I watched it all, there is a summary on the page above.

He did quite a bit of challenging, more than expected.

Most significant:

Praised an Independent Judiciary. And the whole house applauded on their feet, not just the democrats. Mentioned the need for checks and balances on power

Raised climate change pretty strongly

Nato needed co-operation inc Europe not nations standing alone - he reminded the US on cooperation after 9/11.

Total need to support Ukraine (hint, hint)

Not to be inward looking.

This was one very very clever and well researched and written speech. Clear, articulate, and clever - It went down very well and he is clearly respected, it will be interesting to see what the US press make of it.

This is the problem with republicans, they always resort to negative personal comments, even referring to a 12 year old as boring! Do you personally know this youngster? If not, how do you know he is boring? Admittedly he seems polite, well mannered and unassuming, which I suppose these days equals boring. As for William, again do you know him personally? If not, how on earth do you know that he is workshy? Are you privy to his daily routine? I very much doubt it!

I'm talking about the span of a hundred years making them old men when they become king. Charles could be king for maybe 10 20 years, then William would be 50 to 60, he could reign for 40 years making Gorge at least 60 70. It's not about envy its about equality.

Hopefully before that people would have voted for a Republic.

And Trump is nearly 80.
Putin 73
Xi Jinping 72

Macron is a spring chicken!

But of course, our Monarch does not have the power that these old Presidents do, that is why our Constitutional Monarchy is such a better system

No, it would like the Irish President Catherine Connolly, a parliamentary republic. That's all.

😂😂😂

I was waiting for Ireland to be given as an example!!

Charles does one good thing and everything’s forgotten? Well not me. He’s been pretty useless until he read a few words from a script.

Before Catherine Connelly, Michael Higgins Labour

So we can have a president like Trump? I think not.

Yup, I agree ,too. Jealousy is such a curse.

How charming!
Surely we can discuss this without resorting to such language?

Or perhaps that is beyond you?

I quite agree! And attacking a child is punching down to the nth degree, absolutely pathetic. Bullies speak loudly about themselves, not others.

Mojack26 Mon 04-May-26 23:35:37

Wyllow3 who wrote his speech?

They not above politics, Kings Consent King vets legislation that affects his interests, there is lobbying MPs. Shouldn't be allowed.

He would not stand to be questioned, as they only agree before hand what questions they'll answer. So wouldn't stand up and answer straight.

As for continuity who wants three King's one after the other for next 100 years from one family. Charles Work shy William and George boring.

But maybe we should be able to vote for them?

How can they be above politics, & impartial for everyone, if they have to campaign to be elected? Or would you suggest we just get a sheet of portraits of the likely candidates & choose the ones who look how we think a Monarch should look?
& given that continuity is a huge positive feature (look at Queen Elizabeth & 15 Prime Ministers that she interacted with) how often should we elect this hypothetical voted-for Monarch?

TiggyW Mon 04-May-26 21:44:59

I loved the King’s comment during his speech where he pointed out to Trump that Americans could now be speaking French, if we Brits hadn’t helped out. I doubt Trump has ever studied history.

Oh! I have just read about the 1944 submarine bell presented to the narcissist by Charles - what a stroke of genius whoever thought of that.

I read recently that the subs bell was known as the bell-end......... priceless gift to Trump!

Loved the reference to HRH being the King of Canada too ... that was an especially fantastic dig that seemed to go right over Orange Mans head

I read recently that the subs bell was known as the bell-end.

Never heard that. 🤔

It is not a Naval expression.

It is a social media term.

I first heard it in the mid 70's within a fishing fleet community...no social media then!

It’s a slang term, but it was around pre social media. Be careful though Luckygirl3, I got it in the neck for using it on this genteel site to describe he who is now known in slang as Nacho, and stars in a pack of Top Trumps .
