"Everytime I remind myself of these things I find our country's history amazing yet again. It's a vast woven tapestry"
Same here! there's not a day that goes by when peeling the humble carrot that I'm just thankful to the Romans for diversifying our the nations allotments, Ok so they enslaved a few in chains, I blame Boudica for pissing them off
but....... where would we be without the carrots, the onions they introduced to the British Isles. Not to mention all the other culinary delights they enriched the nation with.
What we do know is the average Celtic diet was Jack S**t, a sort of Atkins without the cheese and cream. Dismal load of meat and grains, changed forever after 55BC, when the delights of Lasagna, Cannelloni, Spaghetti Vongole hit our shores. Ok so the chicken tikka pizza, was yet to arrive, but they still did awaken the Celtc taste buds with a damn good Margherita. Celtic children meanwhile were so delighted with just one Cornetto, they were recorded hot footing it en masse down at the Temple of Mithras before you could utter so much as Veni Vidi Vici offering up a few sheep or whatever else they could lay their grubby mitts on. No access to the Roman baths or any of the Dolce and Gabbana bath products found at such places they sadly remained filthy.
Anyway, I'm just about to have a flat white thank you, you lovely Antipodeans for giving us this wonderful beverage, we were so glad when you colonised Earls Court, a positive cultural wasteland before. I'm accompanying my coffee with a "cronut", delicious! a sort of hybrid croissant/doughnut. Not sure the French would approve they get so hoity toity about appropriation of their culture, anyway who cares! I like these to be served on a lace Huguenot doily. For lunch I'm having a Jerk infused latke foccacia
