I can remember The Appleyards, the first soap and whirligig. I remember the late Queen‘s Coronation seen on a 9“ rented Television and spent the day trying to fathom how the people got inside the box.

Happy days.

What early memories do you have?

Parents didn't have a tv until I was 12 and then it was black and white. Indeed hadnt experienced any colour tv until 1972 and that was only due to DH having a friend with electrical shop so we got quite a discount. I do remember watching the Queen's coronation along with half the street on neighbours' b&w tv.

My earliest memory is the wedding of Grace Kelly to Prince Ranier of Monaco. We didn't have a television but a group of little girls were invited to a neighbours house. Her mother served us biscuits and coffee which I thought was very sophisticated.

I remember the Coronation too. Also Andy Pandy and Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men.

Yes! Overthemoongran, I remember Fury! I am so glad to find another person who does too.
Another program I used to love at Children's hour was called "The Thomson Family ". Anyone else remember that? I can still even remember the theme tune.

We had a b&w tv- rented and you had to put coins in the box on back of it- i was about four or five so 1967 or 1968- then we moved away so didnt have a set for awhile, but moved back early 70's & got another b&w rental (paid weekly) we still had no coloured tv till my older brother gave my mum his old one, very late 70's.Used to watch black beauty,(horse)&tales of the riverbank, how its made, watch with mother etc when younger, then sitcoms& Top Of The Pops when late 70's.and Dr who, and Starsky&Hutch, and oppertunity knocks and sit- coms & coronation st,&carry on films when older in late teens./18 plus.

Muffin the Mule was a must-see for me (on Sunday afternoons, if I remember rightly?) when I was a kid. And I can still hear Grandma Grove complaining “I’m faint for lack o’ nourishment!”, the last word being pronounced noorishment, with the ‘ment’ stressed.

ViceVersa, i was remembering the public information films the other week, and telling one of my sons about them while he laughed how stuff has changed..Yes they did used to put the scares on kids to make them take notice, there was the one about near the river, and it showed the Grim Reaper i think🤔😟And one about stranger danger- there was a more cartoony version with a small boy& charlie his cat,& the cat did a lot of meowing and then the boy translated what Charlie says about being careful near the roads or not to go off with strangers etc. Can't remember the small boys name though🤔

Nannan2 Fri 24-Apr-26 15:18:10

My husband was involved with the Navy members lining the route of the Coronation, viewed on a small b/w t.v. We had my husband's 100 yr old Grandfather in to watch, he kept looking behind the t.v. set to see where everyone was!!

Notagranny44 Fri 24-Apr-26 15:33:17

We didn't have a TV until the Coronation in 1953, but before that, perhaps about 1951, I used to go to watch my friend's across the road and we used to LOVE "Renfrew of the Royal Mounties"! Does anyone else remember it? Renfrew had a sidekick called Kelly and we used to play out on the street for hours, slapping our rumps/horses and shooting our pretend guns. No gender stereotypes there!
I also remember a cartoon about a Penguin family that I liked, and later The Grove Family and the Appleyards, Muffin the Mule, Andy Pandy etc.

Jennifer and the Flower fairies

Children of the New Forest

Black Tulip

Black Beauty

Ivanhoe

Olive oil and popeye

The Lone Ranger

I remember we often acted out the New Forest children in a local wood. Making camps etc.

I liked it best when we were at my aunts and was allowed to watch grown up programmes. Quartermaster and the pit, A for Andromeda, little Red Monkey, the Mystery of PlanetX, Tales of the Unexpected all came to mind.

Ivanhoe was Roger Moore, and his squire was Robert Brown, James Bond's M (the one before Judi Dench?)

I was five when our first TV was delivered. It was 1957 and my mum got me out of bed to see it. The David Nixon Magic Show was on and he had a tiny ballerina running across his desk. I truly believed it was magic.

Brighousejim Fri 24-Apr-26 17:20:06

The first to I saw was for the late Queens coronation, my Gran rented a small to, we sat in the dark and as we lived on a bus route the picture became a snow storm when a bus went passed

Brighousejim Fri 24-Apr-26 17:26:32

The fist TV I saw was for the late Queens coronation, my gran rented one from radio rentals, as we lived on a bus route the screen became a snow storm when a bus went passed the house!

The Queen;s coronation in 1953. Dad hired a TV from Radio Rentals. He thought it was too risky to buy a set in case the "tube"broke which would have cost a fortune to replace. I remember all the family, uncles and aunties and the neighbours huddled together in front of the small screen in our living room with the curtains closed. We had flags and bunting decorating the outside of our house...... ironic really as I turned out to be very much a republican

mae13 Fri 24-Apr-26 18:28:00

1958-ish. "Watch With Mother", "Bill & Ben", "Rag, Tag and Bobtail" in stunning black and white and grey.

Until one of those clunky glass valves in the back of our Pete'o'Scott telly (with the 16" screen) went pop and that meant Dad had to phone the repairman from the telephone in his office - we didn't have the luxury of one at home - and then the TV would vanish to the workshop for a whole week......

So we were relegated to the radio and the Home Service until it's return.

ViceVersa

This thread has reminded me of the public information films of out youth - which were obviously designed to put the fear of god into us! I particularly remember the 'Lonely Water' one, which if I remember rightly was voiced by Donald Pleasence. There was also one with a boy climbing an electricity pylon to retrieve a kite and a fairly gruesome one in which a boy lost his legs after being hit by a train. Oh, and one with a child running on a beach which stopped just as they were about to run onto a broken bottle. Trying to think of some of the other ones...

Ooh yes I remember those, they served us well, but they wouldn't be allowed now cos that would mean telling children they couldn't DO things !! Also they WERE quite sinister and children now might have nightmares about them. we just had to get on with it !

Rocketstop2 Fri 24-Apr-26 18:40:24

Animal magic, Tales of the riverbank, all the usual 'Watch with Mother ' stuff previously mentioned up thread.
Can always remember my Nan always used to seem to be watching a film with Barbara Stanwyck in !!
