Thames Water fine

TW have apparently said that the money will be paid by reducing dividends and bonuses and not be passed on to consumers. Bills were increased last month by an eye-wateringly unjustifiable amount so maybe they were stocking up in advance.

I would hope a large fine would limit the amount paid in dividends and bonuses. But of course it won't. The price of water and sewage treatment will go up and we as the customer will be paying more.
As said above, the water industry should never have been privatised.

Which is exactly why a basic utility like water should never have been privatised. Thames Water "customers" can now expect a worse service.

Having water is not an arena for shareholders and profits. It is a public service. What a mess it all is.

The fine money usually goes back to the treasury.
I agree, there seems little point in fining already struggling companies, although it does swell the Treasury coffers...

The fines that are handed out seem high - as you say, it would make better sense to have the money invested properly in the company in a way that benefits customers rather than shareholders and staff bonuses. When an organisation is in trouble - like the NHS - the last thing it needs is financial punishment.
