Why is Israel bombing Lebanon?

Trump describes it as a skirmish. Are 4 million displaced people a skirmish?

Are there terrorists imbedded in every street, in every home?

It's utterly wrong.

Maybe if Israel hadn't committed genocide in Gaza; stolen land it has no right too and continues to do so and celebrated with such enthusiasm the introduction of the death penalty by hanging for Palestinians it's destruction wouldn't be a priority for its enemies.

Death by hanging is simply putting into law what is in effect happening anyway. Israel has been killing Palestinians with impunity for years - look at the West Bank.

I'm going to bed, I can't take any more of it.

There is absolutely no justification for what Israel is doing.

Terrotists? Don't make me laugh.

Are you implying Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis et al are just cuddly bunnies who have no problem at all with the existence of Israel?

I’m not defending Netanyahu but being surrounded by enemies who want to destroy your country and its people is no laughing matter.

I don't support terrorists.

I don't support murdering thousands and thousands of innocent people.

This is not hunting down terrorists or defending land, it has gone way past that.

Why do people automatically think that criticising Israel means supporting Hezbollah, Hamas and Houthis? It most certainly doesn't.

It's a fact of life that Israel is situated on land which was taken from the pre WW2 owners - of course they're going to object! Nevertheless, Israel is never going to destroy all the Arab states, so it needs to make sure that it has strong defences. It has had billions pumped into defences, supported by the US. It has its iron dome and (with Mossad) reputedly one of the most effective secret services in the world. It has nuclear weapons. Bombing Lebanon and Iran will achieve nothing, although it might distract from what's happening in the West Bank and the introduction of the death penalty for Israeli Palestinians.

Because Hezbollah continue to fire rockets into Northern Israel.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other, surely?

Indeed. Be grateful that the man some of you so carelessly and critically call weak, flip-flop, rabbit caught in the headlights, has managed to handle himself with calmness, dignity and respect and not rushed us into a pointless and illegal war.

I utterly dread to think where we be if we had Johnson, Truss, Farage, Blair or any other PM guiding and leading us through this mess.

Starmer is not perfect, no one is, but I applaud his actions with Trump, Iran and Israel.

I agree.

Whatever your view, whatever the actual truth is, the only thing I see ahead of us now is more death, more destruction, more economic instability, more displaced people.

Frankly, at times, the human race disgusts me, it just doesn’t matter anymore who does what, who started what, what matters is who can finish it.

In the meantime, never mind about the mid-terms, the Epstein files, any poor Jewish hostages who might have somehow miraculously still be alive, Palestinians with nothing, being starved in their own country, Ukrainians still being bombed, not to mention people’s sons and daughters in all and any armed forces, whoever they are, whatever their nationality or colour, putting their lives on the line every day, for what? Liars and crooks and madmen who seemingly don’t give a fig about their own citizens let alone those in other countries.

I’ve seen and read utterly appalling acts and language from world leaders, whose greed and corruption is shocking beyond belief!

OP…. Because Lebanon is a hotbed of terrorism, Hezbollah tell the weak Lebanese government what to do, and they constantly fire missiles into Israel and have done for many years.

Hezbollah represent a significant minority in Lebanon, and they have some influence but they certainly do not 'Tell the Lebanese government what to do', any more than any minority party does in any state.

Their strength is greater than the Lebanese Army, they control many areas and are backed by Iran.

Allira Wed 08-Apr-26 21:47:43

But the hot bed contains civilians. And the bombig will create another generation of terrorists.

The hotbed on the border meant missiles were fired into Israel for years too so that towns and villages on the Israeli side of the border were left deserted and are ghost towns after residents fled.

I'm not defending what is happening now but trying to put it in perspective.

Perhaps the Lebanon/Israel conflict should not be a condition of the ceasefire in the Iran war.

And the bombig will create another generation of terrorists.
Yes. All of this will perpetuate the conflicts in the Middle East.

Granatlast007 Wed 08-Apr-26 21:30:26

Very much agree about Starmer, he has a dignified, calm stance that is so needed.
As for the rest, it's desperate, the above three posts say it all. How much longer do we have to put up with Trump and what will his legacy and successors have to offer. I can't believe the state of the world. I don't know how much it is true that the Iranians are building nuclear weapons, in some ways, who could blame them, they are not a pleasant regime but then neither is the USA at the moment. Sigh

Magenta8 Wed 08-Apr-26 21:26:46

Israel is bombing Lebanon because Netanyahoo is a ruthless, blood thirsty maniac bent on genocide. He is as bad, if not worse than Trump. They are a pair of brainless warmongers.

MayBee70 Wed 08-Apr-26 21:17:49

And maybe people might understand now why he has devoted a lot of time to building good relationships with other world leaders.

No wonder people are so despondent.

A good post in a very sad and uncomfortable sort of way.

Paddy Anne ‘ As for Trump he thinks he’s John Wayne in every old war film in the past …sadly he thinks because he’s American he can do as he pleases….seems he can..nobody has the guts to stand up against him’

Actually the Iranians are doing just that. He expected them to just give up.

Sir Kier Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are among the European leaders who are using diplomatic channels to stand up to him too.

Someone needs to stop Netanyahu and his vileIDF NOW
There will be no peace in the Middle East with Zionists in charge in Israel

Israel have got away with what they have done ( and are still doing) to the Palestinians so they think that, with Trump on their side they can do whatever they like.

Vile.

Well you’re wrong there as Hezbollah is already in the government and the gov is scared of them and can’t go against them.

So Israel is justified in killing Lebanese citizens who don't support Hezbollah, even though supporters are in a minority? Hmm ...

It doesn't really seem a good way to win people over to the Israeli cause and it certainly won't stamp out hatred towards people who destroy their country.

If I were a cynic, I'd think it's war for the sake of it. There are better ways of defending your country rather than ensuring that your closest neighbours hate you in perpetuity, especially when you have the support of the richest country on earth.

Actually petra, that is an idea. Especially if, as you suspect there is corruption.
Pay to get rid.

LemonJam Wed 08-Apr-26 18:31:44

Common sense informs the view the current fragile "truce'- conditional ceasefire will only work if Trump and Netanyahu continue negotiation/diplomacy efforts together, in agreement and Iran is negotiating with Trump and Netanyahu as an entity.

I do not have high hopes sadly. Plus Israel is not to be trusted when it comes to cease fire agreements as others have posted....
