It’s the first time in history that the technology exists to take out a government which doesn’t have wide approval from outside powers. Whether this is used for the greater good and benefit remains unclear. However I think it gives the government in charge of the technology unlimited powers and control. Too sci-fi? But it’s happened.

The program was written by a us tech company called Palantir.
The owner started PayPal.
This company were also awarded an nhs contract worth £440ml.

I thought they were using Claude, AI developed by Anthropic.

Yes it is Claude, according to the GCHQ chap.

This is one article I read.

But not to worry. In another article NHS England assured us that this info wouldn’t be passed over to them.

Not denying that, Petra. Palantir has a big contract with the MOD as well.

It's just that it isn't used by the US military.

Though it could well happen as Anthropic refused to allow Claude to be used for domestic civilian surveillance and autonomous firing of weapons. Trump threw a wobbly about that and said that no-one was allowed to use it in future. Its contract with the US military has 6 months to run.

I believe other AI companies have fewer scruples than Anthropic.

Autonomous firing of weaponry (i.e with no human direction) sounds terrifying to me.

Everyone is more intelligent than Trump.

It is just that Trump has the biggest weapons and will use them.

US has bombed an Iranian desalination plant which supplies water to civilians. This is a disgusting misuse of power and is a war crime. Shame on the US military for using such tactics!

Let's not put China on a pedestal they are breaking sanctions supporting Ukraine, they also support the most despotic and corrupt regimes, happily trade in blood minerals without any conscience.

We and most other western nations have mortals and ethics and it's very costly.

Not aware of the military testing site, or the US company running it, but I'm not in the least surprised to hear that.

I have just seen on Bluesky that the OpenAI head of robotics has resigned. This is the company that will take over from Anthropic, apparently.

She has resigned because the boss of Open AI,has happily gone along with OpenAI being used for civilian surveillance without any judicial oversight and 'lethal autonomy without human oversight' in order to get a government contract.

It's a shame that all the AI companies didn't put their feet down on these points, which would have stymied Trump. but hey, what do scruples have to do with making shedloads of money?

A very eloquent letter in the Telegraph from the Bishop of Chelmsford in response to Lord Biggar citing the murder of her brother by the Islamic Republic to justify the actions of the Trump regime.

SIR - I'm touched that Nigel Biggar remembers my late brother Bahram Dehqani-Tafti (Comment, March 3), who made such a great impact during his short life. But my brother would not have wanted his assassination to be appropriated for moral justification of the attack on Iran.

This is a war of choice rather than necessity. The Iranian regime is odious and repugnant, but it did not pose an imminent threat that justified pre-emptive self-defence. Diplomacy might have been working frustratingly slowly, but it was working. It certainly hadn't been exhausted.

The lack of clarity as to the war's aims, and the absence of any forethought about what comes next belie the notion that this is either a moral war or a just one. International law exists precisely to prevent the use of force in such circumstances. Without it, force prevails, the strong prey on the weak, and states routinely act with impunity to resolve their disputes with might. It is a world that invites fear rather than hope.

This is not a world my brother would have advocated. He would be horrified at the terror that has been unleashed by this war. He would weep for the plight of the powerless caught up in the political machinations of the powerful. He would be saddened by the prospect of another Iraq or Libya. He would want to see the West supporting the Iranian people to find their own solution to their country's future, not leaving them as pawns in the games of others.

If Lord Biggar wants to make the ethical case for an unjust and illegal war, he should do so without invoking the memory of my brother.

This is a very touching letter but is seen only from the American perspective which fights to enable Israel’s future and this has been left unsaid. Iran poses a continuing threat to Israel and whether regime change in Iran brings about peace in Israel only time will tell. Assuming that there is eventually a move away from theocracy in Iran and that might not happen, Trump seems to think it’s possible to assassinate every Ayatollah who steps forward as supreme leader. Trump does have a plan.

We already have wall to wall surveillance in built up areas, and even rural areas there are many CCTV systems on houses farms and businesses, plus number plate recognition on roads.
Bank and card transactions can be traced, our mobile phone can be tracked and monitored, online activity too.

AI enhancements will probably bring all the sources together more quickly, big brother is going get smarter, if it makes life harder for criminals that's fine by me.

Trump’s plan changes on a sixpence. His plan now to kill every Ayatollah will soon morph into Iran’s nuclear capability again or to support the Iranian people who will need to rise up and get rid of the regime themselves, presumably whilst being bombed by the US and Israel and shot by the regime.
He has given a different plan nearly every day.
Who knows what he will say later today or tomorrow.

But David, what if the ones who control AI have criminal, controlling intent?

Talking to a friend recently, I was surprised that Israel’s dilemma was not given any voice. I was given the view that Israel has destroyed Palestine, taken away Palestinian land and deserves everything that comes their way from Iran. So for the USA to very firmly back Israel against Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran doesn’t seem to have registered in the British mindset. There is a plan for Iran to relinquish theocratic governance. Trump has not said this is my plan but more simply, I will take out the next Ayatollah. That’s a plan. We need to get used to his way of communicating.

I agree. the eloquent letter you quoted at 9.09 ending " If Lord Biggar wants to make the ethical case for an unjust and illegal war, he should do so without invoking the memory of my brother". reflects the majority of public opinion, ie the war is unjust and illegal.
