Farage tax avoidance

Farage claimed last year to have “bought a house” in his constituency, but the property is actually owned in the name of his partner, meaning he legally avoided higher-rate stamp duty on the purchase of an additional home – given that he already owns other properties.
I suppose that he can justify this by saying that he is rarely in Clacton.

It really would be boring - you and I can agree on one thing anyway - apparently we are going to have an Indian Summer next week, which we will both enjoy - but others won’t agree!

Her only error was that she didn’t follow the advise of the conveyance solicitors, who recommended she gain specialist tax advice relating to her particular circumstances.

She’s accepted that she made a mistake and should have sought further advice. Because of that, she’s done the decent thing and resigned.

I personally don’t think she needed to resign, but it was deemed that her mistake meant her behaviour ‘wasn’t of the highest standard’ for someone in public office.

So be it. She’s accepted it. I’ve accepted it.

Now let’s ensure that the behaviour of all those in public office is held to the highest standard.

Many on GN don’t like anything ‘two tier’ so let’s have a level playing field for all MPs.

You’ve assumed everybody shares your view in saying ‘her just desserts’ Oreo. It’s the same with everybody who is forced to resign, in reality there is black, white, and a thousand shades of grey. I think she had to go, but I don’t relish it, I think it’s sad. Equally there are those who are gleefully rubbing their hands and saying ‘I told you so’ and those who don’t think she had to resign because it was a mistake.

Even if it was a genuine mistake it’s still just desserts.In the position of a government minister and deputy PM this sort of carelessness costs you your job.If Starmer so wants he can bring her back next year for another position but my feeling is he won’t want to.The unions may bully him into it of course as she only held a high position because of their support.

IMO he gets very little challenge from the media - plenty of oxygen (praise even) but few media bods seem to want to scratch beneath the ‘dirty surface’ of his shenanigans.

He was held to account by democrats in the USA this week far more rigorously than he ever is here at home🤷‍♀️

I think it depends what they find LizzieDrip. They will sell anybody down the river for a good story, particularly when the person is perceived as getting too big for their boots, or not cooperating with the media.

I also think the new Ethics and Integrity Commission will result in changes.

He is doing what many actors, pop stars, celebrities, News readers, authors and others not in the public eye do, including the saintly Lorraine Kelly.

It is legal, but whether or not it is moral is a different matter.

S'cuse me haven't you forgotten St Gary. In 2012 he was forced to pay £4.9 million in back taxes after being found to have used a tax avoidance scheme, but as you say loads of them are at it, some saints some sinners.

I think so, because there is so much investigative journalism going on, they could almost man mark high profile figures. It could be anybody’s turn next.

I don't think Farage will have a conscience about tax avoidance. Some people don't see it as a problem.

Hopefully Rachel Reeves will continue to close them even quicker than she has been doing. It should be the case that if the government (any government) brings in a tax there should be no exemptions. As it is, at the moment there are - and under a right-wing government there would probably be more for the very rich.

I have only seen Farage’s use of his company to receive his salary from GB news, thereby only paying 25% tax not 45% tax, reported in papers like The Guardian and The Independant.

The Daily Mail and The Telegraph do not seem as keen to highlight this as they did Angela Rayner’s problems with stamp duty.
