Can anyone link the Daily Mail article on this councillor? Apologies I’m hopeless at links. The article is ‘interesting’ and I suspect won’t endear this man to most if us

A Green Party candidate shouted “Allahu Akbar!......
(125 Posts)www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/04/green-party-mothin-ali-allahu-akba-leeds-gipton-harehills/Mr Ali was one of dozens of candidates around the country who ran on a Gaza ticket and, in doing so, defeated their Labour rival.

I agree with you, Cossy. I did know already about his Gaza stance, was there any more shocking disclosure than that in the DT article?
I don't think it was an appropriate platform to run on, either (but then, I suspect that was how George Galloway gained his Oldham victory, too...).
But, for all we know, this guy might turn out to be an excellent councillor.Wouldn't hold your breath. Obviously muslim concerns come first.
You really should get out more!
Firstly, not all Muslims are obsessed with Gaza to the exclusion of everything else. That's like claiming that all the people who campaigned against the US in Viet Nam couldn't think of anything else.
Secondly, not everybody is concerned about what is happening in Gaza is Muslim.
Indeed, Growstuff.
Some Muslims are obsessed with Gaza to the exclusion of everything else.
It is NOT the same as saying Thank God. A large group of men wearing Islamic dress unfurled a Palestinian flag and the newly elected councillor made a pro Hamas speech. This was a local election. Supposedly nothing to do with national let alone international politics. Don’t you think the people of Leeds have a right to feel a little disturbed if this is the sort of person who is supposed to be running their local services.

Presumably this means Kate Forbes religion isn't an issue. I assume the same rules apply.
Is Kate Forbes campaigning to be a local Councillor?
Campaigns for seats on the local Council should concentrate on local issues.
Schools, housing, social care, local transport, roads, recycling etc.

I'm surprised that more people in the public eye haven't expressed concern about how trouble in the Middle East has influenced the recent election results.
If only more people understood the difference in the way Muslims think. In their eyes, if you are pro-Israel, you are anti-Muslim. They don't understand that you can sympathise with the Palestinians but still support Israel.
This is something which must be addressed because it is going to cause more and more division, and give terrorists excuse to attack Christian sites.
It's a pity Tony Blair didn't have the intellect to anticipate this happening before he opened the doors to all and sundry.
Exactly. I am surprised at the naivety of some people on this forum. We have had our eyes closed for almost fifty years. Now we have to face the consequences of our apathy. I only hope is it’s not too late.

I’ll let you know shall I what sort of councillor he turns out to be. One thing is sure, he won’t be anything like what is expected of Green candidate. The Green Party has either been duped or it complicit in a Trojan horse operation.
If we had an effective opposition, which took a stand against our involvement in the war, by opposing the supply of arms to Israel, and our involvement in training Israeli military personnel, then, perhaps there would be no need for anyone to stand on the issue of Gaza.
It isn't only Muslims who care about what is happening there. And it isn't only this country that has groups actively opposing the war.
Well, perhaps he should have bided his time and stood for what he believes in at the General Election.
Local Council elections are about schools, roads, bins, housing, social care and other local issues.

The Green Party opposes the supply of arms to Israel and wants to see prosecutions for war crimes. So he is entirely supported by the party

Even General Elections should be fought on domestic issues. Obviously foreign policy comes into it, but an MP should be a rounded individual who will apply him/herself to the issues at hand, and those issues are mainly domestic ie NHS, Education, Taxes, etc.
It would appear that this new councillor is disinterested in the local issues and only cares about Palestine and Gaza.

Yes, people who are only concerned with and campaign on one issue have no place in local or national politics.
It wasn't an appropriate space to use in that way. There are others.
I am waiting for more full reports tho as so far we've just had the "shock horror" reaction you tend to get in some reports and I want a full picture, including what other Green Party people think and what other people who are Muslim feel about it.
Glorianny Thanks for letting me know that the Green Party has been complicit in letting a Trojan horse into local town councils. My initial thought was that they had been foolish but I was obviously being too generous.
I posted about this on another thread. His actual words on winning:
Mothin Ali, 42, declared his election to Leeds Council a 'win for the people of Gaza' in a rowdy victory speech where he shouted: 'We will not be silenced. We will raise the voice of Gaza. We will raise the voice of Palestine. Allahu Akbar!'
I never thought to hear such words in our country, least of all from a local councillor. What has any of this to do with a local election or the environment? They are using our democratic system to gain control for their own purposes. We are heading down a slippery slope.
It is a secret ballot, but it would be interesting to know the make-up of the people who voted this man in. His allegiance has been very clearly declared to a foreign power, and the local concerns of his constituents obviously come a poor second.

So you would rather we allow Hamas to destroy Israel, as is their aim. That is your stance obviously. Disgusting.

Hardly likely to shout Rule Britannia in the circumstances.
No they are so bloody ungrateful for the shelter this country has given them.
