Despite your justification Monica I believe nothing that comes out of Gaza, apart from the pictures I have seen on the television. Anything else, I take with a pinch of salt because it cannot be verified and is quite probably propaganda. People reporting back could be reporting anything and it is impossible to verify.

Does Israel want full scale war in the Middle East?
(627 Posts)I heaved a sigh of relief that most of Iran's drones and missiles had been brought down without reaching Israel and it seems little damage has been done, but it seems that is not the end of it. So, what do you think is going on? Does Israel need to have a full scale war with Iran and what do you think it would achieve or is this really about keeping Netanyahu's right wing govt on side?
Very few now Oreo!
I have said many times I have been against the gradual occupation of the Gaza Strip and think it should be under Palestinian control. Initially Hamas had a civil wing but that has been overtaken by a militancy and methods that have been counter productive for ordinary Palestinians.
Gaza was under Palestinian control and look what happened. I have no idea what the long term objectives of Israel, are, but I doubt that it will include total autonomy.

Which TV news do you watch, Maddyone? Who is taking the pictures that you believe? Who is choosing what you see and how it's interpreted? Only asking as I don't watch much TV so would like to see what you're seeing as you seem to think its unbiased.
Turn it off. I have turned everything off that alters what I type.
A lot of the news originates from Al Jazerra which is definitely biased which the other news channels use because it’s dramatic and controversial. One thing for certain nothing come out of Gaza unless Hamas approve it.
Hamas chooses what we see from Gaza

What about the video etc that is released by the IDF/Israeli government? The pictures that are reproduced in the Israeli media? The pictures etc that are taken by British and other international doctors, aid workers etc that have been in Gaza? Are you suggesting that they are either members, supporters of Hamas or that their phones are checked by Hamas prior to them leaving?
vibtagewine I watch a variety of news programmes. All the main ones, BBC every day, ITV sometimes, Al Jazeera sometimes, GBNews (go ahead and sneer) and sometimes Sky. When in Paris last week we watched BBC World News, and when in New Zealand for several weeks in Jan/Feb we only watched Al Jazeera as it was the only news channel available in our rental. All will give a taste of what is happening, and most will post pictures. I realise that most of the footage comes from what is approved by Gaza, but I can see it. I can interpret what I see, I don’t need any journalist to tell me that a building is bombed or a child hurt. Some footage comes from the IDF, but far less. That is usually a battle scene.
I don’t believe any of the propaganda put out through journalists, doctors, or anyone else in Gaza, because it cannot be verified. No one is allowed into Gaza and therefore all information is subject to censorship by Hamas.
foxie it is naive in the extreme to believe that Hamas don’t ensure that only the information they approve of leaves Gaza. It’s like the marches in London, we are constantly told that the protesters only support Gaza, not Hamas, and are not antisemitic in nature. My eyes, when watching footage, tell me otherwise.
Agree Maddy
I agree with Monica. Social media allows individuals to send pictures and reports.
I think both Hamas and The Israeli regime attempt to "control the narrative"
Also organisations like MSF

Are you saying "I'm naive in the extreme" or are you just disagreeing with me? I try to be open minded and as unbiased as I can but of course, that's not "naivety". Do I believe that information gets out of Gaza without being sanctioned by Hamas? Yes, I do, it's impossible these days to prevent it. I also believe that the governments of countries are kept well informed and if the US is unhappy with what is going on in Gaza then there's good reason.
With regard to the marches in London, I believe most people are not anti semitic (and any that are and break the law should be arrested!) but they are most certainly against this war in Gaza and provided they have permission to march, then it is their right.
You can go mad never believing anything. Journalists working in the Middle East have networks of contacts, who they have known long term and know what causes they support.
The BBC has a highly experienced verification team. For example, after the Iranian attack on Israel. It examined footage coming from sources on both sides to find images from other events included on both sides.
Of course you cannot put ones hand on ones haeart and say every report is absolutelstraight, but that applies to anything in life, but as with everything, you cponsider the information coming to you and make a decision on the balance pf probabilities and I have conidence in the sources used by seasoned journalists, experts in the area who know their contacts very well and over many years.
Anti semites are not arrested, a Jew wearing a kippah can be

You never can be sure what is verifiable reporting but you have to be sceptical when it’s always children that are killed and hospitals bombed.
The Israelis are not interested in children or hospitals but if Hamas make a stand and fight when civilians are close they will get injured. Hamas just don’t care how many civilians are hurt they are deliberately hiding behind them, how anyone can support Hamas is just beyond me.

Can you please elaborate on who has been arrested for wearing a kippah. If this is in reference to Gideon Falter, he was not arrested.
I didn’t say ‘was arrested’ I said ‘can be ‘

I think this is where international parties come in!
Thanks MOnica and foxie for your views on the validity/otherwise of the news presented by various outlets, including the bbc. I’d add channel 4 news as something I watch most evenings. They’re reporters have been in Israel. Krishnan Guru-Murthy is excellent. He challenges everyone involved with no favour.

I'd guess not. Only an opinion.
Israel has such a strong air fighting force, plus the French, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan don't seem to want a war.

Under which law can someone be arrested for wearing a kippah?
