There’s June July and August, good Summer weather will bring more I expect.

Oreo Thu 21-May-26 15:54:08

I don’t think it’s legal migration that bothers people, more the ones arriving in small boats as there are no end to them.
If it’s dropping and the French police finally doing the job we’re paying France for then great.

They won't even listen. It's like swimming against the tide.

Seems to be a feature. Trump was the vanguard of this current wave of populism and in his first term, mortified advisors were saying 'I don't think he listens to my briefing'.
And the worst, considering the global privations, cost to the USA and lives lost, bragging yesterday that he "didn't finish reading" the Iranian peace proposals!!?

Rosie51 Thu 21-May-26 15:42:09

MayBee70 where do your figures come from please? I clicked on the link Chestnut posted and that lists 19 boat crossings for May, which seems at odds with your figures. It would be good if the number of boats is decreasing and the despicable people traffickers were losing custom.

Because sometimes when you’re banging your head against a brick wall, all you get is a headache…
None so blind as those who will not see..

Excellent news, WWM.
MT62 can you explain who " do gooders" are?
Perhaps, as a volunteer at a foodbank, a school, and local festivals, it is me?
Am I, then, one of " these people" who " are such hypocrites"?
Could you explain why, please?

No I don’t mean people who are helping the homeless & people on low wages.
I meant people who keep saying ‘all welcome’ when there isn’t enough housing to help our homeless.
All of them had an excuse why they couldn’t take in an irregular migrant.
We have an HMO near us, apart from,’blue lights’ turning up, now again, they don’t affect my life.

Whitewavemark2

Net migration lowest since 2012.

BBC

Very good news but not what the Reform voters and anti Labour people want to hear.

sundowngirl Thu 21-May-26 14:21:42

Where do these migrants go if/when they are granted asylum or leave to remain? Are they still funded by the tax payer with free housing and benefits? Presumably going above those Brits already on the housing list .

Closing migrant hotels and barracks is completely pointless if the migrants are just going to be spread all over the country in HMOs and residential areas. It's just rearranging the deckchairs. It's Labour hoping no-one will notice how many there are by scattering them instead of placing them together in larger groups. It's an attempt to hide the true scale of the problem by deception.

I agree - it just causing concern to more of the population and more difficult to keep track of.

Twaddle- yep. That’s all they talk about around here at the moment.

Maremia Thu 21-May-26 13:21:59

Recently read that Labour has managed to close down around 40% of Tory Era migrant hotels.
Should be easy enough to check this.
Also, haven't they speeded up the process of assessing the claims?
Also, recent reports about the organisers being targeted and caught.

Wyllow3 Thu 21-May-26 13:02:51

Well I have just described such an area, M62. It's a Lib Dem stronghold in large Northern City. this one, in mostly private housing area.

I have just checked the 2026 details for my city. There are no migrants housed in hotels or ex hotels at all. They are in rented shared housing situations spread through the city.

I have checked some other Northern cities, they are the same.

It funny though when these ‘do gooders’ are asked can they take in an irregular migrant, they all have their excuses ready I
So they using these HMOs that the Labour & green voters residents don’t want & objected to.
Quite laughable as these people are such hypocrites.

Have you asked many?

LizzieDrip Thu 21-May-26 11:52:25

Yes WW … but do the facts matter to many?

And, even if they do, the next ‘scapegoat’ is already being lined up😟

Where we are, nice area, mainly older people, three HMOs have been turned down. People don’t want them. It’s parking, bins, house isn’t big enough really for nine people.

Wyllow3 Thu 21-May-26 10:12:18

Locally they are going for spread out in multi occupancy houses throughout the city not "just deprived areas". Up the road in a leafy suburb is one: I see groups in the park playing basket ball or running etc. People are OK with this generally speaking.

I doubt that very much LD.

Oreo Thu 21-May-26 09:56:47

No politicians are to be congratulated on this issue so far.

MT62 Thu 21-May-26 09:55:48

I suppose all those, for whom this mattered SO much, will be along soon to congratulate Keir Starmer and the Labour government.

😳

I wasn't aware people were supplying regular updates on Gransnet, but the full details are here:
www.migrationwatchuk.org/channel-crossings-tracker/
With the amount of money and resources being thrown at this there should be some progress, but a brief dip in numbers is rather meaningless unless it carries on all year....next year....the year after....the next 20 years.
