Well, well, well.

Meandrog - you seem to be a Boris fan but he ranks low with the majority- 5th of 7 in 21st Century Prime Ministers.

The Brexit referendum in 2016, under Cameron's government lead to getting the UK out of EU. Cameron resigned- Teresa May followed. Boris succeeded TM and reopened the Brexit withdrawal agreement negotiations. In context of his Brexit poor judgement and poor decisions - in early September 2019 Boris prorogued Parliament- the Supreme Court later rules he did this unlawfully.

Boris then agreed to a revised Brexit withdrawal agreement but he failed to win parliamentary support. So withdrawl negotiations continued until agreed and signed in January 2020.

The pros and cons of the withdrawal agreement and the adverse impact of that on the UK is another matter. It is safe to say that the adverse impact felt by the general population of those terms has lead to the majority of the population now believing the decision to leave the EU was wrong and the UK is worse off.

An interesting comparisons in context of the subject matter of this post: In 2022 Boris appointed Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip whilst he was well aware of sexual misconduct allegations against him. Boris's poor judgement call lead to a massive resignations of members of his government. In comparison, Starmer and those managing the vetting process did not know of the detail of Epstein file information relating to Peter M, released after his appointment. Starmer's government members have not, to date at least, resigned in massive numbers as they did for Boris.

Daily Mail poll showing 84% of readers want to rejoin the EU.

The paper was so embarrassed by the 84% vote to rejoin they reset the horizontal axis to make 84% look like 50%.

confused or is it me? It looks quite clear

Allira Sun 26-Apr-26 11:39:03

Oh, the blue bit, sorry. I didn't even look at that, just the percentages! 😁

twaddle Sun 26-Apr-26 11:40:11

The point is that the first horizontal blue bar, which is supposed to represent 86%, looks more like 50% (or perhaps a little more). Lots of people just look at visuals and don't bother with written figures, so they will end up thinking that it's still approximately half/half.

Ooops! Cross post. Sorry!

Taking the UK out of the EU has been shown to be a disaster.

I tend to look at figures and didn't even notice the blue!

It is more the memberships lack of understanding that Ed milliband would not be an electoral success rather than whether he would take the post but then again maybe 'electoral success' isn't the prize I thought it was.

David49 Sun 26-Apr-26 12:06:37

I don't believe they will want to rejoin when they know the terms that will be needed, there will be a majority maybe even 60%. You cant believe much that is printed in the Mail or most of the other newspapers.

There are still a lot of the UK that dont like foreigners and don't trust them

Membership of any party is in no way a representation of public opinion though, is it?

From the man, Philip Rycroft, who knows the ins and outs and ups and downs of Brexit- today says “we should start talking about rejoining the EU”

Philip Rycroft, who was permanent secretary of the Department for Exiting the EU, said the “argument was there to be won” about going back into Europe, adding that a “clear-headed appraisal of what is in the country’s best interests” was needed. However, he said rejoining the bloc could be a “long and windy” road. “Most economic analysis suggests that we have taken a significant hit to GDP as a result of leaving the single market,” he wrote in the Times.

“The precise number, and the impact on our export performance to the EU and beyond, might be subject to debate, but no one can credibly claim that we have marched to the sunny uplands of sustained economic growth as a consequence of Brexit.”

Rycroft said the promises of the Brexit campaign on issues from economics to immigration had not lived up to expectations. “The great promise of a comprehensive trade deal with the USA now seems like an impossible dream,” he said.

“Chill winds don’t just blow through the international trading order. The postwar certainties that underpinned our security as a nation are visibly crumbling. With a hot war on the European mainland perpetrated by a revanchist Russia and an increasingly disengaged America, it is beyond peradventure that we must look to solidarity with our friends and neighbours in Europe to secure our defences.”

He concluded: “The argument is there to be won. It is time to talk about rejoining. It might be time to knock on the EU’s door.”

I’m a party member. I don’t know anyone who wants Ed milliband as leader

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 16:02:41

I’m just a Labour voter not a member, and I realise that Party Members if they have their own way want Angela Rayner as PM.
Out of the frying pan and into the fire!

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 16:03:07

Ed Miliband? Just NO.

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 16:04:23

It’s high time after ten years to put the Referendum behind us and crack on!

Casdon Sun 26-Apr-26 16:28:08

Labour Party members don’t actually want a change of leadership.

LemonJam Sun 26-Apr-26 16:55:42

The UK has been cracking on for 10 years since the Brexit vote in 2016!

LemonJam Sun 26-Apr-26 17:01:01

The country has been cracking on with Labour in Government for nearly 2 years but the country gets a vote to elect a new government every 4 years based on performance to date....

Iam64 Sun 26-Apr-26 17:14:05

Party members don’t want a leadership challenge now. Angela Raynor the choice of the left not the moderate majority

Id be tempted if Andy Burnham could be a candidate but not right now

Labour Party members may not, but the backbenchers and a lot of people in this country do.

Casdon Sun 26-Apr-26 19:01:01

I was responding to your specific point saying that Labour Party members want Angela Rayner Oreo, there is no indication that that is the case.

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 19:46:50

A lot do it seems.

Oreo Sun 26-Apr-26 19:47:22

Thankfully it won’t happen.
