It would help if the radio and TV news presented more GOOD news. Ok, at the end of each bulletin there is normally a little bit but, for goodness sake, the world is full of good things as well as bad. Same with newspapers and internet articles - always dramatic headlines meant to scare us stiff.

Trump and dementia - I'm lying awake at night worrying
(113 Posts)Is anyone else feeling that the end of the world is coming? This has been a dreadful week.
I am literally lying awake at night these days worrying about the world. Near the top of my list, maybe right at the top, is the dreadful possibility that a man with advancing dementia is going to be President of the USA.
www.salon.com/2024/02/23/dr-john-gartner-on-a-tale-of-two-brains-bidens-brain-is-aging-brain-is-dementing/
This is only one of a plethora of articles raising questions about Trump's mental state. The distinction between him and Biden is important and one which any of us who have known dementia cases would be aware of. The experts say that Biden shows signs of a normal ageing brain for an alert man of his age - forgetting the odd name. But Trump goes into flights of fancy - thinking his father was born in Germany when it was his grandfather who was born in Germany is a big red flag. And what about his pronouncement that whatever he does, if he is President, is legal?
My husband points out that actually the US constitution does allow for a President with dubious mental capacity to be removed from office. But what damage could he do before they plucked up the courage to do that?
I feel as though I am watching a slow-motion global car crash where madmen, real actual madmen, are taking charge. Putin invades Ukraine and threatens Nato. Trump and his shameful band of Republicans refuse aid to Ukraine. Europe gets drawn in to the war. Or Putin just takes over after even more bloodshed. And then decides to invade a few more Eastern European countries. Conscription all over Europe. Endless, Orwellian war. And eventually, in about 2038, my darling, sweet four year old grandson in Poland will die in a muddy, freezing foxhole on the Polish-Belarus border.
Everyone is distracted by Gaza. I am no fan of Netanyahu - he should bloody well go - but Israel, for all its faults, is a genuine democracy in a region dominated by theocracies and autocracies. I do wonder why the Arab states do not do more to help the Gaza civilians; and why George Galloway's hero Putin is egging them on.
The murder of Navalny has sent me into a downward spiral. Help, somebody give me something to feel positive about.
Sorry but I'm sitting here waiting for a plumber to sort out the bad smell in my rental property which is making my tenant, justifiably, very angry and I feel helpless and useless.
PS. I totally agree with you about Trump. He's a nightmare.
I'm hoping and hoping that they will find a way to stop him becoming the Republican candidate.
But, hey ho, what will be will be. Making ourselves ill with worry will not alter anything.
I'm so sorry, Sarahcyn. I think most of us are worried about the state of the world at the moment. But there is no point in letting it overwhelm us. There is little that we can do about it
I think just concentrating on our own lives and taking pleasure in small things is best. The world has been in a state before and yet has survived; hopefully this will happen again.
Listen to the news less, maybe. There are a millions acts of kindness every day, try to concentrate on those.
I read somewhere once, - Worry is like riding a rocking horse, where does it get you?
But I know it's not easy to switch off. I hope you find some contentment somehow. Best wishes.
Try and find some things to take your mind off all the world’s problems and issues, much of which we can do nothing about. Easier said than done when you’re a natural worrier!
Try and relax before bed, milky drink, nice book, so you give yourself the best chance to sleep
I live for each day ... rejoice in my DDs ... watch my lovely GC developing into loving kind young adults ... and feel that the future will be better or having these wonderful people in the world.
There always been warped megalomaniac... there always will be. But dwelling in this does not increase the sum of human happiness.
Outside my window the sky is blue, the sun is shining and there is snow in the hills. That is enough for me .... it has to be.
I listen to the news sparingly ... mostly just the headlines ...
I hope some sunshine enters your life soon.
Sarah you need to see a doctor re your mental state as soon as you can get an appointment as however bad the state of the world is this is not how life is
You cannot change the world you have no control over anything but your own little life and those around you
You are totally wasting your life on something you can do nothing about
Switch your tv/radio to a music or a light programme Stop watching any news programmes at all Don’t discuss it and do anything else that can interest you
Stop stop stop you are ill
Trump made a mockery of a disabled reporter and i have never respected him since then.
Im feeling quite low about the state of things in the world too. All I can do is vote for honesty and get involved where I can do some good and take care of my family as best I can.
350,000,000 people in USA, how can it be that the choice comes down to Biden or Trump ?

oh cheer up, we might be hit by a meteorite next week then none of this will happen!
Thank god for that. I thought we were in trouble for a minute.
It took me a bit to get used to that boheminan when my first grandchild was born in NZ I was told about her birth the day before, if you see what I mean, my son rang and said you have a granddaughter born in the 7th of xxx and daft me said but it’s only the 6th 🙃
Once upon a time I found a piece of folded paper on a park bench, on it was written 'I don't worry about the world coming to an end anymore because in another country it's already tomorrow, isn't that a comforting thought'. It may be very simplistic, but I still hold to that fact.
I'm sorry you feel so overwhelmed sarahcyn there are so many bad things happening in the world I agree. You do seem to be overly anxious though maybe you need to talk through your anxieties with a professional or speak to your doctor.
Try not to worry 24/7 set aside a time for trying to sort your anxieties, those you can do something about and others which we can only pray will be resolved positively. There are good things happening all around us if we take time to find them, sadly they are not newsworthy. I know we all try to do our bit either with money or time so all those small gestures add up to a lot of help. Take care of yourself.

^I can sympathise with you; we have lost family members and many friends recently.^
Sorry to hear that Callistemon21
Thanks *fancythat
and there I am saying we hope someone else might be dead soon! So many good people have gone and Putin is still here on earth.

The outlook is dire whatever: Trump or Biden? What a choice!
Gaza/Israel, there’s nothing we can do.
Maybe seek some counselling to help you cope, you’re obviously struggling.
Biden has been a very capable president with an excellent team behind him . He is much more physically fit than Trump . He is a seasoned politician . Trump is a failed businessman who is fighting many plausible criminal convictions . Trump supporters are loud and obvious where Biden supporters are low key . I don’t consider Trump a real threat .
I can sympathise with you; we have lost family members and many friends recently.

Donald Trump is a good man, he knows what's right and what's wrong, hope he is elected potus, things will get done, he is not afraid of anything or anyone, defender of the free world
Endless, Orwellian war. And eventually, in about 2038, my darling, sweet four year old grandson in Poland will die in a muddy, freezing foxhole on the Polish-Belarus border.
If you are so upset that that is worrying you, sarahcyn, I think perhaps you do need some professional help.
What is happening now in Ukraine is dreadful but I think we all hope that the present person in charge of the murderous regime will be dead by 2038, if not a lot sooner.
Many of us worry about things which may never happen but then have to temper it with a little realism.
I am a positive person and my thoughts are, why worry if there is nothing you can do about it. The world and it's governments are out of our control, just live each day to the best of your ability. If you can do something about it then for goodness sake, do it otherwise enjoy your lives while you can.
When my husband became ill I was his 24/7 carer, the specialists told us that he had three years to live, we decided to carry on enjoying our lives together, sitting in the garden etc. having little treats and making the best of a terrible situation. My husband lived for 5 years longer than the specialist said so we had eight years together every single day until he died 10 years ago.
Being pessimistic and worrying all the time does not change a thing, just get on with your lives and see what tomorrow brings.
I think Trump is such a habitual liar that he doesn’t know up from down or fact from fantasy. I’m not a religious person, but the idea of end times seems very real given the state of things here in the US and all over the world. Removing Trump from office would prove nearly impossible given the support the Republicans who seem to have learned to rely on fastasy rather than facts.

But cheer up, springs on its way 😂
We had snow here today!
The poor daffodils are drooping.
But cheer up, springs on its way 😂
You wonder why the Arab states don’t support the Palestinians
Many years ago when the PLO held sway in Gaza it was more or less a secular state.
Then they sold themselves to the Muslim Brotherhood. No Arab state will touch them.

Nothing like gransnet for delivering a short sharp "pull yourself together" style slap round the chops
I'm with you, sarahcyn. I worry about the future, too, though it usually doesn't turn out to be quite as bad as feared.
I get very peed off about perfectly understandable and natural feelings being assigned to the 'mental health' banner and I'm always amazed at the lack of empathy that can be shown.
That's why I would never share a worry on Gnet and I don't do it much in real life, either. Being told to pull yourself together is most unhelpful and being told you have mental health problems is even worse...
fancythat I can sympathise with you; we have lost family members and many friends recently.
Worries are always worse in the middle of the night, yest, but there is nothing we can do about most of them.
The latest asteroid did hit Earth, greenlady but mostly burnt up in the Earth's atmosphere! Fragments of it hit Berlin. I always think I'd love to find a meteorite in the garden, as long as it didn't land on our heads. Or the house.
