Millions from U.S. are now Canadian

Canada changed their laws and now almost everyone in the US who had a grandparent or great-grandparent from Canada just found put they have Canadian citizenship too. I am wondering if this might cause an exodus.

I guess it would cause a problem if the USA decided to have a draft over Iran.

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 15:55:59

It would never come to a draft for Iran.
I doubt that many Americans would choose to go and live in Canada.
Even those who dislike Trump realise he only has a few years to go as President.

KEY POINTS
The Selective Service System plans to automatically register eligible American men between ages 18 and 26 for a U.S. military draft by the end of 2026.
The proposal would implement a requirement passed by Congress to include automatic registration for “every male citizen of the United States” between those ages.
There has not been a military draft since 1973, when U.S. involvement in the war in Vietnam was winding down.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently said President Donald Trump “keeps his options on the table” when asked about chances of a draft returning amid the Iran war.

You seem very confident in your use of bold emphasis on 'never.'

Some Amercians I am sure have chosen to go and live in Canada- I can look up the numbers if you like.

You seem to be saying that don't worry about what will happen in a few years because Trump won't be President anymore.

I ask why he is still President now?

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 18:41:30

Yes, am very confident that young men will not be drafted into the military to do anything in Iran.
It’s neither here nor there to me about numbers of Americans choosing to move to Canada so please yourself on that score.
Americans know DT won’t be President for much longer than his term.
He’s still President now because he was elected.

The data on this is unclear as no one has to declare a change of citizenship under current rules.

In 2025 24000 US citizens applied for Canadian citizenship.

At the moment there is a backlog of more that 50 000 unprocessed applictions causing a waiting list of over 10 months.

Seems not everyone can wait until Trump is no longer President.

If Trump lasts beyond November as an effective President I will be very surprised, that is what Iran is counting on. Then it depends what congress decide to do.

These kind of wars are very unpopular in the US.

More fool Trump.

Even if it did, the US would have a massive problem in that young people, quite rightly, will no longer just do as instructed without question (whether they have bone spurs or not ….. ).
What do you do with, I suspect, millions who just say no?

Macaydia Wed 29-Apr-26 06:23:52

They would go to jail I think.

Maremia Wed 29-Apr-26 06:27:57

There is no such thing as 'Trump wont" but in this instance I hope you are correct, Oreo.

I think that’s a bit more certain than the situation really supports. There’s no draft and it’s unlikely, but it’s not something anyone can confidently rule out altogether.

More to the point, if there was a draft for proseccuting an illegal war, there could be a mass temporary migration of US citizens liable for the draft to Canada, some of whom, would probably never return home.but make their lives in Canada.

Do you think Canada is making a push to take over the US, rather as the US wants to take over Greenland?

I think this will have major implications.
In what way I do not know.

But I dont think the issue will turn out to be anything to do with the Iran war.

No. Some states might want to though
