Commercial Gambling is a Social Evil

Same as the illegal drugs industry,; commercial gambling both gives pleasure and ruins lives.

Same as commercial and illegal dog fighting; commercial gambling with dogs is cruelty to dogs for the sake of profit.

Commercialised horse racing gives pleasure as does cruelty to low value horses in bull fighting;

No excuse!

What a ridiculous comparator! Now if you said ban gambling and alcohol along with tobacco and vapes, then that would make more sense.

Actually what you've just said is Green Party policy is it not? Polanski wants to legalise all drugs and earn the tax revenue.

I am definitely against gambling adverts, but cannot see gambling per se ever having a blanket ban

Banning anything due to a small percentage of the population having a problem/addiction is far too authoritarian for my liking.

It's not going to happen because too much revenue is raised
On the other side why not legalize drugs and tax them, addicts dont matter they just facilitate the tax.

David49 Sat 18-Apr-26 20:18:15

Although Im a risk taker I abhor gambling because I know the odds are stacked against me and I cant win. It doesn't matter whether it's horses, lottery, or the stock market. Unless you have insider information and cheat you are going to loose

You're not going to stop it by complaining on Gransnet.

Set up an online petition.

You are so right. I did wonder what motivated me to post it on Gransnet. Short answers on Gransnet please.

That one of mine was short.

Re-reading it, it sounds rather blunt. Sorry!

Maremia Sat 18-Apr-26 15:28:12

You posted on Gransnet, to test the waters, and to perhaps drum up support for a ban?
Both reasons are, in my mind, fair enough.

Maremia Sat 18-Apr-26 15:26:21

Yes, I agree with the GNs who are saying ban gambling adverts.

Allira Sat 18-Apr-26 15:10:56

I don't think so!

It's been the way since humans evolved

I guess the difference is the effect gambling has on ordinary and humble people as opposed to those who can afford to "lose".

*I don't think advertising gambling should be allowed. Period. cut off the life support system*

I agree.

I just don’t think gambling should be advertised at all and that online gambling should have more controls.

I don’t think gambling or events using animals are the same at all, I don’t think either should be banned, but much better regulated and safer.

No way, Cossy. This world works commercially and militarily. Maybe the Age of Aquarius is dawning and commerce and war is the birth agony.

Allira DH just brought home a couple of lottery tickets he won in a raffle.

That's double gambling that is! grin

I'm a gambler, I buy National Lottery entries, raffle tickets and have Premium Bonds.

😁
Not one number on the Euromillions!

I don't know if any other GNs find this happening.

I browse the internet quite a bit but I am always very careful untick any boxes that allow third party access.

Nevertheless, I often get as many as twenty or so gambling notifications in my Junk file every day. They mainly offer free spins, whatever they are, as an inducement to join the sites. I should add that, apart from a bit of a flutter with 2p pieces in an arcade and the occasional raffle, I don't gamble.

What worries me is the fact that these sites appear to be totally unregulated and they must be tapping into other sites that have no relevance to betting and gambling. No doubt these sites are selling lists on.

It would be all too easy for me to click on one or more of these gambling sites for a 'free spin,' to get sucked in and end up on the slippery slope of gambling addiction.

😁

I hear North Korea is nice at this time of year.

Although shock there are two casinos there now (strictly for visitors - oh yeah?)
The casinos are designed purely for revenue extraction, allowing current Supreme Leader “Rocketman” Kim Jong Un, grandson of regime founder Kim Il Sung, to tap into international gambling demand whilst maintaining a hard internal ideological line.

Oh, and horse racing is allowed again because it brings in revenue. However, it is strictly for "the elite" - in an "egalitarian" society. 🤔

It's never going to happen.

Gambling of one kind or another is as old as human history goes back.

Sorry, DH was talking to me (asking me to check last night's lottery ticket 😁) and I didn't read your post properly.

Yes, I think gambling adverts should be banned.

Gambling itself will never be banned.

So, commercial gambling is what - betting on horses, doing the national lottery etc?

Horse racing
Greyhound racing (Horses are generally far better cared for than greyhounds)
Casinos
Lotteries
Scratch cards
Bingo
Online gambling (dangerous!)
Electronic machines
Slot machines - apparently the most addictive form of gambling. I'd better not save my pennies and twopences to give to the DGC if we go to the seaside 😲

DH just brought home a couple of lottery tickets he won in a raffle.

Wyllow3 Sat 18-Apr-26 11:24:23

I think that the most powerful "spreading the gambling possibilities" is probably social media, untouched by TV, but it's some way maybe.

JaneJudge Sat 18-Apr-26 11:23:56

my mother is addicted to scratchcards
