By-election and local authority results.
(213 Posts)It appears that the polls which are showing massive results for labour are so far correct.
The by-election in Liverpool was won by Labour with a 26% swing. That is huge!
The local elections are showing the same sort of swing away from the Tories.

We had a Mayor and a PCC to vote for, no councillors, Casdon. When Mr M and I went to vote at about 9 am the polling clerk said that they'd been quite busy.
I do agree with you, though. I don't think the PCC role has really grabbed anyone's interest so running it as a sole election seems a bit wasteful. We had zero communication from PCC candidates and only knew there was a vote when our cards arrived. No wonder there was apathy.
PCC candidates aren’t allowed to put out promotional literature encouraging people to vote for them Pittcity, you had to go onto the council website to read statements their agents had written on their behalf. It makes little sense to me, because that makes it even less likely that people will turn out to vote at all.

Mm, that’s interesting Casdon because I received a promotional leaflet from the Conservative PCC candidate in my area, but not from any others. In fact, in his case, it backfired because it made me look online for the other candidates’ statements … and I voted for one of them.

The low turnout always angers me. 30% here and no change because the same people voted the same as last time.
The excuses for not voting included, "nothing ever changes" and "they're all as bad as each other"!!!
Yes I had the same conversation with my lovely dinosaur relatives, nothing ever changes they said. Well it won't if you don't vote says I. The wife wears the trousers, and said we're not going to bother. I wasn't going to, to be fair. Then my head got the better of me.

The question in my mind is, will these results make it so clear to Sunak that the electorate just doesn't want the tories that he will call a GE for the summer, or will he just keep the government limping on until the very last minute to cause maximum devastation for the next government to clear up?
I think Sunak want the flights to Rwanda to be up and running before he calls a GE.
Rwanda flights up and running will make absolutely no difference at all to the ultimate result of the GE.
Just more money wasted and more deeply ingrained disgust for the tories from those who oppose the Rwanda scheme.
But not from those who support it MaizieD. I think Sunak’s pinning his hopes on ‘action’.
I love the old joke “an elderly couple …. Husband who voted Conservative and his wife Labour. They decided they wouldn’t bother voting this time round as their votes only cancelled each other’s out anyway. At 10pm on polling day the wife looked across at her husband and said “I voted … “
When over 700 people arrived on boats one day this week, I doubt Rwanda will make a dent in the numbers.
BTW OP, the by election was Blackpool, not Liverpool.

I saw the information on my local Facebook page, I’ve just checked, and actually it’s not strictly true that candidates can’t send out leaflets etc. but the only official place to see the information about all candidates is on the Council’s websites as I understand it, there is no government funding for them to send out information. I assume the Tory candidate in your area must have had party sponsorship to send leaflets out in that case.

urms live dangerously and give Labour a go😄😄
It can’t get a lot worse!
Agree

Thanks Casdon. Yes I think he probably did - all the more reason not to vote for him! TBH I find it a bit weird that the PCC should be affiliated to any party - surely they should be independent of party politics

It's a sad state of affairs when people advocate 'living dangerously' in voting Labour.
Labour does have clear policies and the drive to begin what may be a long process of change.
There will be mistakes of course, and misjudgements but Labour has always had bad press from the right-wing media, who are quite frankly, preparing to demolish every policy that new Labout government will implement.
Reading posts on here disappoints me in how much people are manipulated by the media and for mostly intelligent people, don't seem able to think for themselves.
The swing from the Tories to Reform is mirroring the influence UKIP had on Cameron's government and led to the disastrous Brexit vote.
The Tories will see this as a sign to move even more to the right, hence Sunak's panicing over the Rwanda issue.
To say they have so much power and influence over the media, they seem to be very poor at actually reading what the electorate really want.

I agree, party politics aren’t relevant in these roles. The whole appointment process seems wrong to me.
Low turn out again everywhere. It makes me wonder what the much younger generations will do?
They certainly won't go out to vote so will it be on an App??

But there is always a low turnout for council elections and by elections.
I'd've thought people knew this by now.. I don't think it has anything to do with the age of the voters.
Last year the Tories had the worst local election results forever.
This year they are worse.
So the important thing is the trend not the level of the turnout.
That is why you will see Tories absolutely panicking today.
It’s a bit early to tell but Labour is only picking up half of the Conservative votes at the moment.
How would this translate at the GE?
Look at the electoral map that will give you a pretty up to date idea as to what will happen at an election.
Such a poor turnout ?

No different from the usual turnout on local elections.

Logically it will do Labour brilliantly because the Tory vote is split.
MaizieD... I do know that, as I was helping out with a campaign yesterday.
I'm talking about the future 10 - 20 years time.
There will need to be significant changes across the board to entice the young teenagers of today to Vote.
Will Rishi be out by Monday?
Be careful what you vote for or do not vote. Is there a Commonsense party, that would be good and make a nice change. Have a lovely day everybody.
