Iran has been targeted again and again, had thousands literally of missile attacks, all the top dogs have been killed, their missile factories and weapons capabilities gone, their Navy gone, uranium enrichment gone and so on and so forth.They couldn’t even find two downed air crew.
The so called new Supreme leader may or may not exist.
They had no choice but to agree to a ceasefire and open up the Strait of Hormuz.

One thing I think we must all expect is Trumps revenge on NATO countries. What form this takes is not clear, but I would not be surprised if there is underhand cooperation with Putin in taking one of the Balkans, the USA as a NATO country refusing to defend them, and existing NATO countries left out to dry.

But if it is to mean anything we must remain firm against such threats and Trumps nonsense.

You'd be hard pushed to call US under Trump 'a normal country with a normal government' these days! Let's not forget US have not always played "clean" when it comes to Iran.

Between 1981 and 1986 The US imposed an arms embargo that left the Iran military, in the midst of its war with Iraq, desperate for weapons etc. However the Reagan administration thought that would likely push the Iranians to seek support from the Soviet Union, which it considered not in us interests. Rather than end the embargo Reagan decided to secretly sell weapons to Iran starting in 1981. This carried on until 1986 when a Lebanese magazine exposed the deal. That revelation sparked the Iran Contra scandal in the US with Reagan's officials found to have collected money from Iran illegally and sent those funds to anti socialist rebels, the Contras in Nicaragua.

It was actually IRAN who quietly contacted the US State Department through the Swiss embassy in Iran in 2003, seeking a 'dialogue in mutual respect' to address 4 big issues- nuclear weapons, terrorism, Palestinian resistance and stability in Iraq. Dialogue continued on and off (mostly off) until 2015 when an Iran Nuclear deal was signed achieved by Obama's administration diplomatic efforts from 2013 to success in 2015. The deal was signed by US, China, France, Germany, Russia and the UK. It severely limited Iran's capacity to enrich uranium and mandated international inspectors to monitor and enforce Iran's compliance with the agreement. Inspectors regularly certified that Iran was abiding by the terms agreements right up until 2018.

Then it was President Trump that then withdrew from this agreement in May 2018. 2 years later in 2020 US drones killed the leader of Iran's elite Quds force. Trump claimed at the time that there was an imminent Iran attack against US assets but no clear evidence has ever been found/provided to support that claim. I could go on but we've all seen how things have played out between Trump/Us and Iran since he came back into office 2025.

I suspect Trump may need to accept in the coming 2 weeks/months his only available goal in reality is to exert diplomacy and try and get back to the agreement he withdrew from in 2018. For this he will need to oversee US diplomatic efforts with Iran and other allies (after denigrating and undermining them on the world stage recently) to get signatures on board similar to the agreement in 2015.

Israelis say Trump didn't consult them, but hopefully the real possibility of incurring USA's wrath will make them confine themselves to badmouthing all & sundry and not actually breaking the Iran ceasefire.
It's ridiculous, Israel is less than a third the size of Scotland, a smidgen bigger than Wales, & it has so much influence over events in that pivotal part of the world.

It is highly armed too.

If Iran maintains its goal of destroying Israel and sponsoring terrorism we will be back here again in a few years, the old leaders have gone the new leaders have got to commit to peaceful coexistence.

Trump is making deals as he has always done, he is dealing with despots. He got a ceasefire. He is just president for a couple more years. Western democracies don’t have lifelong leaders and presidents like Iran, Russia, china et al. Be careful what you wish for. Israel too is a pluralist liberal democracy fighting for its survival. There are 53 Muslim countries just one Jewish one under severe threat. Antisemitism has not been as high since the holocaust. Jews have the right of a safe homeland in Israel which offers a home to any Jew anywhere something they didn’t have till after their mass extermination by Germany less than a hundred years ago. Never again , everyone swore and now antisemitism is rife. Remember over 6000 Palestinians from Gaza invaded a peaceful music festival in Israel and horrendously raped murdered tortured and took hostage over 1000 young innocents and vowing they would do it again.
