I’m finding it difficult not to equate this to the reports that men from Afghanistan are disproportionately represented in reported sex offences against females

Afghan earthquake, Taliban rescuers cannot rescue women.
(67 Posts)Something that had never occurred to me in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Afghan women were left to die in the wake of the country’s 6.6 magnitude earthquake because of Taliban rules forbidding unrelated men from having contact with them, The Telegraph has been told.
The quake killed thousands of people and devastated homes across the country’s mountainous areas on Sunday, with two powerful aftershocks on Friday raising fears of more death and destruction.
Survivors say the Taliban’s draconian restrictions – as much as the tremors – have cost Afghan women their lives.
It took rescuers 20 hours to reach Devagarh village on Monday in one of the worst-hit areas. When they did arrive, the women hid behind the broken walls of their houses after seeing the all-male rescue team, one rescuer told The Telegraph.
“We can’t speak with the women or try to contact them because it’s prohibited. Touching even a dead woman will have consequences,” he said, seeking anonymity.
This is beyond sad, the cultural differences are so enormous.
The Taliban are respectful of women - really butterandjam
I do not believe a woman lying in such pain under a pile of rubble would cry “you are no gentleman “ to rescuers

Islamist extremism, that’s the sort of thing you get.We shouldn’t be sending any aid there whatsoever.
It's not " Islamist extremism". I
It's a convention of Muslim culture based on respect for women. Even very westernised, well integrated Muslims living in UK will very often observe it; discreetly so as not to cause any unintended offence .When Muslim friends introduce me to their male friends or family members, out of courtesy they will not offer to shake my hand and I would never dream of putting them on the spot by extending my own.
Frankly I wish more westerners would be as polite over touching.. I hate it when someone you just met 5 seconds ago leans in for a hug or kiss.
Based on respect for women, yeah right!
The Taliban are Islamist extremists btw who take Muslim and Afghani culture to a whole new low level, especially where women are concerned.
Not really relevant Allira, just a point of information, that's exactly what happened to some Victorian women who allowed themselves to die of intimate cancers, rather than let male doctors examine them. And so, women began to get permission to train as doctors. It was one of the factors in this advance.
In previous times, there were 'wise women' to consult.
Okay, back to the actual post.

So would you prefer to lie somewhere and slowly die rather than have a male paramedic lift you up, a male doctor examine you and a male nurse attend to you?

Well he has shown his truth now.

He certainly has!

Some respect that leaves women trapped under rubble to die. It appears to be more rooted in the 'ownership' of women by their male family members.
Frogoet So are you suggesting we should just ignore the lack of women's rights under the Taliban because there are abuses elsewhere?
Women’s rights in many countries are dire.
Rural India. Saw it myself. Not Moslem area.
Iraq.
Human rights are more than questionable in say Saudi.
We cannot withdraw aid as a bargaining chip.
It will take much more to do that.
Meanwhile any life in Gaza counts for nothing. That’s Israel with tacit US backing.

It’s how even from childhood how they view women
How do these mean think they managed to be born? It's entirely illogical to see women's lives as inferior when their whole existence is due to a mother delivering and nurturing them.
It's not the first time though is it? Remember the girls who died in the fire because no one could rescue them?
I can't imagine how the people of Afghanistan can put up with the Taliban when I imagine the utter rage I would feel if it was my mother, sisters and daughters that weren't being rescued. I don't believe there is anything the West can do - the change has to come from within or it just becomes a Western civilisation persecuting a different religion.
Those poor women. There are no words really.
Are outside aid agencies going in to help e.g. MSF? If so, hopefully they will send female rescuers and medics to help the women.
Surely any aid money should be going to official aid agencies … not to the Taliban.
They are bad men.
I feel the only way I can mentally process some dangerous ethnic or religious practices is to regard the people who do those practices as mentally unstabilised by their beliefs.
It's no help to victims such as women and girls to regard the Taliban simply as bad people.
Sorry I wasn't clear there, I fundamentally disagree with their position on prostitution and their position on Self ID. Both indicate a lack of understanding of women's rights and why they may be vulnerable.
But I dont want to distract too mych from the thread. The women of Afghanistan have basically been left to suffer this horror.
I will have a look at Freedom from torture, thanks .
One way to support these women is as Oreo suggests, to not send money into their system.
And yet, didn't Farage say that when he becomes Prime Minister, he will send refugees, from wherever to, Afghanistan, and will pay the Taliban government for this accommodation?
'Freedom from Torture'. Will look that up, thanks.
Also there was a thread, maybe last year, about supporting women in Afghanistan.
Not so easy to do now that many aid agencies have left.
For Rosie51, I have just googled 'organisations that can help women in Afghanistan'. AI lists at least 8. You can further research them, and then decide which one/s you would like to support.
Also Malala heads an organisation listed further down.
I supported AA for many years, but their stance on women’s rights made me cancel my DD and open one with Freedom From Torture instead.
My heart goes out to the women of Afghanistan. It’s impossible to comprehend what they are going through, isn’t it?
I haven't been following that aspect Galaxy. Prostitution and ID, are they confusing the issues?
Excuse the spelling errors!
I think their stance on both prostitution and self id indicates a complete lack of understanding of women's rights why wonen can be vulnerable.
