Shabana Mahmood has announced plans to pay £10,000 per person with a maximum of £40,000 for families of 4 or more as an incentive to leave the UK. These people are failed asylum seekers and have no right to be here so AIBU in thinking this money would be far better spent elsewhere? Surely having no right to stay means they should be deported and incentives shouldn't come into it.

Maxmyers 15.07 : "I used to work in this sector. I would echo the comments already made; it is not so simple as simply deporting failed asylum seekers, if it was then successive governments would not have struggled and failed to find a solution. As others have said, claimants use a variety of tactics - destroy their paperwork, falsely claim to be from countries which are war zones, falsely claim to be minors, go through countless appeals etc etc. The government is making a pragmatic decision in considering paying them to leave because ultimately it will be cheaper to the tax payer and faster-if it works. It is not a new idea and has been tried with some success in Denmark and will only be open to a strictly defined group. Time will tell…."

I would echo and agree. First obvious issue you have to be certain of country of origin to deport back to. Age assessments can involve social worker, psychologist/psychiatrist/medical/dental assessments etc. Claims of trafficking and abuse need to be investigated. All have high associated costs and often take a protracted amount time- meanwhile accommodation costs racking up. Plus legal costs for state and defence legal aid. Court costs etc etc. The point being these costs may far exceed the £10k per person.

I think it an utter disgrace and a kick in the teeth to every hardworking person in this country.
A failed asylum seeker who shouldn’t be here in the first place, gets accommodation, health care, pocket money clothes and goodness knows what else whilst here. They then appeal over and over again at huge cost to us I expect then is paid to leave. If they are illegal they should just be deported.

I feel so angry about this I could cry !

A Labour minister explained on Thursday that its
a really good deal as much cheaper than the £160,000 it costs us to keep each asylum seeker EACH YEAR !!

PIPPA ..I agree with you, why should it cost us..the taxpayer so much money to keep people who should never have been allowed into this country in the first place., and why should we have to pay them thousands to get rid of them,,

Cannot believe that people make judgements without the small print
This is exactly how Germany descended in the 1930s. People listened to sound bites from the fascists.
Labour btw are buying into the same in that they talk about it being safe to return for some when they know it’s not.
I’m sad we’re spending huge amounts on armament not Waspis but that money is not going to refugees.
Migrants contribute more than they take.
When did you last see a doc who wasn’t a migrant or 2nd gen. ? Dentist? Physio? Consultant? GP? I’ve seen all in last week and all have been pleasant and well established here.
The only one who wasn’t was my Polish dentist who only works here one month in two and then goes home for the other. I guess dentists are private in effect and she’s got enough money to refuse one who can’t wait a month to finish treatment. That was my crime.
We need a better nhs and less nuclear war heads which never made anybody feel better.

Pippa22 17.46- "I think it an utter disgrace and a kick in the teeth to every hardworking person in this country.

Stage 1- By Law, the UK and all other countries, have to process and assess each asylum seeker in order to determine whether they are legal and eligible or illegal in the first place. That takes time and meanwhile they need housing and feeding, healthcare etc as you set out.

The Law: Individuals feeling persecution based on religion, nationality or political opinion can seek protection in another country when they fear persecution or harm- it is a Fundamental Human Right reinforced by law. The law states they do not break the law by cording borders without authorisation to seek asylum. International Law does not mandate that refugees must claim asylum in the very first safe country they reach.

Stage 2- Asylum seekers if found to be illegal has the legal right to appeal the decision. They must have legal representation and be housed etc whilst waiting for the court to hear the appeal- this is a legal right. This stage 2 has costs FAR IN EXCESS of £10k as the UK can only deport a failed asylum seeker once illegal stays has been established and an appeal has been tested in court.

Thus a £10k offer per person to vluntatirly remove themselves AFTER stage 1 and to make stage 2 unnecessary the government is proposing this limited trial- ie as a cost saving exercise- £10k per person cost versus potential £160k cost for time period of stage 2 with all associated costs- which by law the UK can NOT avoid its legal responsibilities.

I bet those dentists physios consultants and GP's took the legal route over,

Yes I would agree- Dentists, physios and consultants, GPs etc from abroad making an application to come to live and work in the UK must pay for their applications, earn above a certain amount and a sum towards NHS costs etc ie cover their costs. The £10k trial subject of this thread only applies to asylum applications.

Wish they’d send them all back and shut the mosques down on the way out.

And what about the muslims who were born here and want to practise their religion as is their human rights?

I don't understand why the government ditched the Rwanda scheme as soon as it took office, seeing millions were already paid to Rwanda. The scheme would have acted as a deterrent for economic migrants entering the UK. It's madness offering failed asylum seekers £10k each to leave the UK. Deportation is threatened if the offer is not accepted within 7 days, so why not simply just deport them without making this offer? Makes no sense

Why bribe them with thousands to leave when they've paid thousands to be shoehorned into the country illegally? Thus proving they are pretty solvent and don't need taxpayers money.

Obviously they have funds and are far from broke - they will have paid money upfront because I shouldn't imagine the ruthless smuggling gangs accept IOU's.

Furret Sat 07-Mar-26 22:46:40

Stupid policy. I’m beginning to wonder if the entire Labour Cabinet have been abducted by aliens, cloned and replaced by look alikes, but somewhere in the process their brains have been affected.

I was, and still could be, a Labour supporters but this lot have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by their complete inability to read the room.

I despair.

Furret Sat 07-Mar-26 22:47:59

PS. I have no problem with asylum seekers.

That once very liberal country, Finland, now has a conservative government.
In January 2026 they changed their settled status requirement drastically.
To receive the above you must speak the language ( over 65s and children are exempt) and prove that you have integrated into the Finnish culture.

Not dissimilar to many of the changes made and proposed fir the UK recently then petra. I think virtually the whole of Europe is doing similar. Here are ours as it stands now:

Key Requirements and New Rules (2025-2026)
Continuous Residence: You must have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands, or the Isle of Man for at least 5 years.
Absence Rules: Generally, you cannot have been absent for more than 6 months in any 12-month period.
New "30/60" Rule: For those with pre-settled status who broke continuity, you may now qualify if you have been resident in the UK for at least 30 months in the most recent 60-month period.
Automatic Conversion: The Home Office is automatically switching eligible pre-settled status holders to settled status, so you may not need to apply.
Proposed Tougher Rules: New requirements may include B2 level English, a clean criminal record, and 3 years of national insurance contributions (earning £12750)

Required Documentation
Proof of Identity: A valid passport, national identity card, or biometric residence card.
Evidence of Residence: Documents covering your 5-year stay, such as council tax bills, school/university letters, or bank statements.
National Insurance Number: To verify your employment and residence history.

Note: The standard waiting period for settlement is increasing to 10 years for some, but 5 years still applies to many EUSS and family routes.
