If Valentine greeting aren't the norm in your culture-they may well be misunderstood and definitely not to be given by children.

They thought that she'd have sex with them - not understanding that she's married and has no intention of doing so .

How old is your friend? I’d be careful about assuming what anyone was thinking. Your friend may just have a friendly personality, and the shop assistants may simply have been responding in kind.

Call me old-fashioned but I thought Valentine's cards were sent anonymously from one person to another, with whom they might wish to have a romantic liaison.

It’s completely inappropriate for children to contact or correspond with people they don’t know. If adults wish to welcome people into their community they are free to so even if most people would think it was extremely ill advised.

I agree. It’s not about the TYPE of card sent, it’s simply that they’ve been encouraged to send cards to complete adult strangers

The Greens, like Reform, contain some strange people. Locally I wouldn't vote for them as they are anti nuclear, which would devastate the local economy, but they have cranky people like this councillor and a leader who thinks legalising hard drugs will solve the drugs problem. To me they are a party I'd advise people to be very careful about voting for, and would advise voters on the left to either stick with Labour or vote Lib Dem.

We are human beings not automatons. What a cynical attitude to deem romantic love outdated. It's a timeless heightened emotion that often is one of the great highs and sometimes lows of the human condition. Otherwise we enter the horrible world the Soviet Union created of the "personal life is dead". perhaps that way of thinking resonates with some, personally I think it's a very negative point of view. The gesture of romantic love by way of sending a card is still alive and kicking present in the shops certainly amongst the cards I've scanned. Albeit what surrounds all of that is big business and like all special days in the calendar its long since been turned into a commercial enterprise. The range of cards, everything from hearts and flowers to rude sexualised content, are solely aimed at loved ones, or someone in the giver's sights, or possibly sent as a joke.

I think the premise of a Valentine card sent from a child, sweet as it briefly maybe, our children need to know the love they have for their parent is entirely different from that they will have for a prospective partner. I remember trying to explain that to my then 4 year old who said "when I grow up I'm going to marry you mummy" At that age children have no concept of prospective romantically involved relationships. Maybe it's something that would be deemed quite sweet in the moment where adult life is beyond their comprehension. Definitely something I wouldn't encourage once they grew out of that stage.

I'm not sure you can just wipe out romantic love as being socially outdated because many people worldwide still use Valentines Day to express this passion and intensity. Even the most outwardly frigid of souls surprise themselves on Valentines Day!

We are, after all, human beings and to remove romance from our veins, you'd have to remove our hormones, our adrenaline, our neurological responses etc.

Romantic love and the expression thereof, is not relegated to history, it is timeless and universal, and a lasting physical phenomenon. Do a bit of background reading to learn that it not courtly love at all.

Orange hearts can be used every day of the week to express whatever their kind message is all about, but Valentines Day, February 14th, is completely different and its meaning is here to stay.
