Maremia
Yes, but they're barely out of their teens when they join up. And haven't you seen those exciting ads, to entice them?
Exactly, with many schools hosting recruitment fun for Cadets from a very young age. A fabulous opportunity, especially for poor families, to do fun stuff, fun activities, even camps, climbng, skiing even. Without having any idea of the possible price.
Does not mean I don't agree with defence at all. Children should not be clearly targetted. And all joinng should be fully aware of the possible price to pay.
When my DH was young, he was offered sponsorship, even pay, when doing his medical studies. Immigrant family and very little money. And straight to Officer rank. I am so so gad he turned it down, as tempting as it was at the time. Hs father served in the SA Medical Corps during WW2, what he had to do as a junior surgeon left him changed, very deeply, forever and he died young.
