Tax coming for EV’s

Agreed, how are they going to monitor it? How much will that cost to do? Hardly think it will encourage people to buy electric?

I understand that we will have to take our vehicles in once a year to have the mileage checked and noted. We drive in France quite a lot and already pay huge amounts in tolls to use the French motorways, now we will be paying double, as that mileage will be charged for here in the U.K. as well

It all sounds ill-thought-out.

I heard on TV that EV drivers will have to present themselves at MOT testing centres annually to have their mileage recorded and submitted. A nice little extra earner for the lost MOT’s. !

EVs use the roads do they should contribute! It won’t be long before government decide EVS are not good for the planet! Using Russian electricity, no way of disposing of the batteries, using children to go down the mines

That seems like a giant leap! However, I am not sure that EV's are the way forward as an Eco solution.

On your VED renewal form there will be a box for current milage and another for estimated milage next year, 10,000 miles will cost you £300.
On your next renewal you put milage and you oat more or less according to your estimate, it can’t get much simpler

They already have milage on your MOT so the scope for fraud is very small, the real fraud will still be done by those who don’t Tax, Insure or MOT their cars

This is not going to encourage anyone to change to EV, those that drive EV a lot abroad are going to be paying twice, but if you drive 3000 miles abroad it would be £90, one tank of petrol on a large car.

At year 3 it catches up with you but they are not going to accept a zero estimate.

I intend to estimate 80% of milage and pay the extra at the end

You may have to take car annually to an accredited MOT garage to get mileage recorded.

RR was asked about the 3 years before MOT needed and she said that drivers will be able to work it out. Not sure that everyone would necessarily be honest

The idea about having to take the car to a MOT centre sounds like a good idea.

It's just ridiculous.

My car is a hybrid, not plug-in. It tells me after each journey whether or not my driving was eco-friendly. I pay £195 pa but do very little mileage.

What is the reasoning behind the VED being linked to mileage?

I understand EVs under three years old will have to book into an MOT garage and have their mileage noted. How they will then be charged for their mileage it’s anyone’s guess.

My EV owning friends are all happy to pay … why shouldn’t they contribute to using the roads as non EV owners do?

I would imagine there is a program already onboard that’s just sitting there waiting to be remotely switched on.

All cars should pay VED.
But the government wants to recoup the fuel duty losses it’s making from encouraging people to drive EV, regardless of emissions.
Anyone here didn’t believe that would happen?

Well, my hybrid uses very little fuel if I drive carefully but I pay the standard £195 pa.

Surely that is far simpler?

It was an attempt to manipulate public behaviour, it may have worked but it backfired!

So RR and this government think that garages should do these checks for free? What a preposterous idea -why should they do the dirty work for them and free!
Also what a great incentive to do a bit of 'clocking'

I feel for those complaining that they’ll be charged twice if they’re paying toll charges abroad and mileage charges to cover the loss of fuel tax here, but when we drive abroad, we have to pay toll charges as well as fuel charges. 😥

If this latest Labour idea takes off, it will be snapped up by foreign governments wanting to charge for loss of fuel duty for mileage done on their roads.

E.g. You get your mileage checked at the border on arrival and again on departure and receive a bill from any government involved in your travel.
Drivers in the UK, can give those figures as evidence that their mileage was outside the UK and therefore should not be taxed in the UK.

The 3p a mile is to replace the fuel duty lost on EVs
It’s 1.5p a mile on Hybrids.
It’s just collected at the same time as VED

As more EVs are on the road it will increase.

There will probably be the equivalent of a smart meter fitted to electric cars.

There is talk of “road charging”, different cost depending on the roads you use.
Whether that is ever going to be a practical system I don’t know but it’s certainly a complicated one.

Perfectly sensible to tax EV users. They use the roads which need maintenance and their cars are usually heavier so cause more road wear.
