The Uk navy is the most depleted since 1642.

If the US decides to stop funding NATO, where does that leave the Uk and Europe?
Especially against a possible landgrab by Russia, in the Eastern Countries of Europe. At some, maybe not too distant point.

And this assumes that the US doesnt help Russia.

We could be left in a quite precarious position.

Hopefully and prayerfully, things wont get to the worst case scenarios.

Where does it say that?
Pretty sure it doesnt.

And what about education?

I would rather not have to report you petra.
So I wont for now.

Please don’t report Petra.

I absolutely and completely understand her anger and agree with her!

I also think sometimes, if you’ve lived outside of the UK for many decades, it’s far too easy to sit back and throw insulting statements out, then to attempt to justify them by accusing others of gaslighting Sorry, but the initial comment and follow up accusations were bang out of order!

Absolutely, the navy and armed forces have been downgraded in a world which seemed safer not so long ago. So many things needing funding, no one wanting to pay taxes, we seem to be living a dangerous divine where people announce they only want to pay for what they themselves use (eg, why should I pay for education if I don't have children), but expect top quality infrastructure, mended roads, services provided, governments who leap to bring you home immediately if you happen to have holidayed somewhere where trouble has broken out and so on.

Expectations have gone through the roof with a whole load of shouting and demands and little attention to reality.

Well thanks to Russia and the orange man, a reality check has arrived, I wish we could all take a step back and think about supporting instead of shouting.

Go ahead, report me. Shaking in my boots 😂
I assumed ( obviously wrong 😂) that people would understand I was paraphrasing the bible quote.
Psalm 141:3
Set a guard oh lord over my mouth. Keep watch over the door of my lips.

Thank you for that info.

I realise I now dont know a single person who is in the Uk navy.
Havent done for a while now.

Some of the comments on this thread about our defences are encouraging.

I, like others, think we will have to increase the money spent on defence.
Which is going to take a while.
We have, sadly, been caught out.

We may, or may not, get away with it.
Time will tell.

Well before that they defeated the Spanish Armada but these days they would probably have just hidden away and admitted defeat.

I assume you’re deeply ashamed that your navy spends time on our military vessels.
Deepest sympathy to you and your family. I hope this information isn’t generally known.

Our Armed Forces are very brave.
However, they are sadly depleted and neglected.

Ex-navy, family friend, now retired had this to say
As do our friends.

I won't quote it all but DH and many of our friends are RN retired and have been saddened, and angry too, by the attitude of past and present Governments towards the Armed Forces, particularly the Royal Navy.

What we have is excellent - if it's not in for maintenance or updating.

nanna8 I'm not sure if the programme about HMS Prince of Wales with JJ Chalmers is available in Australia but it is worth a watch.
The Prince of Wales is, of course, in for a refit and update at the moment and yes, our Forces have been starved of money, not just by this Government.

BBC. podcast - Complex
Kimberley and her guest, psychotherapist and author Jennifer Cox, explore ‘gaslighting’ and how to recognise it. It's a term that's often bandied about but it has serious consequences.

Worth listening before you bandy about labels that are actually complicated and misused.

Glad to see posters with knowledge on this subject, speak up.

It matters not to me which Political persuasion people are on this.

I read a report on how Germany is heavily re-arming since Russia invaded Ukraine as it is at the front line if Russia tries to expand again. They are restricted in what they are allowed to have as regards weapons . We too need to boost our armed forces as our NATO Allies are doing so that Russia sees we are united against them should it be needed

Well do something about it - fund them for goodness sake and stop giving money to those who don’t work and don’t earn it.

Mmmmm

Gaslighting

Granatlast007 Sat 28-Mar-26 12:39:36

Ex-navy, family friend, now retired had this to say:

'There were cutbacks with end Cold War, but the Tory "Strategic" Defence Review when they came into office in 2010 is where serious rundown of navy started (our great success story in Iraq & Afghanistan is where all money & political attention went) & by the time they left office in 2024 there really was not much left & Labour just continued the policy.

Ships were scrapped early with replacements delayed & numbers cut, remaining ships & subs were run on well past their "Sell By". Royal Fleet Auxiliary (the unsexy but essential logistics train) suffered even worse & we now have no stores ships to provide carrier task group with food, spares & ammunition, which is a slight problem! Running ships on & having too few ships for tasks means ships are in poor state when they go in for refit & those refits inevitably end up longer & more expensive than planned, so the operational ships have to run harder & longer until they eventually get a refit, which is even longer & more expensive, etc. Result in our SSBN fleet of four is that patrols have increased steadily from well-established 70 days average (absolute max 80) from 1960s to 2010, to norm of over 200 days (210 current record). Unsurprisingly morale has gone through the floor, sailors are voting with their feet & recruiting (outsourced of course) is dire, so we cannot even fully crew the few ships that we do have.'

Unfortunately, I think most people now consider potholes more important than defence unless forced to think about it. Idiots on our local chat were raging about the colour of tarmac our local council had used on resurfacing a pedestrian area 'when they could have put down block paving'. When I dared to say something about cost and continuous cutbacks of council funding, some got very annoyed. Hopeless.

Grandmabatty Sat 28-Mar-26 12:39:28

The only person here who is gaslighted is you nanna8. What do you based your statement on? It's easy to incite another country's children to fight and possibly die when you live nowhere near. And call them cowards, which is what you imply.

Basgetti Sat 28-Mar-26 12:38:26

Are there no benefits in Australia?

Basgetti Sat 28-Mar-26 12:37:41

Gaslighting?

nanna8 Sat 28-Mar-26 12:35:16

And cease with the gaslighting also.

nanna8 Sat 28-Mar-26 12:31:32

Well do something about it - fund them for goodness sake and stop giving money to those who don’t work and don’t earn it.

Basgetti Sat 28-Mar-26 12:28:13

I agree, Cossy. Shameful thing to say.

I think you do our armed forces staff a huge disservice.
