The payments to pensioners will be in the form of grants.
I imagine there will be plenty of people who will be delighted to receive any amount of grant, possibly including some people on here.

Absolutely Nothing But Very Bad News.
(53 Posts)The BBC News webpage after midnight: war, conflict, explosions, Channel crossing deaths, Donald Trump with his de-ranged ally Elon Musk.
That's it.
Nothing remotely positive, nothing to suggest hope.

GB News readers and viewers have just raised nearly £200,000 for Friends of The Elderly as their way of supporting pensioners who have lost their WFA.
Their presenter Patrick Christys kicked off the campaign and it went mad.
I don’t think any other News channel has done anything like this. I say Well done to all concerned. How are they going to decide how to distribute it?
Why dont you ask them? Don't worry ofcom will be keeping their biased eyes on them .
I found out, thanks. It won't necessarily go to pensioners who have lost their WFA.
It’s now over £240,000 and will go to pensioners who really need a bit extra. I thought it was a decent gesture anyway and presumably listeners and viewers did too as the donations flew up within hours of launching it.

Friends of the Elderly! Hilarious. Friends of the Tories more like.
What a load of nonsense.
Don’t be so nasty!

Yesterday was the anniversary of the terrible murders carried out by Palestinians who happened to be also hamas, when they crept into Israel under cover of darkness and enjoyed, yes enjoyed! Their cruel killing spree of over a thousand people including whole families, babies and children and teenagers. Then they took prisoners of over two hundred back into Gaza, to kill, rape and hold hostage.
Palestinians in Gaza gathered round a truck carrying a dead Israeli young woman to spit and hit at her body.
Consider that brummie and lamusica !Consider this, why is no news coming out of Palestine ever?
Gaza or the West Bank? There is news of whatever happens in the West Bank.
Little from Gaza as it’s a war zone and hamas pretty much depleted there so not giving their version of anything, which is good.

I listen to radio 4 news, occasionally to Nicky Campbell’s morning phone in. For detailed news ch4 at 7pm.
Like many others, I often switch off because it’s just awful. I’m concerned that age old anti semitism is growing.
It’s never gone away but it’s raised its ugly head higher since last October 7th.
BBC I player news coverage under the headlines Israel Gaza war has news in depth and fact checking everyday, its balanced.

for example today.
nanna I'm wary of reading too much into these dreadful individual attacks until we find out if its a "planned plot" or one of these that turns out to be an extremely disturbed individual who has been influenced by extreme social media posts.
I watch Channel 4 News regularly and I'm sorry to say I think it is somewhat biased against Israel in its reporting and gives disproportionate air time to pro-Gaza and pro-Hezbolah views.
Here a physics prof at Melbourne uni was attacked by a masked coward- because he is Jewish. Anti Semitism is rearing its head across the world . The marches and chants are not helping. We have never, ever had this sort of thing here before.

To add. Also watch Sky News and that is pretty comprehensive.
We watch BBC, ITV and Channel 4. Channel 4 is the most informative. I no longer care for the BBC but dh always watches it and then has a moan. I find it pays to watch all three. Can’t watch GB as any channel that has Farage presenting is a complete no no for us.

The BBC raises around 92 million pounds a year for charities. Of course a large chunk is children in need, but on the radio there are regular charity appeals too included in this figure, has been for ages.
However depressing news is, it’s important to know what’s happening in the world.
Reading the news or watching it multiple times a day isn’t desirable or necessary tho.
I’m referring to October 7th last year btw and the BBC does not give biased reporting to all things Israeli, rather the opposite IMV Sky does more even handed reporting.

BBC news - like the other main media outlets gives pro Israeli coverage. The current main stories are about the Israeli hostages families and pictures of the Israeli hostages. No mention of the thousands of Palestinians held hostage for years or the ones thrown out of their homes and forced to live in refugee camps for over 76 years. Headlines refer to Biden working towards peace when he has just agreed to billions more weapons. The main UK papers similarly have stories in the weekend magazines focusing on the plight of Israelis. There is no mention of the pro Palestinian marches and the huge numbers of different Jewish and other faith organisations who participate.
Brummie. It’s heartbreaking isn’t it? Innocent men women and children by the thousands, losing loved ones, homes, livelihoods and hope.while men play with their boys’ toys. Tit for tat. Powerful men who have lost control and humanity. Protecting their egos. Unconcerned about the collateral damage, the trauma, the flattened cities, the desolation and despair of ordinary people who have no real voice. A free Palestinian State is needed. You can’t kill idealism with bombs.
There have always been wars happening somewhere. News channels thrive on bad news - happy stories are usually an afterthought at the end of the programme.

I should think it will be up to Friends of The Elderly to decide how they will distribute it not GB News.
Obviously it is not going to cover all pensioners fuel bills but it is a very worthwhile gesture and if it helps out just some of the poorest pensioners then that’s a good thing.

It is all a bit depressing though, somewhat scary (Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, our economy, life in general)
Some days I just utterly refuse to read or watch the news!
Then again I’m a curious (nosy) person who like to know what’s going on in the world.
What to do! 🙄This is me. The news is depressing but I like to know what’s going on. I watch/listen to BBC news rather than read it.
I’ve just heard the results of a YouGov poll, which has apparently found that 9% of 18-24 year olds in Britain favour and have sympathy for Hamas. I think they’re a murdering band of ………. so clearly I’m out of touch.
I’ve decided to listen to the news and then do what my husband does; put it out of mind because there’s nothing I can do about any of it.
I’ve just checked the YouGov site and cant find any reference to that poll, I’m not surprised at the result if it’s true. I was wondering what other age groups thought.
