think we are obliged to keep taking in more and more people from all over the world. When will it end?

Again, we have 70 million people here already and do not need any more. We have plenty of young people in the NEET group. Living on benefits should not be a choice, the choice should be education, employment or training, and if they are physically fit and don't know what else to do then a year of military service. Those young people need to be doing something. Encourage them to earn a living by doing the jobs that need doing. But don't give them the choice of doing nothing.

Couldn’t agree more….👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 All

Small parts of the UK are densely populated, for sure.

We take our share of those African women, too.

Oreo Mon 25-May-26 09:02:32

Which thousands tho? There’s always going to be those who will be disappointed.
And what about all the young women in very many other countries, particularly the African Muslim countries where things are appalling for them?
The UK is a densely populated small island which already takes in millions.

Basgetti Mon 25-May-26 08:52:56

Not all, of course not. But certainly several thousand whom I’m pretty sure would be assets to the UK. They have no legal route.

We may need legal migration but we don’t need or want illegal immigrants coming across on small boats there’s a world of difference .
We can choose who comes into the country through legal immigration.

Did you see the reports on the bbc yesterday of the dreadful restriction on young women and the erosion of their most basic rights under the Taliban regime.
How are they to apply to enter the UK legally, please? Bright, talented young people with hopes of education and professional careers.

We can’t take in all the young women living in Afghanistan it’s as simple as that.
The taliban are swine we all know that but we have already taken in thousands of Afghanis in the UK.
Personally I would rather have taken just all women in and the only men those who really did work for us but so many claimed huge extended families needed to come that the army admitted that about three times as many came here as were honestly employed by them as translaters and so on.

Sweden, often seen as a liberal country have completely changed their approach to migration.
Despite this change they have voted in a right wing coalition government.

Because they have had enough of the criminal behaviour of some of the immigrants they have allowed in there, according to a tv programme I watched a few months ago.

72 arrivals this morning so far and it’s only 8am!

Shouldn’t worry. Quick google tells me that according to ONS, on average, 1,079 foreign nationals leave the UK long-term every day. Hopefully not via routes that risk their lives.
That ought to cheer you up.

That comment is missing the point.
Foreign nationals can be from any country including EU ones and presumably includes those who leave of their own volition and those whose visas have run out, students as well as some deportations.

We are having success in breaking the gangs thanks to the NCA operatives who sometimes put their lives in danger.

Casdon my point was that if England is so less welcoming to immigrants than Scotland as claimed by Basgetti why wouldn't the message spread and immigrants go to Scotland?
Of course it's natural to want familiarity around you, I'd never suggest otherwise. I just get fed up with England being poorly compared with Scotland. I am allowed to question on what basis Basgetti made her assertion.
My borough has the largest Nepalese community outside of Aldershot. They evidently find England very welcoming.

That’s interesting, Rosie. Where are you? We have a relatively large Nepalese community here in Perth (our population isn’t huge). I would imagine the draw has been employment and again relatively affordable housing. I’m often passed by large groups of mostly young men as they cycle home from work at Inveralmond industrial estate. The only cyclists who invariably ring their bells and don’t make me jump out of my skin 😁

Basgetti Mon 25-May-26 08:22:29

Rosie51

Maybe Scotland isn't as welcoming as Basgetti claims? Perhaps ask Basgetti how she knows Scotland is more welcoming than England, and perhaps at the same time she can list where NI and Wales come in her table?

No need to be snotty. Anecdotally, having lived most of my life in England but laterally in central Scotland. The Scottish government has been more welcoming, the country needs young people. Friends and neighbours are, too. Our small city is incredibly diverse. The only time anti-immigrant protestors were trained and bussed in and were behaving in a very intimidatory manner outside of one of our two migrant hotels, they were outnumbered by locals telling them to s*d off back to where they came from (mostly towns in England if local press reports were accurate).
I have no idea about Wales and Northern Ireland because I haven’t lived there.
