A lady named Angela from Minnesota might be a distant cousin to King Charles says historian interviewed on Good Morning ITV1 today …there is evidence that Angela could be a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and John Brown….wonder when they’ll do a DNA Test/Analysis …

A poor programme significantly padded out to fill an hour and a half. A lot of unsubstantiated hypotheses and rather bizarre reasoning. Is Rinder that gullible ? The one sane voice was someone who suggested it was possible to have a deep friendship without a sexual element. Some theories were just laughable.

Complete twaddle. Channel 4 must improve.

winterwhite Fri 01-Aug-25 09:53:38

I watched the channel 4 programme last night and didn’t find it convincing beyond what is already known.
Point about language is weak. Those were printed cards, consider the fulsome wording in many birthday cards today. The word pleasure, of which so much is made, Iis often used to rhyme handily with treasure. And used in other ways such as It gives me great pleasure to introduce our speaker.
Nothing new to see here.

I've only traced my British family tree to the late 1600s.
I can proudly announce that I come from a long line of impoverished peasants, several incarcerated felons and at least one "lunatic."
Not a drop of blue blood in my veins so far.

like the Silly Season comment.

But as there are hardly any decent newspapers left and their circulaltions are nose diving daily.

New digital media has to scrape the barrell even deeper for stories.

I personally could not give toss about this story.

Probably utter tripe

Bring back stories like Freddie Starr ate mt hamster fir a good old belly laugh

John Brown became the Queen's servant in 1864 when the Queen, born in 1817 would have been 47.

I doubt any personal or physical relationship would have been instant so she would have been 50 or more when she had this mythical baby.

Remember this was in the late 1860s/70s. Even today when people, even royalty are healthier and the medical knowledge and care around giving birth has improved exponentially, conceiving a baby naturally over the age of 50 is almost unknown.

I think this rumour must fail under the heavy weight of Queen Victoria simply being too old to conceive a child. when John Brown was her servant.Anyway DNA evidence should be able to prove the truth of the claim.

It is sad isn't it that even today, there is still the assumption that if a man and woman are close friends the relationship must be sexual. Why could John Brown and the Queen not have a very close but platonic relationship.

The King, when Prince Charles, had a valet he was very close to, whome he protected even when proven to have been less than honest at times. No one has ever suggested that this intense personal relationship was homosexual, so why should Queen Victoria be subject to this attack from grubby minded individuals/

I joined a history site on FB It amuses me how many people, usually from the US, who jump straight in and claim heritage with the king or queen being discussed. One even claimed he was descended from William the Conqueror.
They never seem to be descended from Dick the grave digger or Ned the miller.

You mean you haven’t heard the rumours about Dick the gravedigger and Queen Mary? Apparently his name was no coincidence.

Ned the miller.

My Step-Great-Grandad was a miller but, of course, I'm not descended from him.
He wasn't called Ned, he had a more unusual name than that.

Well I beat the lot of you!

One of my ancestors was a yeast purveyor!

Don’t think he was royal though.

One of mine was an aleconder - that's somebody who tests the purity of beer.

If you go back 30 generations, you have 66 million ancestors, so you're bound to have a variety of characters.

PS. You won't actually have 66 million ancestors because there weren't 66 million people on the planet 30 generations ago, but you've got a few million at least.

I m not sure about grieving for ever I think Queen Vic had a very soft spot for Mr Brown and for Sheik Karim
Will be interesting to see if the story just fizzles out 🤣

Apparently there's a programme on Channel 4 tonight about the secret marriage and secret child 🙄

Ah, another one claiming their 15-minutes-of-fame.

Rather like the rumours that one of the Romanov Grand Duchesses had survived the Russian Royal Family massacre and for years afterwards various impostors kept popping up and milking the story for all it was worth. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Allira Thu 31-Jul-25 17:33:40

@Allira - Anne Boleyn only had one child - Elizabeth I, who had no children, so how can this lady and you be descendants?

Precisely!!

Well, Anne did have another child, but the boy was stillborn and miscarriages too.

Dreadwitch Thu 31-Jul-25 17:27:31

So Victoria spent several years mourning the husband she adored and who died when she was 42....its a bit of a stretch to say she had another baby at least 5 years after Albert's death when she was 47. I doubt she would have had a baby 10 years after her last one considering she made it clear she hated pregnancy.

In the event it is true then she would be Charles 4th cousin, that's not distant. My relationship with the royal family is distant, as are most Brits.

I expect she will also be related to that woman who claimed for years that she was Anastasia Romanov...🙄

Mojack26 Thu 31-Jul-25 15:52:20

Absolute rubbish...John Brown was my gran's great uncle. Her own name was Margaret Brown Hunter. My dad's aunt had a locket with a lock of Queen Victoria's hair in it.

Yes, I've noticed a lot of Americans on FB history sites who claim they are direct descendants of famous kings, queens etc from history. Like you, I've yet to see anybody proudly claiming descent from less glamourous people!

Grannybags Thu 31-Jul-25 15:22:54

Apparently I'm a descendant of a Jester in the court of Charles 1st.

Does that count?!

sandelf Thu 31-Jul-25 15:03:38

Exactly Not Spaghetti - I have a line back to Eleanor of Aquitaine (not joking). However, as she had a good number of children who married royally and had healthy children etc there must be many thousands who can say the same. Records exist for the 'High Born' so they're easier to trace than Joe Plough. (Lost heart on the Welsh line where generations of John Jones' married Mary Williams - yes but which one...)

Probably to sell the authors book! Whip up interest in a congested field of books about the royals.
